I'm a joiner myself. I started my apprenticeship in 1975 and finished with my exams certificate 3 years later. So I know my way through some joints, BUT, when I see what these artists come up with, I have to bow down and hang my head in shame. The precision and complexity is jaw dropping. The Japanese/Asian joiners/carpenters/cabinetmakers are second to none. I rest my case.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful video demonstrating one of the forms of...丸太ひかりつけ - Maruta hikaritsu ke...If I may help with some translation to English...Yes...this joint method is used in different parts of both floor and roof systems of traditional timber frames in Asia, including Japan...IT IS NOT...!!!....a "rafter"...(i.e. 尾垂木 - Odaruki...서까래 - Seokkalae...椽架 - Chuán jià ...垂木 - Taruki ...扠首 - Sasu ...etc)...or any part of a rafter timber assembly nor joins..."Rafters and Purlins"...at all...
This type of joinery is more often found at the location of the 地棟 - Jimune, or "base ridge," timber assemblies where the timber plate has other principal transverse beams like the 梁, - Hari resting as you find in vernacular houses such as 民家 - Minka where it ties the frame together near the 近畿 - Kinki region of the roof...The name of this joinery is different in different parts of Japan. The family of joinery it belongs to is 蟻落し - Ariotoshi...The family of "dropped in" lapped dovetail joints...and the related joints like 相欠き - Aikaki (Lap Joint) 相欠き接ぎ - Aikaki hagi (Housed Lap Joint)...
If readers of this comment are really curious...Put the knaji...ひかり板...in a Google search and go to images to see some of the different methods. ひかり板 - Hikari ita... is what this method is based on for layout but of course there is a lot more to all of this...
