  • Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
I have received another wonderful present by Maria, an Austrian follower. Dankeschoen, grazie, thank you Maria!!
(I really must thank you Maria and all my other followers that have allowed my channel to grow and that interact me and each other. Watercolor is a wonderful community!)
Anyway, Maria has sent me 12 pans of Schminke Akademie, their student grade watercolor paint.
Schminke is famous especially for Horadam, the professional range, and for the supergranulating set: but I'm sure you will be surprised by this!

Wow I’m really impressed with the pigmentation of the student grade. I love listening to people who have English as their second language. I’m aware how difficult it is to learn. You use quite high vocabulary words at times that I know a lot of native English speaking people struggle with. I was taught that of the 5 levels of English I should ensure I use a level 2 when speaking with general public in a medical setting and so I know how much of the population struggles with syntax here. I love that I can watch your channel because of all your hard work to learn English even though you are so far away from me.

Thank you so much!! To be honest to talk about watercolour in English is not always plain sailing and I sometimes miss a word…are you a doctor? My husband is a doctor and he says that he needs to speak in a very simple understandable manner in Italian! Anyway, thank you so much!! Have a lovely Sunday!

I really like your side by side comparison of the Schmincke colors. One thing I discovered recently is that the student grades are sometimes completely different than the professional grade colors. Not so much here but one example is Winsor & Newton Payne’s Gray. The Cotman line is more of a blackish gray, whereas the professional line is very different, more of a bluish gray. I discovered this by doing a side by side comparison. If you have a lot of W&N professional and Cotman colors I would love to see a side by side comparison video. Cheers Elisabetta!

I have the same untoxic finest colors by this brand schmincke from the akademie series ...
in my opinion is this a very good starter set for newbies, students and artist´s to :)
as you have seen, they are all very easy to rewet, highpigmented and also very useful for mixing for all what you need to create what you want on a good watercolor paper.
I beleave you will have a lot of fun with this color selection like me 😃

They are gorgeous, and as you said, slightly less pigmented. A high quality watercolor for students, they behave as artist grade but as a cheaper option for students for practicing, as you don't use your more expensive professional ones for studies ;) I love them, I got the 24 akademie set from last year for xmas only for the tin!! Hahahaha and at the end, the paints are great!

    Love, love this review! :D
My first comment was eaten by YT, so let me try to remember what I had written.
To answer to a couple of questions, the Akademie half pans can be replaced. The whole range consists of 24 colours and you can buy them in sets of 12 or 24 half or full pans. They used to come in tubes, but I’m afraid they have been either discontinued, or they only come in special editions. I’ve got a nice set of 24 15ml tubes in a tin box.
This was a curated set that came with one of those colourful special edition boxes that Schmincke offer from time to time. They mostly come with this assortment of Akademie half pans.
Your version of Horadam Ultramarine Blue is not the one I would choose. They offer better options imho; my favourite ist the Ultramarine Finest (non granulating PB29), and French Ultramarine (granulating PB29), and a warmer rather blue violet version with the Ultramarine Violet (granulating PB29/PV?)
You made me chuckle with your „bronze medal“ for the Burnt Umber; I totally agree with you! :D
Delighted you were pleased with the Blackwing pencil and the brush.
Thank you for a wonderful, detailed review and comparison.

Akademie is no doubt one of the best student grade paints. I had kind of a strange experience switching from Akademie to Horadam, the paints were just so good I almost didn't like them; so voluptuous and almost exploding with pigment I had trouble working with them att first. It took a short while to get used to them, and since I did I. just don't touch the Akademie paints anymore. Some days I'm thinking "today I'm going to use my old student grade paints and just play", but Immediately I start feeling like I miss a particular colour I'm very fond of, or just the feeling of the higher grade paints.
I think on their own you're hard pressed to tell them apart. There is a difference, but it's very subtle and hard to describe, something about how the paint feels when. you're working with it. It could just be the oxgall, I wasn't aware the student paints didn't use oxgall. Or maybe the higher pigmenet concentration makes the Horadam paints feel more creamy, I don't know. I just know I love them. :)

Hi Irma!! I agree Horadam is so unique! Despite the fact that Akademie is probably the best student grade around…for me also it’s difficult to go back to student grade… I hate to waste paint so I sometimes do for quick studies… thanks for your comment and have a lovely Sunday!

So glad you tried them and made the video. Schmincke Akademie were my first watercolors. I got a 12 pan set when i was around 10 years old and since I'm in love with watercolors.
Funny that you say the same as I, that they're more in between student and artist grade. For my they're definitely the best student grade you can find. I like van Gogh but Schmincke Akademie is better.
Schmincke Akademie colors are all vegan as far as i know, that's what the Schmincke homepage says. I'm not sure right now if they have a PBk9 which isn't vegan.
The pans aren't sold individually sadly, but the sets (12 or 24 pans) often have beautiful tins and are a really good deal when on sale.
Schmincke Horadam ultramarine: Schmincke has 3 different versions the very odd two pigment mix you have, a single pigment version called ultramarine finest wich is finely milled so not much granulation and a single pigment version wich granulates called frech ultramarine
I know that there exists Schmincke Akademie tubes but they're produced for the chinese market so they're very hard to get. They even have a Schmincke Akademie supergranulation colors in tubes also for the Chinese market. They can be bought on AliExpress, but I haven't bought them so far.
    Wish you a wonderful week.

@@awatercolourist that's cool. Funny thing is I live in Germany and it's a German brand but never have seen them being sold individually. I have all 24 colors and love them all. My oldest pans which still works perfectly are 28 years old. I've compared them with never pans (I've bought some sets with beautiful tins when they were on a massive sale) and they look exactly the same. Still works perfectly. The only negative point I have with them is the price, they're very expensive for them officially being student grade.

You’re right, it’s not easy to do a comparison between tubes and pans, even when they’re in the same professional grade by the same maker, I’ve tried. Daniel Smith sat green in a tube and in a pants and they’re completely different hues i’d like to see you try this where it’s from Dry Watercolor to dry water colour because having wet water colour against hands, even though they’re different grade is very different again
