I won’t act like X and Y is the best of the Pokémon series, but I do wish more people recognize that this game was a huge step away from the pixel style. I’m sure most of this game was experimental even for the Pokémon Company. There’s a lot of little things you can do that you couldn’t do in other games like rollerskating, customizing your character, customizable Pokémon (Furfrou mostly), full friend group (instead of 1-2 rivals), mega evolution, and probably more things I can’t remember at this moment. I think the saddest thing about this game is that Pokémon Z was scrapped cause it probably would have made the game feel complete.

The name of the mega evolution guru is Gurkinn! Though the name wasn't really mentioned in the games besides by like one NPC. Olympia should've been the eighth gym. Even the anime treated her as a far more important character than Wulfric. And yes, the design of the Gyms in this game is insane, they absolutely took full advantage of the 3D effect. I mean, the surprise of walking to the middle of what looks like a normal building in the Anistar Gym and seeing it all disappear as it turns into a sphere surrounded by a night sky with different galaxies and constellations was mind-blowing. Not to mention the stunning Coumarine Gym and the fact the first ever Fairy gym at Laverre City is a GIANT DOLLHOUSE...well played.
The buildings actually have life in them. The architecture, the soundtrack, the different Vivillon patterns, Mega evolutions, the XY games definitely deserve more love! I instantly fell in love with the entire Fennekin line, and while most of the rivals weren't interesting, I really enjoyed Shauna. The little story beat at the castle or whatever was really enjoyable to me for whatever reason. And Kalos' Pokémon League is by far the most beautiful League in the Pokémon world. Not to mention because the Z season of the XY anime was incredible. The XY anime introduced many to the franchise!

If you were a sophomore in high school when Gen 6 came out then I’m about 3 years younger than you. X and Y came out when I was starting 7th grade and I loved them. They were probably my favorite games when they released. I loved strolling around on the roller skates, exploring all the buildings in the towns and cities (especially in Lumiose), finding new Pokémon, and using the new Mega Evolutions (which is still the best generational mechanic). Now, 10 years later, they’re not my favorite games anymore-not even my favorite Pokemon games. I can see their problems and shortcomings. But when I go back to them, nostalgia takes over and I still feel the wonder I had when I first played them.
3 years after X and Y released, Sun and Moon came out. By then, I would have been as old as you were when Gen 6 was new, and I was disenchanted by them. I didn’t care for a lot of the new characters, new locations, or new mechanics. I didn’t really care for Team Skull at first and I thought the lack of gym battles and traditional badges was off-putting. I finished the games once and put them away, immediately going back to my favorites from Gens 3 through 6.
I can’t say for certain whether it’s that age where Pokémon feels stale, but it is interesting that 10th grade is where I also had a falling out with the series, after being a fan for years. I did enjoy Legends Arceus and Scarlet / Violet, so I’m still a fan of the series, but there was definitely a lull in my enjoyment from 2016 to 2021

Yup in the anime, Grant indeed had a Tyrunt, but his other Pokémon was Onix, which he used in his battle against Viola at the Battle Chateau. Thus, Ash knew what he was in for ahead of time when he saw Grant's Rock Tomb strategy. Ash came up with an idea to defeat Onix in the episode An Undersea Place to Call Home, an episode that was postponed due to the sinking of the MV Sewol ferry in South Korea in April 2014, as the episode was about seeing a ship that ended up at the bottom of the ocean called the SS Cussler. In the episode, Ash noticed Froakie make an incredible leap while carrying Skrelp in order to escape from a whirlpool. Thus, Froakie was key to defeating Onix in Climbing the Walls.
And yes, the Snorlax and Parfum Palace bit was in the anime too, but they approached it differently. Instead of on a bridge, Snorlax was sleeping in the middle of town and the gang learned that every year when the town does a harvest, Snorlax comes to eat, the town thus gets their fields plowed in the process, and they celebrate with a festival to thank him. Lord Shabboneau usually has the flute, but it was revealed Princess Allie of Parfum Palace took it. So they went to the palace, she challenges Ash to a battle, but despite Ash winning, she still refused to give the flute...until she let them have it on the condition of leaving Clemont with her. Of course, Clemont would end up escaping in the end, building a bot that would end up exploding.

A part of it was probably the addition of the fairy type, which quickly became my favorite. The starters are all great too, which is a nice change from Unova (I know a lot of people are only fans of Froakie, but I actually love them all.
The game is definitely too easy, but it's still a fun experience, and the graphics are pretty good and despite having too many "friends" in this game, I think they did a good job of not spending too much time on explanations and cut scenes. Can't say the same about the Alola games.

Most of the points you make are valid... but could be said of other older generations as well. I personally had a harder time playing platinum, it felt so slow. Best pacing might be gen 1 and 5 I think.

DPPt never felt slow to me, i think it's just nocebo because everyone says it's slow so you get that impression but honestly it really isn't more slow than the other gens
If anything the lack of running shoes in gens 1 and 2 and them being disabled indoors in gen 3 makes these kind of a pain to replay from time to time, but then again speedup exists on emulator.
In terms of soul, content, balance, difficulity, game design and basically everything that matters gen 6 is way worse than the first 5 gens and it's only gotten worse since. To me XY is when pokemon stopped being good

    • @VideoGuy232
      @VideoGuy232 9 месяцев назад +2

Imo gen V was slow, especially toward the latter half of the game, (and the post game). The route>bridge>route sections overstayed their welcome for me. The bit between the 7th and 8th gym being the worst. But the segment between the 6th and 7th gym also drags.
Gen 2 had the best pacing imo, but I realize a lot of people needed to grind, so maybe not so great in that capacity. As far as moving to new towns, incorporating story beats from old ones, and seeing how your actions affect the towns: Gen 2 is the gold standard for pacing imo. None of the routes feel too long, there aren’t a bunch of towns/ houses with nothing in them (looking at you Gen 3/4), and the caves/dungeons never overstay their welcome aside from maybe the radio tower. Most of the towns in Gen 2 you’ll visit twice, and the revisits always feel organic/elaborate on something foreshadowed on your first visit, which makes them feel more memorable than towns in later entries. I replayed Gen 2 recently, and while it gets a lot of hate lately, I don’t think there was much to dislike (aside from the lack of Pokemon variety).
Truth is, every Pokemon game has egregiously slow sections. They usually backload them between the 6th gym and E4 (like the latter land portion/surfing sections in 3, the wintry part in 4, the routes and bridges in 5). In Gen 6 the slowest part was notably placed at the beginning of the game between the first two gyms (and it takes forever). Also worth noting is the victory roads in gens 3-6 are longer than those in 1/2.
At the end of the day I’d say most of the classic Pokemon games would’ve benefited from shaving hours off their gameplay. The slower segments can easily be explained by hardware improvements allowing for quicker battles/inputs, so in order to compensate Gamefreak started artificially inflating the runtime of their games, mostly by making routes longer with more trainers and just adding more routes/towns in general. This problem is most evident after Gen 2, when we saw the biggest leap in processing speed.

    • @tabbender1232
      @tabbender1232 9 месяцев назад +2

@@VideoGuy232 The only time where grinding is a requirement in gen 2 is for Red, and even that can be avoided by using the box legends that will naturally be higher level than your team will be at this point, or even using items in battle, switch mode etc. "Level cap" nuzlockers do NOT understand how gens 1 and 2 were designed.

I want to call x and y bad, but I can’t. They were the first pokemon games that I ever played and spent countless hours in the post game to get almost every legendary possible. I think the story could have been so much more, as looking back on it the villain was very obvious, but at least the main characters were so unique! If not in their personality, at least in their design

I was very reluctant to play X&Y games, but they ended up surprising me in a good way. I really liked the story, even though there are a few things that could improve, such as your rivals, Calem/Serena was kinda disappointing I was more shocked about Shauna's growth lol. And team Flare definitely lacked substance. But it was such a fun game to play overall ❤

X and Y feel like a tech demo made to prove that mainline Pokémon can indeed work in 3D, especially because they were tossed aside almost immediately so Game Freak could work on Sun and Moon for the series’s 20th anniversary. What especially sucks about that is that the XYZ season of the anime showed what they could’ve done with a Pokémon Z, especially when Team Flare completely decimates Lumiose City and all of the trainers and Gym Leaders have to team up to stop Lysandre from using his Chespin-powered rock from destroying the world, and Zygarde has actual importance to the plot. Maybe we can get all that when they remake Gen 6 in 2036, but I’m not holding my breath.

I gotta say, I believe that some of our questions about AZ and the Ultimate Weapon will be answered in the new Legends game. I have high expectations for this game since I started playing Pokémon in gen 6 so I hope they put a lotta time and effort into the upcoming game and make it a fun and unique experience like Arceus was. OMG you picked the cutest outfits and hairstyles for this whole adventure. I think they shafted the male characters a tiny bit, especially for a place as fashion forward as the game is set in.
And I don't want to get into the (objectively bad) decrease in player options from future games rant. But of all those things that would make me want to see a sequel/remake of this game all those options are the biggest one.

Amazing video!! Can't imagine all the time it must've taken to collect all of this. I will always have a soft spot for X&Y--I was also in high school at the time and the whole squad got so competitive with these games. I've never engaged more with the deeper mechanics of Pokemon than I did in this generation.
To this day I feel like one of Pokemon's biggest mistakes is skipping Pokemon Z! I know they pushed forward Sun and Moon because they wanted to capitalize on the 20th anniversary of Pokemon and the popularity of Pokemon GO, but I cant help but feel like it changed the trajectory of the franchise for the worse. And Kalos deserved to be more fully fleshed out! It has so many quirks and charms but it needed that 3rd entry to polish the rough edges more than any other game before it.

The number of Pokémon you are just given by this game is insane. 2 starters, that one Farfetch'd you can trade for in the first gym town, a Lucario, a Lapras, a prehistoric Pokémon from the fossil, and the Legendary that the plot requires you to catch. Your whole party could basically be entirely curated by the game.

For as much as gen 6 floundered, there’s so many redeeming qualities as well. It was at least a decent transition into 3D and mega evos are still regarded as the best “battle gimmick” pokémon has EVER had. lest we forget that fairy type was introduced this gen, and the bits of lore that we do get are interesting and could’ve lead to more if gf had given us a third game or sequel.
lysandre could’ve been such a great villain with an interesting concept but his character is just lacking a little too much. the dichotomy of how serious he is with how goofy his team is, is also great.
every generation is someone’s favorite and even though this isn’t my number one it’s in my top 3 for sure. kalos is so charming in its own way, disjointed as it is.

x was my first pokémon game and yes it is easy, but not because of the exp share. in fact i am here to defend the exp share because the game is built around you using it-it's a key item for a reason. because without it, the level spikes get weird and you'll be fighting against trainers with randomly high leveled pokemon (i remember at the power plant aliana has a higher leveled mightyena then all of clemont's pokémon for some reason?) i think the key to not having your pokémon be overleveled is to catch a lot of them. xy have, in my opinion, the best selection of pokémon to use from. there's so much variety (and i think they are the games with the most pokémon in their regional dex) and it really does evoke the motivation of wanting to catch them all. so instead of using your starter as a crutch, catch all the super cool pokémon and switch teams regularly.
but xy are so easy because the important battles are a joke. sure, some of them have coverage-viola's surskit against fire types, and ramos' gogoat against ice and poison types, but the fact all of the gym leaders have pokémon that don't even have a full moveset, even wulfric?? and some gym leaders lack any coverage, just bring a ghost type against korrina and she may as well just give you the gym badge on turn one. also none of them take advantage of mega evolution outside of korrina, but she doesn't even use it in her gym battle. (although i guess this is more of mega evolution's fault for not giving a lot of kalos pokémon mega evolutions and instead deciding charizard and mewtwo needed two. and for what) the elite four don't even have full teams for arceus' sake. there's some other poor movesets other trainers have but i'll leave it at that.
probably the other criticisms i have against xy are how blatant lysandre's intentions are and team flare just being a joke. the rivals are not very interesting, and xy sure like to nostalgia bait, i'm almost shocked they didn't remake red and blue again instead of doing oras. but i have to admit, kalos is such a gorgeous region. lumiose city is so fun to traverse across, and while there's some undeveloped areas (looking at you camphrier with your useless castle), the towns are pretty distinct from each other, both in aesthetic, people, and things to do. the lore is also very interesting (and i hope the new legends game does it justice), the online features are easy to use without needing any gimmicks, pokémon-amie and super training are cool, and the clothing!! boys get shafted as usual but they do have some nice options.
overall despite its flaws i think pokémon xy are a fun time. just traveling throughout kalos and having a wide selection of pokémon to catch reminds me of why i used to love this franchise so much, because i don't play the newer games.

I think this game has always been underrated, its no gen 4/5 but its a solid game.
You can skip paying for the mansion if you spend all your money right before it.
Tipping increases your reputation which will let you access that fancy shop in Lumiose City.
Paldea was apparently the region that they were having the war with so Aria Zero might be why they had the tech.
There is a pokeball shop that sells all the semi-unique balls that broke me for catching Pokemon in random balls.
I think the reason easy mode is a thing is because most of the people who started on gen 1 were finishing up college and or having kids at this point in time and they wanted to draw in a new younger audience.
This game actually brought me back into the franchise as i wasn't super invested in gen 4/5 since I had moved more into PC gaming. It is one of the main reasons I still own a Nintendo system as my only up to date console.

I wish they could have given the other rivals more character development. You battle Calem and Serena many times throughout the story, while barely ever battling the other rivals. I actually really liked Pokémon X (I'd played Y back in the day, and couldn't get myself to play through the same thing again back-to-back, same with Ultra Sun). X/Y felt like the last "OG" Pokémon games, and most of my complaints with the games at their launch don't really bother me anymore (I used to be like "Why can't I cross the river in the route with the daycare?", etc, as if Pokémon didn't have a long history of having areas you couldn't reach).

The BIG issues I have with the game is all the cut content in the game. Lots of end game content was cut and you can cheat out a bunch of the stuff but that doesn't fix all the gameplay that is missing to get it. Feels like an incomplete product and that is why I dislike the game so much and I actually never have bought a pokemon game after this one and I am glad cause they have gone downhill from black and white 2. Hot take black and white/b&w2 were peak pokemon games. The mix of 2D with moving animations for stuff was the best art design wise and the lore and story in it was peak. Granted pokemon designs were getting meh starting with those games but I think they were the best and are my favorite pokemon games.
