- In her first speech on the state of the European UNion The EU's most powerful senior official Ursula von der Leyen unveiled plans to reboot the bloc's battered economy with what is being dubbed a "green new deal."
Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said the EU should significantly toughen its emissions-cutting target to at least 55% by 2030. She suggested that 30% of the bloc's €750 billion coronavirus recovery package should be raised through green bonds, which are financial instruments aimed at supporting climate-friendly projects. The EU agreed the stimulus plan in July that will allow the European Commission to raise billions of euros on the global financial markets. MEPs and EU governments would still need to agree to the plan.
Speaking at the European Parliament in Brussels, the former German defense minister said that the coronavirus crisis presented the bloc with "a moment for the EU to lead the way." She urged EU governments to work on common health care policies, promising a biomedical research agency and a global summit. Von der Leyen said the coronavirus pandemic had underlined the need for closer cooperation.
Von der Leyen made only a passing reference to Brexit because talks are being led by the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier. She warned Downing Street that it would fail to seal a trade deal with the EU if it tried to rewrite last year’s withdrawal agreement.

Most of those who commented negatively did not even hear the speech itself. You are not Chinese, Russian or US bots, you are automated human beings who do not see the value of discussion and disagreement. You do not value other people opinions, you value yours only.
If you care about the world, at least hear the beginning of the speech before you comment. Make yourself and your comment legible, don't be a cackling chicken.

It's weird how they almost never addressed why countries want to leave the EU. Spain want to leave the EU becuase their trading services are polluted with hyperinflation. France want to leave to stop paying taxes to the EU. Denmark want a trade deal with the UK (which was why they signed up) the Netherlands are having their election soon and So is Sweden. Italy is now the country head first into leaving the EU and many politicians in Europe are watching both Italy and the UK and how they discuss their departing bill.

Yes, just forget that the EU didnt even exist 20 years ago, it was a trading block that morphed into some sort of regulations department for Europe. Chinese Influence is roaming rampant and the Union is the one helping them. Over 60% of manufacturing jobs in Portugal, Italy and Greece are Chinese.
Europe has never ever been united under one idea, Even to this day the spanish and the french still see eachother as equal competitors, the UK and Germany still dont like eachother becuase of their ideological differences. Were being pushed around STILL, only its being done by the Union.
You need to look at why these countries want to leave. Their way of life is being destroyed by the EU's actions.
Now imagine the other side of Atlantic state of the union address. "Everybody hates me, they do not understand what a great genius I am."

We don’t want federalism, I’m from the Netherlands and the sentiment here is that federalism is not the way forward. I now understand why the British voted to leave, we , the people of the Netherlands, have voted against a European constitution in a referendum in 2005. The Lisbon treaty was almost a copy of the constitution, they ignored the Dutch, the French, the Irish , who all voted no. It’s not transparant, we want a union of soeverein states or a Nexit 🇱🇺🇱🇺🇱🇺

I have known 5 year olds in Holland that speak 5 languages. It is impressive but if children grow up with more than one language they find it much easier.

If you're interested in Europe's plans for a post-coronavirus world I've done an analysis that looks into the future prospects of the EU after the pandemic on my channel.
Indeed, more jobs, secure jobs, better jobs, green jobs... if the EU keeps focusing on that they will go far. A breath of fresh air in the current world environment.
And that's the problem here as the history shows us speeches most of the time if not always they stay just that "speeches"...

GC 411 - You don’t get the point. Only by working in Denmark or a similar society you were able to save enough money to drink cocktails on the beach for the rest of your life. The vast majority on earth pays lower taxes but couldn’t even afford to do holidays for a week. And they are not able to apply for jobs since their tax rates are low but can’t fund free higher learning institutions. Being born in Denmark is winning the lottery and now you yield the dividends of making it pay off.
I wonder how they will prevent minimum wage translating into further export of jobs to countries who use low low pay and conditions for its workers and little regard toward environmental standards as a competitive advantage. The elephant in the room being China. Will they work to end the ridiculous status of China as a developing country and end all the subsidies that go with that? How will europe. ensure that prices of Chinese products and services are in keeping with the idea of fair competition, where European companies are not disadvantaged by high wage, social and environmental costs?
Some of the EU members actually could enjoy the underdeveloped advantage,but under the unified currency policies , the strength of them will not be fully exploited, and then become the market of German products, losing ability to develop its own manufacturing capabilities and entering vicious circle in economy aspect.
Well helping inovation can help because of patents companies can make a product that (atleas if china obeys by the rules) cant be cpied for a lot of time by cheap manufacturesrs.

An inspiring, forward looking speech. It will be hard to implement the projects, but it's a worthy effort to try the very best. Europe will not thrive on Green Economy and Communication Technology alone though these are sectors severely below their potential. It is refreshing to hear constructive ideas in our time of despair. Fingers crossed for a more than imperfect EU to improve step by step and year by year. Kaizen and Kapla!

There are people who take the EU as a positive force. As i wrote, quite imperfect, but positive. I count myself as one of them. This has nothing to do with paid jubilations but more with the complexity of issues a d challenges the world and especially European states have to tackle that are regional and global and hence not solvable by singular action. Well she did say, for some 55% won't be enough, and for some it will be to much. From this I think that is a goal every one will try to achieve, but not all will achieve this.

You know something about von der Leyen and her political past in Germany? She was Minister of Family and Minister of Defense. There was the consultant affair and the matter with von der Leyen's son who was employed at McKinsay, one of the consultant companys, where a huge amount of tax money went. There was started a committee of inquiry but she was spared. evidence like her cell phone were simply disappeared. it's that easy when your name is von der leyen. But the Germans know what she has done und what she wants to do in the EU.
A job at the EU is rewarding because, it also implies to assist developing and less developed countries but, competition has to be fair.

The EU will break up , Brexit is just the beginning . The bloc when it was formed was an inspiration but now it has strayed off course to the point where consensus on pretty much any issue is a struggle to achieve , the elections held in May 2019 produced the most fractured parliament in its history .
The " one size fits all " approach isn't working and if the likes of Ms van der Leyen and those in Brussels don't understand that then they are deluding themselves . The EU has two options , they are both simple and easy to understand , reform or perish ! My feeling is it will be the latter because they will refuse to recognize what is in front of them . This organisation could have become one of the greatest on the planet , however , because of the intransigence shown by those in charge who do not appear to be accountable to anyone they will in effect oversee its demise .
@@AlbieC It is only when the the UK has completely left the EU that the situation will become clear . The UK will of course have problems , mostly stemming from COVID19 but this will be much more pronounced in the EU
@Nspnspker The misconception here is that everyone is looking at the UK when in reality they should be looking closely at the EU ! When this finally happens people are going to get a rude awakening .

Let me be clear about one thing , I mean no disrespect to any of the European nations , people make this mistake quite often . It's interesting you mention the COVID response , it was appalling . the 750 billion euro fund which is being set up means funds may not be available until this time next year , Ms van der Leyen was forced to make a grovelling apology to Italy regarding this fiasco .
To reiterate , I do not hate Europeans , I would like to see trade increase among the individual countries and have good relations with them all ! but in my opinion we shouldnt be satisfied with bad leaders because its worse elsewhere. we can do better than that. no one voted for her, the people voted for their parties or weber, timmermans & vestager. the commission and the parliament promised that they will take the winner as president, no matter what. that is not democratic and von der leyen isnt a democratic leader.
and it is probably a coincidence that she was sent to Brussels and thus obtained immunity exactly when she had several committees of inquiry on her neck in germany. ("berater-affäre" and "handy-affäre")
