    • @georgercop
      @georgercop 5 месяцев назад +13

      tbf Zaheer did exactly the same thing after escaping prison - he used bursts of airbending to slow his fall as he bounded down the mountain, so to say he did what Zaheer did is not wholly inaccurate =P

  • @MrTiggityTotz23

    I believe if they compare Aang's wind propelled "flying" to Zaheer's "detachment from his earthly tether" Aang is still using his airbending to push off and basically 'double jump.' Whereas if they were to show Zaheer, he would just innately be hovering without having to jump around like Aang was.

    • @georgercop
      @georgercop 5 месяцев назад +4

      Yeah there's a bit which people point to as "Aang flying" when he's shouting for Appa, when he's actually balancing on top of a tornado - if you're not watching in potato quality, you can see the snow whipping up around him to show that. It's not even a technique unique to the live action either - Tenzin does the same thing in Legend of Korra at least twice.
      I guess people mixing it up is a blend of the airbending in the live action not being as visible as in animation, and misunderstanding how Zaheer's weightless flight works as opposed to propelled flight

    • @andreas.4764
      @andreas.4764 5 месяцев назад +1

      I noticed he only rides air currents like that in places where there’s strong wind. The South Pole and the Southern Air Temple are both locations with strong wind (you can see it often in snow or dust whirling around).

      eh, could see them both liking some things, and not liking others. It's a bit of a mixed bag for the show, but I think they got more right than wrong, and overall delivered a pretty good package for the main plot and details. Especially because they probably had limited amount of episodes they could fit things into.

      I'd rate the show as a whole a 7/10. It's a "a quite good enough", but the dialogue between character just seems lackluster for me. Still happy they got two other seasons going, how they could improve to be as good as One Piece live action.

    • @ccorgom

      If they’re expecting a 1:1 adaptation and comparing everything to the animated, then I agree that they’re not gonna like it. If they accept this it’s based on the animation and not a 1:1 then they may end up liking it.

    I loved that they took the dark themes of the animated version, and embraced it fully. Now the audience that grew up with the series is old enough to have a non censored/toned down version (even though the animated series does tackle the themes, it’s not the same). And they truly make it clear from the start and showing us what happened with the air nomads.

I know casting of first live action movie was not true to source material but still it was pretty diverse unlike live action adaptations made by Japan for ex of Attack on titan and Fullmetal alchemist which are set in mostly European setting but they hardly had any in their live actions and those usually don't face that much backlash for it. Even in modern western adaptation of classics like The little mermaid and even Snow white they black & brownwashed main characters despite plenty backlash.. and othef endless examples, seems it's more acceptable one way around..

    • @LS-tk7hp
      @LS-tk7hp 5 месяцев назад +9

      you forgot forced... they really leaned on the original a lot and if you ask me it doesnt really work unless youve seen the OG, im not hating it it had good and bad moments but the best way i can describe this show is fanmade with a few exceptional actors (i.e. Daniel Dae Kim, with him you notice the more screentime he gets the more you can feel hes a different caliber as the other actors)
      or to summarize this Show = Tell dont Show, feels like they took the criticism of missing content to heart and tried to stuff as much in there as possible regardless of the quality of storytelling
      Spoilers:
      S2 is make or break at this point, besides the plots of each OG episode being implemented more weird than great but never bad, the main issue is obviously that they either forgot or didnt care that the journey aang does to the north pole is because he needs to learn waterbending, i mean they mentioned it and then never do it. at worst this show felt like a fan service checklist like spirit world check, hebei check, mentioning avatars check, etc without these things actually carrying the same significance as in the original, at best this show is actually a decent adaptation, i especially loved the first half of the pilot episode, and they did the S1 finale justice, costumes were great and most locations aswell except jets hideout like wtf did they just rent a climbing park? also while the costumes were great they often looked to clean.
      on a character bonding / emotional level this is going to lowball since it skips most of the journey due to the episode length/count, so we dont get to see the world as much, i definitely didnt feel like i was on one watching this because they were at like 4 locations and spend a long time at each (considering the total runtime of S1)
      im really worried now because for one the showrunner quit after the first season (or got fired idk, might be for the better who knows but speaks for the quality/reception of this) but since aang doesnt waterbend they still have to show him learning that in s2, if they skipped that id be willing to call it a bad adaptation i mean theres 3 books water earth fire in each he has to master each element so he can defeat the firelord... thats just the raw base of the show and missing that without offering something equal in return which could go even worse, is plain bad. they already showed some of s2 content in s1 but it doubt it will be enough to compensate.
      in the end i blame netflix for most of the downfalls because theyre probably the ones who set the episode length/count, which is why were left with this weird situation but you could also blame them for not using the time right/ having bad pacing
      i know you aint ask for all that but i just wanted to add my 2 cents

    Fun fact about Air Nomad Culture, as their names imply, they are nomadic, meaning the vast majority of them were always out traveling the world, so the Temples were really only home to the young Air Nomads still in training, and a council of elders who oversaw said training.
    What some of you might not know is that the Temples were segregated by gender, so the Eastern and Western Air Temples were inhabited exclusively by females, while the Northern and Southern Temples were inhabited exclusively by males.
    One interesting theory I heard a while ago suggests that a child is sent to the opposite Temple of the one their parent grew up in, so if an Air Nomad couple have a son, and his father was raised at the Northern Air Temple, the son is sent to the Southern Air Temple to be raised by monks, since they don't put focus on family.
    So this theory suggests that Aang's actual grandfather is living in the Southern Air Temple, even if neither are aware. And the theory is that Gyatso might actually be Aang's grandfather.

    Yeah Aang is not flying the way Zahir did. I the beginning he is doing long jumps and gliding down, when calling Appa he's creating air currents and that's keeping him floating. The glider let's him glide longer and fly, Zahir is literally flying without generating air currents or atleast not big collums to float on.

    I completely agree with Montana on this topic. I get that same people may be upset that the live action isn't as child like but at the same time this is a war. The only way you can make a show like the original with that same tone and energy is in cartoon animation style. I do not think a live action version with the same tone and energy would be good at all. So I was very happy to see them take a darker tone with the show.

    • @reksfoleur859
      @reksfoleur859 5 месяцев назад +4

      Well, first I think the animated show never needed a live action. Weirdly enough, the animated show was more mature that this show in the way it treated its characters and its themes.
      The Netflix show confused maturity with "more fights, more violent, more spectacles", but in ultimately, it failed on the emotional part too.
      There are some reviews which do a good job at explaining those things. I agreed because I felt exactly like that when trying to watch the show, it did not work for me at all. It was not bad, it was just less good in most areas than the original show.
      Now if people liked it, good for them :-).

    • @Jcb2db
      @Jcb2db 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@reksfoleur859 ok that's fair. I disagree almost on everything with you and as a film major I can make a valid argument against most of what you brought up. ESPECIALLY when talking about maturity and emotion. I won't do that though bc you showed you were very mature in handling my comment would so I respect it and find it unnecessary. But I personally like the live action. And just bc it may not have needed one doesn't mean this one is bad. The acting, cinematics, and story actually line up pretty well and are great. And I understand ppl not liking it bc of the original but if it was episode for episode like the original what is the point of that?? Somethings have to be different in order to make it stand out. If you don't like that oh well it doesn't make the show bad. That is my stance on it bc I personally think again as a film major it doesn't deserve the hate I've seen and it is actually a pretty good and solid remake.

    • @tambourinesmusicmachine
      @tambourinesmusicmachine 5 месяцев назад +3

      I disagree. The "darker" tone is far less mature than the show aimed at literal children. NATLA Aang is closer to his Book III incarnation, where he becomes far more determined and accepting of his role of the Avatar.
      They chose to skip all that growth we got from Aang in Book I and just skip to the end. So now Aang has a far more shallow arc than the original. Same with Sokka and Katara. They each suffer in the character department, but in different ways.
      I agree that the lighthearted nature of the original would feel at odds with a live-action adaptation, which is why I feel like this show didn't need an live-action adaptation. If you can't incorporate one of the main elements of the show you are adapting (i.e. Hope, Humor and Fun), then I feel like your adaptation is fundamentally miss the mark.

    I think in regeards to the "flying", it's really more like "gliding". But even then, you only see him do it for a short amount at a time. Perhaps the glider enables him to glide for longer, and gives him more control, especially mid air. It's not like he could maintain the altitude in the beginning, he was high up and gliding along the air currents down to the ground. You could see him push off and give himself momentum in that scene. And then once he was close to the ground, used airbending as a "cushion" to land smoothly. I too was bothered by that scene for a bit, in regards to it seeming like flying, but thinking about for a little while - came to view it like mentioned above. Also think that since Aang is a very skilled bender, perhaps he is one of not many that can glide for a bit without the help of a glider. Like a hard to attain ability in regards to the skill and time to master it

    I’m in the middle of the reaction and had to pause at 9:31 so I may just end up either deleting or editing my response if you end up saying this but I wanted to write it down before I forget: To me, the intro scene of Aang “flying” reminded me an awful lot of Rise of the Guardians! I don’t know if either of you’ve seen the movie but Jack didn’t exactly fly himself but the winds were carrying him. The way Aang was moving in the air, it just immediately made me think of that. So a… it wasn not flying-like.Zaheer but a bending-the-air-to-make-me-fly kind of thing. At least that’s how I perceived it.
    On the topic of the adaptation over all… I love some things, I didn’t like others. Overall I enjoyed it for what it was because I didn’t try to hold it to the original show’s standard. I think a lot of people either love it or don’t. The people I talked to seemed to enjoy it alright, while others not so much. So I’m curious to see your opinions on it! Gotta say, I’ve been following you since the ATLA reactions but I’ve been mostly just lurking and not commenting much. But it feels good to watch you guys again! And so happy for you guys being married now 😊

    Actually, and compared to what we saw in the cartoon, the effects of the comet were almost inexistant in these scenes. They were at the same level as the regular firebenders of the show. And Sozin? If you remember how was Ozai in the finale, it's really nothing. Azula already shown that firebenders could "fly" using fire like that so... I understand that they didn't want to make the firebenders too impressive in order to keep the fighting scened more balanced but I expected more from the comet honestly.
