    Some of us were never lucky enough to see Foreigner in person. I got to spend a fantastic night enjoying well played Foreigner hits with other people who at least know the songs, if not other real fans. And I got to see Mick play. No illusions. It was a one-off for me. Kelly, and the others in the new band, obviously did their homework and learned all of the songs from the records. I appreciate that. But no, it's not Foreigner anymore. And I will never get the chance to see Lou in all his glory with them. Sometimes we just have to take what we get and be grateful that we even got that. We still have Lou's voice immortalized on vinyl, etc. I am VERY grateful for that! ❤

    The huge difference is not only was Lou Gramm a great singer but his input in writing songs with Foreigner is obviously missing, whatever magical collaboration Jones, Gramm and the original band had in writing great songs is long long gone, Hanson may be able to slightly replicate the singing but it’s really nothing more than a tribute band who couldn’t write a hit on their own and are just living off the past

As a true blue " Foreigner" fan, I can tell you I loved every song Lou ever did, never hit the skip button or fast forward on his OG Foreigner! I cannot say the same with the latest. I must add, I did like the Johnny guy that filled in temporarily for Lou

    • @waltersimmons946
      @waltersimmons946 10 месяцев назад

      Johnny Edwards was Lous first replacement when Lou went officially solo in 1990. Edwards was then chosen over Mark Free (King Kobra) and yep, the current guy Kelly Hansen who was in HURRICANE. Even Billy Joel told Mick Jones he liked Johnny and did not "dig" the other two after Mick played to Billy their demos.

      @shelbywilkerson235 Lol 😆 yeah . I still play the Unusual Heat CD every night myself. Edwards has a band (since 2015) called BLEU PHONQUE *pronounced blue funk*. The live performances of him with his band are on RUclips and he had a band after he left Foreigner called ROYAL JELLY (1994) The album is by the bands name . The song 🎵 that was released is called "CEILING" . Edwards actually retired from music 🎶 from 1995 to 2015. He came out with his current band after his two daughters finished college and were out on their own. Bleu phonque released a CD in 2018 but they will remain a local band in Kentucky where Edwards is from. So he didn't give up. He does Foreigner songs 🎵 at events in Kentucky because people do ask for him so he's not forgotten about as it seems.

    • @waltersimmons946
      @waltersimmons946 10 месяцев назад

      @shelbywilkerson235 Johnny was asked by an interview (podcast) about being re-called. He said he felt they (Foreigner after he was out) were trying to bury that chapter of his tenure in the band. For years, Johnny's name was actually barely mentioned on Foreigners' website or anywhere. By bringing Hansen in by 2005. They had no choice but to come clean that this was not the first time Lous was replaced. Also let me tell you this. Lou left in 2003 because of Micks ALCOHOLISM 🍸 and revived disagreements. Lous parents died that year 7 months apart. Edwards was in Foreigner for two years 1990-1992 and made one album "Unusual Heat " Lowdown and Dirty was a minor hit charting at #4. Hansen has been in Foreigner for 18 yrs. He only made one album 2009s CANT SLOW DOWN. It seems other than singing Gramms songs 🎵 that Hansen really did NO more for the band than Edwards. Yep, Foreigners got TRIBUTE BAND stamped all over it.

    I grew up with real Foriegner. But I also did go see the new Foriegner and got to meet the band. After a few songs in of course the realization was there that they will not ever be Foriegner as I knew them. Lou Gramm can never be replaced. But I kind of have to give kudos to Jones for coming up with a great money making scheme. The other players were high vibe and running about the stage. And I can't blame Hansen for not turning down the gig. It would be impossible to ever replicate the original Foriegner. (Which I never had the pleasure of seeing live) . But hey, if people are buying tickets and coming to watch, in this day and age, who can blame them for trying. I think Hansen is a class act guy and does his best. But at the end of the day Lou Gramm can never be replaced.

      Attraction??? The problem is "Young" people do not realize that the real magic and real talent is CREATING all that music in the first place. And, as a singer, I can tell you that there is a big difference in the heart and soul that comes from a vocal. All the new singer is doing is copying notes of a song. And here lies the problem. Obviously your entitled to that opinion but sadly it's about loyalty and keeping the original alive. It's about sharing that music with our youth so they can hear how incredible the original band was. What's next a new incarnation the of the Stones, or Aerosmith, hell why don't we just copy all the old bands because our youth needs something new to listen to...give me a break. I'm happy you experienced the original Foreigner, as did I, but throwing new people on stage and calling themselves Foreigner is a joke. When a band is done and finished, that should be it. Why don't you find some guys and make a new Queen while your at it....Smh.

    I cannot bear to see Kelly Hansen a man in his mid 50's jump around in tight clothing and prance like a rock star when he has not had a hit in his life. I can't watch the new Foreigner. I saw Lou and Foreigner in 1977 on their first tour and I was mesmerized. It was a religious experience. I saw musicians like Ed Gagliardi on bass and Al Greenwood on keyboards and Ian McDonald who played multiple instruments from guitar to keyboard to flute to sax all well. And Lou was stunning in his vocals and Mick Jones was a solid guitarist. The show I saw in October 1977 was something I'll never forget and the clinic Ian McDonald put on playing all those instruments was something I'd never seen in a concert in all my life. I was in the balcony of the theater right above Ian McDonald and saw him pick up and play one instrument after another all brilliantly. That show in October of 1977 was so impactful to me that the current band is a farce and I will not go to see them. Lou is Foreigner.

Kelly is not Lou, he gets out there to do the job he was hired to do & he does it at a high level. It's hard singing those songs day in & out. And he does it. On the other hand Lou was phenomenal in his time. Lou can't even sing those songs in the standard key anymore because his voice won't let him. He still singing & is sounding ok. But his band has to tune down a whole key & he has to sing in a lower key because he can't do it anymore. So stop acting like Kelly stole money outta your house & understand that the show must go on, people have to keep workin & paying bills. And appreciate Foreigner, the Kelly Hanson era. Ah this is a very touchy subject. Now let me begin by saying I am a dinosaur closing in on 60. I had the good fortune of seeing the original Foreigner in the early eighties,(amazing) great pop rock tunes with Lou's unmistakeable vocals. I've also seen the "Kelly" version 2015 or 16. Now my observation when they came out was dam they sound great....including Kelly who like it or not nails Lou in his prime,(just being honest). I also noticed as you did that there was not an original member,(they trotted out Grampa for a few songs). I leaned over to my wife and said that is a "tribute" act......a good one but by definition a tribute act. I have nothing at all against tribute acts,(I've worked in a few). They introduce those amazing songs to a whole new generation and affirm what we already know.......this music has staying power far beyond it's original demographic. This speaks to all the top tier tribute acts. My daughter is a huge Brit Floyd fan who only recently got to see Roger Waters. Sadly all of those guys are leaving us but their songs will remain. In that respect I do believe tribute acts perform a vital service.........however,(there's always a but) trotting out an act with no original members and calling it by it's "franchise" name is pretty close to fraud. Just my humble opinion.

    I introduced my grandson to Foreigner, the REAL Foreigner, thru my old albums. He is 14 and loves them. When he heard they were coming to a town close by he, of course, wanted to go. He was soooo disappointed when I told him that the band that was pretending to be Foreigner now is just like you said, a "tribute" band. Lou Gramm was, is and always will be the heart and soul of Foreigner. I'm not sure anyone who goes and sees this tribute band were ever really fans of Foreigner. If they were they'd know better.

    Dude!! You failed to mention this interview! So cool and I bet you were on the verge of wetting your pants! Lou is a living legend who can never truly be replaced. That said, I'm actually "ok" with the current incarnation IF, and it's a BIG if, Mick is on stage with them. Without him, it is not Foreigner. I saw them years back without Mick when he was ill and Joel Hoekstra filled in, while playing double duty with Night Ranger the same night. Joel was great, but as you say, they were a tribute act at that show. If Mick is too frail to contribute 100% of the time, it is indeed time to give it up and live off those royalties!

    The nail was hit on the head. This is more or less a tribute band now. And i don't mean to take away from them, they're really good, including Kelly, but growing up with the original Foreigner being part of the soundtrack of my late teens/early 20's, I doubt i'd go see the current line-up if they came to my town...it just wouldn't be the same. I did get to see Lou and the original Foreigner back in '85...it was a sold out show (pun intended)...fantastic show!

    I would advance the theory that fans know what they're paying for and make their own decisions. If the original lineup can no longer go and this is how their music is kept alive and fans are okay with it, let it be. It works for some groups, not for others. This particular lineup is incredibly talented and put on a great show. Have seen them upstage a number of headline bands that do have their original members (are you reading this Neal Schon?)

But, having said that, let's be clear -- Lou Gramm is what made Foreigner what it was. Those songs were made great due to his voice. Plain and simple. In the 80s Lou was one of the best rock singers and will be remembered as such. Incredible that Mick Jones F'd him over as he did.

    Some members can't be replaced. Once you do it's not worth it. When all members are replaced then it's completely pointless. Weirdly, the only band that was able to replace its iconic singer was Journey. Arnel does an amazing job in place of Steve. But Lou's voice is hard to replace. There's a rawness and grit too it with a lot of power.
