bird in your teeth is one of the motifs in the album. she mentioned it in “moon song” in the line “i’ll wait till the next time you want me, like a dog with a bird at your door”, this is a metaphor that she’s doing everything she can desperately to please and impress her partner but doesn’t understand that she might hurt them in the process. she followed up that line with “but the killer doesn’t understand” in moon song. that’s one of the metaphors ingrained in my mind because of how different it is
The "bird in your teeth" is a call back to an earlier song on the album. she says something like "ill wait for the next time you want me, like a dog with a bird in its teeth," i think she is saying that a dog brings a bird in its teeth to its owner in order to get their attention and also to impress.
the other voice you hear come in towards the end is Lucy Dacus. Phoebe, Lucy, and Julien Baker regularly show up in each others songs on backing vocals and stuff! Pheobe's song "Graceland Too" you can hear julien, in one of Julien songs "Favor" you can hear them, and in Lucy's song "Please Stay" they're also there. All 3 of them also formed a supergroup called Boygenius and released an EP back in 2018, its so worth checking out! Phoebe's song off that EP is "Me & My Dog" and that song is so GOOD live, I'd recommend checking out the Brooklyn Steel show here on youtube, Phoebe belts!
