  • Veteran has PTSD attack in middle of interview. Now watch his service dog calm him down
    To many, Erick Scott seems like the perfect husband and father, but he’s much more than that - he’s also a veteran. However, like most of our brave veterans, Erick would struggle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, nearly ruining his life, until Gumbo came along. +Phuubz, especially cats. Cats are perfect angels. My cat knows when I'm not feeling well, and she'll come right over and purr me to sleep. She'll hiss at and attack (if necessary) anyone who approaches me while I sleep. Unlike dogs, cats are scientifically proven to prefer interaction with their human over food itself. And cats have been shown through fMRI scans to think about memories they have and enjoy the experience. They are arguably more mature emotionally than dogs.
      Also bears are pretty sweet, as I'm sure Mikey Mike will agree with.

      Volga Wolfhounds I thought that it was something about me that made people go out of their way to antagonize me. After seeing it happen to other vets, I think maybe its just the new American way. Most were not brought up in nieghborhoods where looking at someone the wrong way is enough to get a person killed. They are lacking whatever sense that tells them there may be danger because they're in their own world. Or, may be they have a death wish?
      LOTS and LOTS of veterans in this country. We're all doing our very best not to snap; but people are so testy anymore.

I don't have a service dog not yet anyway but my psychiatrist says I can get one because of my mental illnesses. But it hurts being invalidated like that being told my PTSD doesn't exist when i struggle with it each day.

    • @nellieshoals
      @nellieshoals 6 лет назад +83

      Actually, over half of all people who have PTSD are women who have survived domestic violence. People seem to think it's just a military thing, but that's ignorance. I wish more people understood that any type of trauma can cause PTSD, and that we have a lot more types of trauma than military combat that people experience in this world.

    • @Undomaranel
      @Undomaranel 6 лет назад +49

      I agree. Whenever my PTSD and depression comes up I always get asked, "Military?" I reply no, and the asker becomes crestfallen, as if I'm weak or trying to ride the gravy train when I didn't "do anything" of merit to earn my PTSD badge. I'm so sorry I've been disqualified from service since childhood, courtesy of my parents. And no, asker, I don't feel like continuing a conversation with someone who disregards my daily struggles because I didn't fight in a political war, disregarding my mental, emotional, and other various scars that affect me and how I interact with people because I didn't earn it "honorably."
      I do appreciate that the disorder has gained awareness (when I was diagnosed nobody knew what it was), but per the norm with humanity they only associate what the media says about it. Ignorance at it's finest :)

      +That Aussie Bloke, "Shell Shock" and "PTSD" aren't the same thing though. Shell Shock refers to traumatic concussive brain injuries, caused by being near to an explosion (like mortars or artillery) as they occur.
      PTSD is a brain disorder resulting from exposure to psychological trauma.
      In the old days, they thought all of it was the former, and didn't realize the latter existed.

    This video touched me I just want to share my story: This past summer as a part of my Infantry unit i almost died by four folks ambushing me in a neo-nazi attack in atlantic canada which almost killed me *I tried to prevent an attack an African-Canadian male*; haven't seen treatment yet but i have flashbacks and panic attacks but good god am i glad to have survived. I was out cold with my eyes open not breathing for at least 40 seconds. I have shit memory , flashbacks, i had thoughts of self harm in the middle of panic attacks and outbursts of anger. Above all else I want to do my country proud I'm scared of ever leaving my unit and letting on how much it effected me. I haven't seen a doc but i'm thinking about it because it seems like i could have ptsd.

    As a submarine service veteran who struggles with PTSD on a daily basis, I can totally empathize with Erick - and his dog is just amazing. He knew that his owner was starting to have an "episode" and shut it down immediately. I hate politicians who are so quick to send our youth to war - only to ignore them (or not provide adequate care) when they return. A lot of people who have never served have NO idea what it's like to be in these high stress environments, and it can completely wreck you when you lose a close friend.

    • @dylanmorgan2752
      @dylanmorgan2752 6 лет назад

      +Guacamole weed and shrooms don’t work on everyone the same way they do in your own personal headspace. For people with autism, anxiety or a number of other pre existing mental conditions, there’s no telling how positive or negative the results can be, considering hallucinogens such as shrooms particularly can have lasting impact. Not saying not worth a try, just not the answer to everyone’s problems as they are to edgy teenagers. Least of all everyday use, which whether you’re putin or trump whoever, everyday weed would result in a lot of people having severely limited productivity. Guess what leaders are uptight bc of the amount of decisions they make on the worlds behalf, sometimes tyrannically yes, but still working to represent the greater number of productive members of society who don’t need to constantly blur themselves through the day. Also it’s not right morally, to assume that a soldier has confirmed kills over seas, it’s detrimental to having any kind of conversation with

    • @dylanmorgan2752
      @dylanmorgan2752 6 лет назад

      +Guacamole one who suffers from mental disorders, I wouldn’t prescribe shrooms to this individual or most service people with ptsd as the sheer hallucinogenic properties could leave irreparable damage considering some veterans who’ve most likely seen less or worse than this gentleman can have flashbacks just from hearing a cars engine starting up or something as small as a pen clicking or glass breaking etc etc. As for killing Arabs, that’s something quite frankly they can do for themselves like they’ve done since humans could write about it, plus if we were to measure its value this guy would be referred to as a tampon who only got used once a month, but there are full army and marine units that a lot of which have 100% in the past that have done worse. As for measuring the heroism, if he has killed someone, then yh fuck the political agenda like always, but tbh since the start of prosaic storytelling in archaic Greece and the east, killing in war has and will for a long time remain

    • @dylanmorgan2752
      @dylanmorgan2752 6 лет назад

      +Guacamole the most traditionally epic and stereotypically heroic format to display courage and character under duress, which doesn’t happen when you sit around in your room smoking pot and your parents hate you. The only things that can stand neck and neck with it would be civilian acts of courage such as standing up in the face of social injustice in proper protest or being recognised for great effort from productivity among other qualities by your peers and friends. Either way, whether you give a shit or anyone else does, as of right now this man is considered a hero to a lot more people than you are telling national leaders to hit a bong shot or two, so my advice if you’ve read this far through the haze is quit the ganja every now and then and do something that matters.

      Volga Wolfhounds That is incorrect considering cats have been scientifically proven with brain stimulation and such to have affectionate feelings for humans and other cats as well as other animals. To say a cat doesn't love and is incapable of loving humans is to say you can jump off of a bridge and using an acorn fly to Russia. Than turn right around and state it is a fact because. If you hate cats don't be dumb and lie. Simply say so. After all you wouldn't want someone gong not around saying it's "proven" that dogs are stupid.

    This is why you can't compare dogs to any other animal. They have evolved alongside humans for thousands of years with the purpose of being human's best friend and family. They are the closest animals to humans. They have the most similarities to humans (not genetically, that belongs to chimps) . It sickens me to think dogs are being tortured and slaughtered for food when they are almost human.

    • @catlover1986

      +LedZep's X, cats have spent the last 14,000 years with humans, and they self domesticated.
      Cats are arguably the closest animals to humans. When you have a cat, they treat you as an equal, a dog acts like your slave. If a human were turned into an animal one day, they would be closest to a cat, above all else.

      +96money96, The US has never fought a war for "religious reasons" though. The US doesn't invade a country for "economic reasons". The US has only invaded genocidal/atrocity committing countries, usually that are gunning down their own citizens for daring to stand up for freedom, and most of those countries were invaded because of their development of or use of weapons of mass destruction against civilian populations.

    Walmart is on a national mission to ban American Disabled Veterans, needing Service Animals, from their stores. I am a 100% Service-Connected Disabled Veteran and Walmart assaulted me for bringing a Service Animal into their store and then said I created a disturbance because I told them they were violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and I wanted to speak to the store manager. According to the Charlotte County Florida Sheriff's Office it is a serious crime to say you have a right under the Americans with Disabilities Act.The Justice Department refuses to enforce Veterans Rights since Obama took over, and it seems this whole country is against the disabled that provide the freedom they live under.I fell like I'm living in Russia.Everyone should contact the U.S. Department of Justice and ask WHY they aren't investigating this case with the First Responder, and WHY the Justice Department won't enforce the rights of the disabled, unless they are a minority. The Justice Department really seems to hate Disabled Veterans.

They should know that service dogs aren't like pet dogs, and that they have a job to do, and it's important that they have to stay with their owners. I blame Obama because he brought racism to the United States Department of Justice and Ordered them not to enforce Civil Rights Laws for Light Skinned People or for America's Disabled Veterans. The Justice Department was on trial before the United States Commission on Civil Rights and was found to be GUILTY of discrimination against Light Skinned People. I know, I contacted the Justice Department a dozen times because they are supposed to enforce ADA Disabled Rights and they said I had to be a minority to have my rights enforced. Laws should be EQUAL and not based on skin color. Obama is a racist and you know it.

    The big problem is that the VA will not give you are service dog or even help you find one. I'm 100% service connected Vietnam disabled veteran and I had to find my own service dog. I also have PTSD and my service dog is a 126 pound German Shepherd. Just a couple weeks ago during the hurricane here in Florida we went to a shelter ran by the red cross and the county and they tried to make me put my service dog in the kennel room in a cage even though they knew it was he was a service dog and I had papers from my VA nut doctor saying my service dog was to stay with me at all times. They tried saying people were scared of him so they couldn't put people in with us and they needed the space for humans. I just told them to bad he means more to me then them bitchie people and with them being the red cross they should know the damn law. Well for the next 2 days guess who stayed with me and my wife...my 4 legged buddy.

      I have ptsd and i can have a huge attack in the same room with people and they would never know, not every attack is a screaming crying freak out. he very well could have just been starting into the attack and the dog stopped it (like they are trained to do) i mean with service dogs for people with epilepsy the dog gets the person to lay down BEFORE they start the seizure, they are probably trained the same way to stop it before it gets too bad.

      The whole point of the service dog is preventative and coping, the dog was there to calm him before his agitation had a chance to becomes worse. Also PTSD is not always obvious some may react by getting agitated and fidgeting while others may shut down and dissociate while to onlookers they may not see much physical response. Sure he wasnt screaming or diving on the floor in a full on flashback but he could have potentially worked himself into a very uncomfortable state but his service animal brought him back to the present and is there as a grounding tool. I also have high hopes for this man, but to say he will "fully recover" well maybe you don;t understand what ptsd really means.. It's a lifelong struggle that never really goes away. I do not mean to be condescending, just some friendly advice that ptsd is seriously disabling and very misunderstood by the general public. Though i do not want to make assumptions about what you do or do not know perhaps you have personal experience with the subject, but it can affect different people differently. Yes full on ptsd attack would be quite visible luckily it didnt get that far.

    What about those people who get PTSD from work, losing a job? What about those people who are unemployed and struggling for work?

      LMleet06 ....I suffer that everyday because if I lose my first real job...my family will disown me and the only person I can count on my mom? She'll ignore me and send me to a group home despite me being 21.

      M Cutrone woah I was just saying what I go through, no need to attack me blindly without reading what I was responding to and really, name calling? You're really going to go that route without understanding people and what they have. Get off the internet, you're too young.

    Seven percent of returning WWII vets reported some level of disability related to their service. The number today is 47%. Our "war planners" must take into account that almost half of those deployed will try and claim some level of disability related to their service. You do 3 years, do not even need to leave the US and then you can milk this 3 years of service for extra money for THE REST of YOUR LIFE.
    If you do not feel up to the job and there will be deprivations involved with this job, you will suffer, you will at times regret your decision to enlist, do not take the job.Now even though you have been warned the gov. still has an obligation to take care of you. The gov. can't hide from this responsibility simply because they did not identify the fact you were not really cut out for this job.

      The actual point is. The military must be more selective in who they accept. Disability claims are much too high. If the person is never inducted then we save on that lifetime of benefits. Is it OK to say some people were accepted for military duty that were not cut out for the job?

      Dan R+ 7% of WW2 vets reported a disability because disabling wounds were much less survivable with WW2 medicine. That's not enough to bridge the 40% difference though.

      WTF is wrong with you?
      Hey here's an idea, why don't you fight to stop wars altogether rather than fighting to stop those who fought for your country getting cared for when they return home!

      If your question is to me. This can be a complex subject. I ask what responsibility does the soon to be trained warrior have, to make sure the jobs his "minders" task him with are, in just one word, moral? The warrior is offering his services for a fee, is he not?
      My entire thought process changes if the soon to be warrior is drafted, as refusing to accommodate a draft is something we have seen not go well.
      If you make a choice to make the military you work, rest assured you will suffer deprivations, possibly go hungry, without medical care, things could get shi***. Be aware of what it is you are saying you want to get involved with. Since our military is able to be even more selective in who they take I suggest a hard look into just why so many soldiers need life long support after an enlistment.
