I live 10 mins from Windsor and Eton. Eton Mess was made when basically a pavlova got smashed by mistake at Eton College, and they served it up in bowls, with the name "Eton Mess!" It is yummy though!
Wow! What an interesting history.
During a cricket match against Harrow School, apparently sat on by a golden retriever.
Dat Eton mess is nice tho
Hey John, i wanted to say that I'm preordering your book and buying one for my mom also! I love your channel and your pep gives me a pep in my step every time you post a video! You're so awesome and one of my favorites on RUclips!!! Thanks for being so helpful and wonderful!!!

My favourite YT chef making my favourite thing to eat in the whole world! It's Pure Heaven!
Anyone in the the UK looking for the perfect meringues - M&S, big one crunched up or small, they have a perfect lovely chewy centre.
Fun fact: I've always been told by Etonians that Eton Mess doesn't exist, it's actually Strawberry Mess! My British cookbooks tell me 1893 to answer your question. 🍓
UK sucks, go run after your Queen and her tea bags. Wanker. Now cherrios.
Hi John! At the Eton College website they say this dessert exists since 1893. It is served at the annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School. Interesting facts! Just by baking a simple dessert we’re learning about it’s history. Thank U 🙏
Greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹!
When I woke up today I didn't even feel like getting out of bed. Then I watched your tutorial and you are so funny and brighten my day now I feel like putting the strawberries in the refrigerator to good use. Thank you and God bless you and yours . Thank you for sharing and keep on caking 💜
I love how chill you are. I'm a very nervous person when it comes to cooking/baking. I'm not bad at it, it just makes me so stressed. I'm always scared I'll mess up. But your calmness makes the process feel so unworthy of this nervousness. Thank you.
Preppy K here to prevent palpitations.
There's a good reason this is a classic summer dessert! Essentially it's a Pavlova served in a glass - but easier to make because the little meringue kisses are easier to handle than a large meringue.
I absolutely love it.
I like winter deserts like yellow snow and Grandmas old fruitcake
@@blackleague212 I'll pass on the yellow snow, but I do love Grandma's fruit cake! LOL
I heard a story (I think Jamie Oliver told it in his "Naked Chef" series) that it was originally supposed to be Pavlova but that one of the students that was serving it dropped one and everything broke and smashed. They then just put it all in glasses and called it "Eton mess". I'll be very surprised if this story is true.
I followed your recipe and made this last weekend! It was such a hit for our friends! But the best part is, I had some left over macerated strawberries and meringue kisses so I decided to make this in milkshake form!!! So in my blender I put the strawberries, some meringue kisses, some heavy cream and some milk and blended them all together 😃 for the icing on the cake, I sprinkled some chia and flax seeds on top!!! Holy cow🤩🤩 It was sooooo satisfying to eat!! Comfort desert!!!!! ❤️❤️
My daughter would absolutely love this. I'm definitely giving it a try. Enjoy your channel so much. Thank you for all the beautiful recipes 🥰
thank god ive found this channel binge-watching since yesterday so so so satisfying

Hi John! 🤗 I absolutely love meringues!Your recipe is flawless, I agree with you about the super fine sugar in slowly additions. The cups look amazing, and the addition of orange peel and liquor to the strawberries is yummy! Thank you for sharing your awesome recipes John!
This looks so amazing. Strawberries are great and refreshing for summer.

I found your recipe for Eton Mess back when Bridgerton Season 2 dropped. A friend was coming over to binge watch with me so I made it for us to enjoy. I could have eaten the entire batch. It was incredible! Now, I need to try the jazzed up version.
Presentation. Presentation. Presentation. That's where you shine above all the others, John.
My favorite show too! Gilded Age 💕 thank you for this video! Beautiful
Ah my dad passed away in 2018 but I remember he used to make this when I was a kid... Used to love this. It's strawberry season so I decided to look this recipe up...
I've never heard of this dessert- looks SO good. Will definitely try it. Thanks a ton.
I heard this recipe mentioned on an episode of Outlander when Claire went back to Frank and was cooking …. At least it sounded like this name. I’m enjoying all videos from this channel and I just made another pumpkin cookie dough. His is the best and I’ve tried everyone else’s!!!! Thanks for your videos. I’m prediabetic so can’t always cook each recipe I watch but sure enjoy them anyway.

John you are my favorite chef! Ever! I am actually eating zucchini bread , that I made using your recipe, while I watch this video! Thank you so much for your channel, your cookbook, and your website!
This looks yummy 😋 John. I think when I make it I will add some fresh peaches to the strawberries 🍓 one of my favorite combinations. 😋
This looks amazing John! Strawberries and cream go really well together 😋😋😄
While visiting a friend in England we went to Elton to watch her nephew play in a cricket match, which was so fun. She told me the Eaton mess was around when her grandfather was a student which would have been in the 1920’s so it’s older then 1920. Her mother thought late 1800’s. It’s my go to dessert when I visit
Hi John, love your channel, thanks. Elton Mess reputedly was born the day when a kitchen assistant dropped a meringue while passing it to the cook who was going to fill it . The cook didn’t have time to start again, as so just crumbed the meringue, and mixed it with strawberries and cream, then added some extra cream. The students really loved it and it was included on the menu thereafter. Yum tiddly-umptious 😊
Really my mouth waters to think about a combo of creamy and crunchy. Thanks for your wonderful recipes. Love and greetings from Pakistan
oh, I really really love this recipe but I forgot how to do it exactly so thank you very much. I once had a friend who was a very good cook - the right word for cake- bakers? He showed me once how to make it and made some little changes about it, and if you don’t mind, I would just recommend try it just for once the way we did, it maybe matches your taste. The little changes were that we added between the layers and of course on the top a it all white chocolates cut into very small thin pieces, very very small pieces. I think it matches very good with the strawberries and the rest. And also we used one portion sour cream or crème fraîche and mixed it with 2 portions of whipped cream to make it more creamy, and between the layers always on top of the whipped cream and sour cream we added a bit of strawberry sauce which we further pressed very thoroughly to remove it from the little nuts ontop of the strawberries and other thick parts of the strawberries to make it as perfect as sauce can be, and by changing these little things I think its altogether changes the taste of it in a way that makes it a bit more delicious for me, and maybe others, too. And thank you for the tip with the orange peel and the orange liquor, I will try that next time I am serving eton mess… By the way, I have a question that you might be able to answer, and that’s where the name comes from, because I heard that this is written this way: eaten mess Instead of eton mess, Someone told me the story behind would be that someone has to serve a cake made of strawberries cream and typical round layers for cakes made of meringues? - I hope it is the right word - And that this person accidentally slipped and the cake fell onto the floor and broke into 1000 pieces and in despair because of the lack of another cake to replace, they put the pieces together filled it into glasses and served it as a different desert in a glass and to their surprise the people loved it. Do you know if the story can be true? Or does the name refer to something else? I would be very thankful for an answer.
Greetings
Mel
When I start feeling anxious for no reason I watch a John’s videos and am instantly calmed down. This dessert is a MUST!! Cannot wait to try this!!!

@@blackleague212 coffee is so delicious. I love the bustelo brand with heavy cream. And almond milk lattes. Maybe I should go decaf.
all the cakes you make are so perfect who agree with me

My husband does, too!
Fun fact: Japan has its strawberry season in the winter, from December to April. Luckily here in Hong Kong we have both Japanese and American strawberries, so we can have Eton mess all year round.
Eton mess is a traditional English dessert consisting of a mixture of strawberries or other berries, meringue, and whipped cream. First mentioned in print in 1893, it is commonly believed to originate from Eton College and is served at the annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School.Lancing mess (which uses bananas) is a similar dessert that is served throughout the year at Lancing College in West Sussex. (info from Wikipedia) 7 some from a Eton college site. Easy to make even better to eat & this one looks great to
I love Eton Mess. Meringue is always at home. Every time when so eggwhite are left, I love to make meringue. Thank you for showing you version of eton mess. 🌺🌻🌺
I also add some Custard to it when I am layering it.
Wow. Totally gonna try the recipe. It kinda reminds of when I f**ked up my pavlova and I just mashed up the meringue, whipped cream, and fruit together.
Yay! I also love The Gilded Age!
My Mom used to make the most awesome at Sham torte! For quite a lot of people it was always perfect.
Never heard of this dessert before!! Look forward to giving it a go. It’s recipes like this this why I love watching your show! You have really expanded my confidence level.
This is the perfect combination of the things I love!
That is the neatest Eton Mess I've seen. The first one I ever had didn't look appetizing but was SO darn good.
John, I love your recipes and the way yo explain. I have done many of them.
I also practice my English with your videos.
Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
Best wishes ☺️
It looks like a strawberry trifle. Especially with the addition of the liqueur. Delicious! I always made mine with a peach brandy, and homemade meringues instead of lady fingers.
I often make a Pavlova for family parties and sometimes one wont be as good as I like so I use it to make the Eton mess. Saves the day!
Wow, I have heard of this but never knew what it was or made it! Definitely will check it out so, colors of the red and white are so beautiful! 😍
Love all your videos and recipes!!!
In response to your question about Eaton Mess I found that it was created in 1893. First called "Eton Mess aux Fraises" as recorded by historian Arthur Beavan.
I think it would be so delicious 😋 thank you John
Good Morning John, this treat looks amazing!
This looks amazing. My kids are obsessed in watching your videos, we binged a bunch today haha. I love anything with strawberries :)
Never heard of this yummy looking dessert. I looked it up and apparently it was "first mentioned in print in 1893". I need to give this one a try.
Wow, he returned from Paris very quickly!
This is also wonderful with something crunchy...I use toasted quinoa...always have this aroungd as substitute for MS allergies
I really do need a copy of your book. Lord knows I'm always looking up your recipes for ideas when I want to bake something yummy. I just made your chocolate chip muffins for a brunch and they did not last long!
I love Elton mess, it’s such a quick and easy thing to make! Also in the uk we call it caster sugar instead of superfine (seen as it’s a British dessert, thought I’d mention) ❤️
And in Canada we call it “berry sugar” !
I absolutely adore your channel ❤️ would definitely watch TV again if you were on food network
I’ve heard of this dessert, but I didn’t know how simple it was. Think I’d like the classic version, like Brian.
Can't wait for the book. I pre-ordered too.😃 I agree about blending super-fine sugar. Whenever I need it, I throw regular sugar into my blender first. It makes the most ah-mazing 😉 fine sugar that stays especially light.
make some black food like pigs feet and collard greens and smoked turkey wings. HOw aBouT thAT????
Thanks another great recipe - you always manage to make it look doable - great job 👏 👏

I think my husband thought this was a UK public school practical joke.

0:30 My grandmother always said that the weather affects baking! I.E., don't make pie crust or noodles on a rainy day.

Hope Brian, the boys and your lovely mum are all doing great, you too of course! ….. X💕🇬🇧X
It's been awhile since I made this. I remember in cooking school we had a ton of strawberries we had to use up and a ton of whipped cream so we ended up using the egg whites to make the meringues and we use the yolk to make lemon curd and had that along with it and some cubed up pound cake, we had it set up so everybody could assemble how they wanted it along with the fact that it was hot and I made everything else so I didn't want to assemble all the desserts. Oh and something fun I discovered one year I can't remember what base recipe unfortunately but I had made meringues and when I added flavoring I used strawberry candy oil and I added some citric acid to it, they ended up tasting like Starburst but having a softer texture I maybe could have baked them longer but I had to get to an appointment and we all like them if I remember correctly they had a little bit of a chew so we all kind of actually dug it
Omg 😱 sounds heavenly.
One of my favourite desserts!🤗🍓🍓🍓
I love making meringue. It's like magic. I don't like eating it though. Way too sweet. I'll tuck this recipe in my back pocket for a party.

Hi John. The dessert started as a strawberry pavlova. It was dropped on to the table and smashed. That was the beginning of Eton mess😊
