I won’t act like X and Y is the best of the Pokémon series, but I do wish more people recognize that this game was a huge step away from the pixel style. I’m sure most of this game was experimental even for the Pokémon Company. There’s a lot of little things you can do that you couldn’t do in other games like rollerskating, customizing your character, customizable Pokémon (Furfrou mostly), full friend group (instead of 1-2 rivals), mega evolution, and probably more things I can’t remember at this moment. I think the saddest thing about this game is that Pokémon Z was scrapped cause it probably would have made the game feel complete.

The name of the mega evolution guru is Gurkinn! Though the name wasn't really mentioned in the games besides by like one NPC. Olympia should've been the eighth gym. Even the anime treated her as a far more important character than Wulfric. And yes, the design of the Gyms in this game is insane, they absolutely took full advantage of the 3D effect. I mean, the surprise of walking to the middle of what looks like a normal building in the Anistar Gym and seeing it all disappear as it turns into a sphere surrounded by a night sky with different galaxies and constellations was mind-blowing. Not to mention the stunning Coumarine Gym and the fact the first ever Fairy gym at Laverre City is a GIANT DOLLHOUSE...well played.
The buildings actually have life in them. The architecture, the soundtrack, the different Vivillon patterns, Mega evolutions, the XY games definitely deserve more love! I instantly fell in love with the entire Fennekin line, and while most of the rivals weren't interesting, I really enjoyed Shauna. The little story beat at the castle or whatever was really enjoyable to me for whatever reason. And Kalos' Pokémon League is by far the most beautiful League in the Pokémon world. Not to mention because the Z season of the XY anime was incredible. The XY anime introduced many to the franchise!

If you were a sophomore in high school when Gen 6 came out then I’m about 3 years younger than you. X and Y came out when I was starting 7th grade and I loved them. They were probably my favorite games when they released. I loved strolling around on the roller skates, exploring all the buildings in the towns and cities (especially in Lumiose), finding new Pokémon, and using the new Mega Evolutions (which is still the best generational mechanic). Now, 10 years later, they’re not my favorite games anymore-not even my favorite Pokemon games. I can see their problems and shortcomings. But when I go back to them, nostalgia takes over and I still feel the wonder I had when I first played them.
3 years after X and Y released, Sun and Moon came out. By then, I would have been as old as you were when Gen 6 was new, and I was disenchanted by them. I didn’t care for a lot of the new characters, new locations, or new mechanics. I didn’t really care for Team Skull at first and I thought the lack of gym battles and traditional badges was off-putting. I finished the games once and put them away, immediately going back to my favorites from Gens 3 through 6.
I can’t say for certain whether it’s that age where Pokémon feels stale, but it is interesting that 10th grade is where I also had a falling out with the series, after being a fan for years. I did enjoy Legends Arceus and Scarlet / Violet, so I’m still a fan of the series, but there was definitely a lull in my enjoyment from 2016 to 2021

Pokemon-wise, X is actually one my favorites. There were some incredible new Pokemon available in the Kalos region. A part of it was probably the addition of the fairy type, which quickly became my favorite. The starters are all great too, which is a nice change from Unova (I know a lot of people are only fans of Froakie, but I actually love them all.
The game is definitely too easy, but it's still a fun experience, and the graphics are pretty good and despite having too many "friends" in this game, I think they did a good job of not spending too much time on explanations and cut scenes. Can't say the same about the Alola games.

Yup in the anime, Grant indeed had a Tyrunt, but his other Pokémon was Onix, which he used in his battle against Viola at the Battle Chateau. Thus, Ash knew what he was in for ahead of time when he saw Grant's Rock Tomb strategy. Ash came up with an idea to defeat Onix in the episode An Undersea Place to Call Home, an episode that was postponed due to the sinking of the MV Sewol ferry in South Korea in April 2014, as the episode was about seeing a ship that ended up at the bottom of the ocean called the SS Cussler. In the episode, Ash noticed Froakie make an incredible leap while carrying Skrelp in order to escape from a whirlpool. Thus, Froakie was key to defeating Onix in Climbing the Walls.
And yes, the Snorlax and Parfum Palace bit was in the anime too, but they approached it differently. Instead of on a bridge, Snorlax was sleeping in the middle of town and the gang learned that every year when the town does a harvest, Snorlax comes to eat, the town thus gets their fields plowed in the process, and they celebrate with a festival to thank him. Lord Shabboneau usually has the flute, but it was revealed Princess Allie of Parfum Palace took it. So they went to the palace, she challenges Ash to a battle, but despite Ash winning, she still refused to give the flute...until she let them have it on the condition of leaving Clemont with her. Of course, Clemont would end up escaping in the end, building a bot that would end up exploding.

DPPt never felt slow to me, i think it's just nocebo because everyone says it's slow so you get that impression but honestly it really isn't more slow than the other gens
If anything the lack of running shoes in gens 1 and 2 and them being disabled indoors in gen 3 makes these kind of a pain to replay from time to time, but then again speedup exists on emulator.
In terms of soul, content, balance, difficulity, game design and basically everything that matters gen 6 is way worse than the first 5 gens and it's only gotten worse since. To me XY is when pokemon stopped being good

    • @VideoGuy232
      @VideoGuy232 10 месяцев назад +2

Imo gen V was slow, especially toward the latter half of the game, (and the post game). The route>bridge>route sections overstayed their welcome for me. The bit between the 7th and 8th gym being the worst. But the segment between the 6th and 7th gym also drags.
Gen 2 had the best pacing imo, but I realize a lot of people needed to grind, so maybe not so great in that capacity. As far as moving to new towns, incorporating story beats from old ones, and seeing how your actions affect the towns: Gen 2 is the gold standard for pacing imo. None of the routes feel too long, there aren’t a bunch of towns/ houses with nothing in them (looking at you Gen 3/4), and the caves/dungeons never overstay their welcome aside from maybe the radio tower. Most of the towns in Gen 2 you’ll visit twice, and the revisits always feel organic/elaborate on something foreshadowed on your first visit, which makes them feel more memorable than towns in later entries. I replayed Gen 2 recently, and while it gets a lot of hate lately, I don’t think there was much to dislike (aside from the lack of Pokemon variety).
Truth is, every Pokemon game has egregiously slow sections. They usually backload them between the 6th gym and E4 (like the latter land portion/surfing sections in 3, the wintry part in 4, the routes and bridges in 5). In Gen 6 the slowest part was notably placed at the beginning of the game between the first two gyms (and it takes forever). Also worth noting is the victory roads in gens 3-6 are longer than those in 1/2.
At the end of the day I’d say most of the classic Pokemon games would’ve benefited from shaving hours off their gameplay. The slower segments can easily be explained by hardware improvements allowing for quicker battles/inputs, so in order to compensate Gamefreak started artificially inflating the runtime of their games, mostly by making routes longer with more trainers and just adding more routes/towns in general. This problem is most evident after Gen 2, when we saw the biggest leap in processing speed.

I think the story could have been so much more, as looking back on it the villain was very obvious, but at least the main characters were so unique! Amazing video!! Can't imagine all the time it must've taken to collect all of this. I will always have a soft spot for X&Y--I was also in high school at the time and the whole squad got so competitive with these games. I've never engaged more with the deeper mechanics of Pokemon than I did in this generation.
To this day I feel like one of Pokemon's biggest mistakes is skipping Pokemon Z! I know they pushed forward Sun and Moon because they wanted to capitalize on the 20th anniversary of Pokemon and the popularity of Pokemon GO, but I cant help but feel like it changed the trajectory of the franchise for the worse. And Kalos deserved to be more fully fleshed out! It has so many quirks and charms but it needed that 3rd entry to polish the rough edges more than any other game before it.

I'm still playing X to this day (mainly for the ribbons) but this game was peak for competitive battling. Reusable TMs and EV training is super quick compared to SV. O-Powers helping for breeding or leveling. Sure you can't max IV and level up Pokemon fast like in SV, but to EV train in the current game it takes a bit of time and resources. Mega Evolution will still be one of the funest mechanics for me and loved visiting old Pokemon with their new Mega Evolution forms. It was the first time they introduced a new mechanic into the game and went on to inspiring others (z-moves, dynamax, tera..). Seems like we've gone forward but also back in the new games. I rather plant and water berries to lower my EVs than playing mini games just for a chance at EV lowering items.

X and Y feel like a tech demo made to prove that mainline Pokémon can indeed work in 3D, especially because they were tossed aside almost immediately so Game Freak could work on Sun and Moon for the series’s 20th anniversary. What especially sucks about that is that the XYZ season of the anime showed what they could’ve done with a Pokémon Z, especially when Team Flare completely decimates Lumiose City and all of the trainers and Gym Leaders have to team up to stop Lysandre from using his Chespin-powered rock from destroying the world, and Zygarde has actual importance to the plot. Maybe we can get all that when they remake Gen 6 in 2036, but I’m not holding my breath.

I wish they could have given the other rivals more character development. You battle Calem and Serena many times throughout the story, while barely ever battling the other rivals. Gen 6 was the first fully 3d pokemon game so most of the focus went to the 3dness. The way towns were designed, trainer customization, all the (that the time) brand new 3d pokemon models and of course the new fairy type . So other things, like difficultly got pushed to the side for all the new features and looks. We can only hope that when gen 6 gets a remake theyll buff everything since those once new things aren't new anymore and the focus and go back to game play.

For as much as gen 6 floundered, there’s so many redeeming qualities as well. It was at least a decent transition into 3D and mega evos are still regarded as the best “battle gimmick” pokémon has EVER had. lest we forget that fairy type was introduced this gen, and the bits of lore that we do get are interesting and could’ve lead to more if gf had given us a third game or sequel.
lysandre could’ve been such a great villain with an interesting concept but his character is just lacking a little too much. the dichotomy of how serious he is with how goofy his team is, is also great.
every generation is someone’s favorite and even though this isn’t my number one it’s in my top 3 for sure. kalos is so charming in its own way, disjointed as it is.

One of the things I do to keep the gen 6 and beyond Pokémon games challenging and interesting (with the broken xp share turned on) is train a team of 12 instead of 6 where the 6 lowest leveled in my team are always party. I find this keeps you closer in level with in game trainers, allows you to experiment with new Pokémon, and your party will often not be perfectly balanced since its dependent on who your lowest levelled Pokémon are so that helps make some battles more interesting.
