    Pretty negligible difference for much more cost. Some of my favorite work uses the cheapest light set ups, even a friggin' desk lamp at times. It goes to show that understanding light is so much more important than expensive lighting equipment. Thanks for another great video man.

    Nice work G. The biggest difference I see is between the umbrella - plenty of spill on the background - versus the light dome with grid where you aren’t spilling nearly as much on the background. The reason one would probably want to choose the 120dII and light dome would be for narrative work where you want to create more dramatic lighting designs where you can light in layers very carefully - where spill creates problems.

    120d definitely looked way better, but crazy how much the green tint shows on you rosy boi.
    Light Dome Mini definitely a good choice for small space. TBH I switched to the Light Dome (full) mk 1 and have regretted it, as there's too many issues and no grid. Just finally got my Light Dome V2 in after 2 months of backorder, but maaan the 1st was a mistake.
    BUT I use that when I have a lot of space. With my desk 100% up against a wall, the c120d is literally impossible to use (can't even fit an umbrella) so I just finally got a Tri-8 for my main desk setup and am LOVING it.

      I see more green with the 120d. Green cancels red so red faces like his and mine should do better with that cast. I think you're saying the 120d has more green and I agree. Too much here when compared to the other source.

    • @romari2706

      I think it looks better because it is 1) mounted higher creating a more classic Rembrandt look rather than side lighting, 2) it is CLOSER to the talent creating a much larger light source - which is softer. If the LED light was mounted similarly higher and used a LARGER umbrella, it may also look the same but would be much easier to use on the desk.

      @gmolina 5 лет назад +11

      This would be a great comparison since the Godox is massively under the price of the 120D and way more versatile when you use the battery option and you can even get a battery to AC adapter for long shoots.

    I think the best soft light to use in a tight space is the FalconEyes SO-68TD. I use it for interviews because it is incredibly fast to set up and can be plugged in or use V-lock or Sony NP-F960 batteries. I also own a 120D with a light dome (which I love) but it does require a large space and c-stand to position correctly in most situations. Also for a tight space I love the Wescott LED flex mat. Paper thin yet beautiful light. But the 120d is the most versatile and modifiable light so I feel that it is the best value even though it was more expensive.

    I like the look of the 120D/lightdome a bit better. It also provided a much better catch light in your eyes. The one weakness of this video is you neglected to address the fact that their are cheaper alternatives to the 120D and lightdome available which can produce a very similar end result and cost less than either option you presented here. I still like this video, tho. And I wish I had a Tri8 even though I tend to rarely use LED panels these days.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +2

      I agree that the catch light was more pleasing on the 120d II. Regarding the cheaper options, it's not that I neglected them, but rather the thesis of the video though was to tackle the comment that if you're going to buy a $500 panel, you might as well buy the 120d. So, I wanted to address that directly.

  • @AdamKuzniar
    @AdamKuzniar 5 лет назад

    Good comparison here! I totally agree in your case scenario the led panel is a better choice. However I think the single source lights are much more versatile - you can make them as soft as a panel, but you can also shape the light in a way thats impossible with the panel.

  • @HeythereDavehere
    @HeythereDavehere 5 лет назад

    Great to see these side by side. Was there any difference in the color grading between shots? Did you set custom WB between shots? The 120d seemed to be slightly more green on your skin tone where the tri-8c was more magenta. As far as softness and light quality, I was surprised to not see more difference! Definitely not worth 2x the price to me. Any thought of trying the falcon eyes so-68td in your setup? It’s more compact, works on standard light stand, variable color temp, and less expensive than either of these options. I’d be curious to see the light quality in your setup.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +2

      Hey! Same grade. Both custom WB. However, the Tri-8 runs more magenta, so they include a green filter to offset that. But the 120d II is more green right out of the box. I could have fixed it while editing, but wanted to show their differences in colour.
      I've got the SO-28TD and I like it, but obviously not big enough for a key. I'd be interested in trying the 68 as well. Good idea!

    Hi Gerald, would just like to add. There are way cheaper alternative out there to get to the point of 120D setup. For example:
    1) Godox SL-60W + Selens 90cm parabolic + C-stand = approx USD 360. For more power you may upgrade to SL-100W / SL-150W.
    It's like profoto A1 (USD800) vs. Godox V1 (USD260) Honestly, there are alot cheaper light source that's similar to the 120D

      I agree with this for studio only.. the Godox SL60 is wired light.. but the 120d has the v mount adapter as I understand it. If u get the battery powered SL60 it cost around $350 I believe.. 120dii $745 but comes with very good light dome. SL60 does not, and it's not a V mount battery and the reviews for it are terrible.. I'd say u would spend a good $500 total on SL60 battery version to get it up to par with Aputure at that point I would honestly just save the extra $ and get the Aputure and be done with it.. but if it's for Studio only and u don't plan to do anything else. It would be the SL60 wired. I need a main light and I'm saving for the Aputure 120dii on a November Black Friday sale.. I want one great main Light I can shoot video and take photos with not just in a Studio but also out doors.

    Watching, I think a smaller, inherently soft panel a tad closer to cam would get you a nicer wrap. No need to go big dome for this shot. Add a very minor amount of fill with a small soft light (or cam centered tube led) if necessary. I just think your initial setup is too sidelit.
    Sounds excellent! What's the Mic?

    Another thing to consider is the convex vs concave shape of the light modifier and how that affects sound. Personally, when I use soft boxes behind my speakers, I find it much harder to focus on sonic details. In contrast, a convex shape equally scatters sound instead of focusing it. That means it should minimize comb filtering. I haven’t tried using an umbrella instead but maybe I should.

I have a small Aperture light that cost me around $90 AUD (I think that's close to Canadian Dollars) and yeah, it's a huge downgrade, but at %9 of the price the value is there. • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +1

      That's fair. Totally makes sense. Although, sometimes I wonder if we shouldn't be spending more money on lighting and less on other gear considering how big of an impact it makes. But like anything, there are diminishing returns the higher you go. I was impressed by the improvement from the 120d II though.

  • @TerriblyCinemaddict
    @TerriblyCinemaddict 5 лет назад

    3:07 The only differences I really see; Tri-8 cast a harder light or causes a harder shadow. It also seems to be pulling out the reds in your skin tone a little, but other than that, at a glance, I don't really see the difference. like you mentioned, the 120 def has more applications it can be used for and is more versatile, but for people wanting to make a home studio where the lights won't move much, just get the tri-8 and save the money.

    Been looking at the Aputure COB lights for a while with photo and video application in mind. Just wish they has a flash trigger function (like Rotolights do), so you don't have to have them on full all the time when using for photography, plus maybe get a little extra power with short flash bursts.. they have the bowens mount advantage so would be a killer feature in my book.

  • @romari2706
    @romari2706 5 лет назад

    The 120D light looks better because it is higher (a more standard Rembrant light) and is CLOSER causing the light to be more diffuse/soft. If you position the Tri-8 the same hight and distance, you will get the same look. The use of the umbrella is a great idea to soften the LED PANEL light. Some LED PANELS and LED Light boxes do come with grids. If you have little space and plan to keep the light fixed for one purpose, then the LED Panel is a great solution.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад

      The lights were pretty similar in angle, and the distance was the same. It has more to do with curvature and hotspots. The umbrella isn't evenly lit by the panel, it has a brighter section, which then rolls off down the curve of the umbrella. The light dome is even throughout most of the surface and that surface is flat. I think this plays a bigger factor. Because size of the source is paramount of softness, so the umbrella helps, but there's still a smaller, brighter spot. You can really see this in the catch light in my eye.

I'm using a 672W and AL-F7, both on your recommendation, but the 672w is a little far away from my seating position because I'm in a corner of a living room and the light stand in behind a sofa. Space is an issue and the 120D might not fit. I can't get a 60-inch umbrella to fit in that space so I'm using a 33-inch one. 60 inches is around 150cm, so you say the big diffuser is 1m x 1m - that *might* just work. I'm off to find the measuring tape!

    • @geraldundone

      I was using a 33" umbrella too. I agree that it's interesting to learn about other people's setups. You've got me interested to see how your lighting develops.

      I suppose. But you'd have to rig it up yourself because there's no socket for one on the 120d's yoke. And it might not fill up as nicely as you'd like.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад

      Yeah, I agree. The Tri-8 runs a little magenta. There's a green filter in the kit to reduce that, but I might have overcompensated for the filter in WB. I think I prefer the out-of-the-box colours on the 120d II. More accurate to my eye.

  • @pebmets
    @pebmets 5 лет назад +1

    Another great job. I do like the 120d ii where I could see better value with more flexibility, but on the side by side compare and you held a gun to my head, I kind of like the Tri-8c a little better. It may only be the slight difference in the angle you mentioned. To my eyes, (they are old), the Tri-8c looks just a tiny bit more natural or should I say the look I like, but not enough to make it a deal breaker. .I could definitely see the advantages of the 120d II and would not hesitate to go that route if the person who runs my finance department, (my wife), had no issues :-). I love the steady growth of your channel where I continue to see this community grow with quality comments and suggestions.

    actually, i like the result with the 120d much more. There is less red in your skin, the skin color overall is better. And because you had it higher, and perhapps because it's bigger or sitting with a different angle, the shadows are not as harsh.

      @@geraldundone Totally agree! I think it's a better light for talking head videos in general, but for your set-up, I would probably still go with a Tri-8.
      I've been trying to decide which of these two lights will be my next purchase. The Tri-8 is cheaper and being able to shift the color really have me leaning that way, but I also love having the control of a softbox with a grid. Eventually, I think I'll have a set of Tri-8s and a C-300.

    Tri-8c & umbrella looks better; more natural. the 120d II & light dome is over doing it a bit skin tones are washed out looking(maybe turned down a little it would be fine).
    Edit: I did not watch whole video before commenting. lol Does the Tri-8c add a bit of magenta or red ( or is it just the angle of the light)? With the Tri-8c I'm seeing redder cheeks and neutral skin tones, but the Aputure 120d I'm seeing paler skin and a slight yellow(hair almost looks blonde). I do like the light of the Aputure 120d with grid.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +1

      The Tri-8 does have a known magenta cast, yeah. It comes with a green filter in the kit to reduce it. By my eyes, the 120d II is more accurate out of the box. You can obviously tweak either to taste in post though.

    So I happened to trip upon the same lighting arrangement for my 3 point setup (which intend to use remotely in a theater space) namely 2 Intellytech L160s Kit for Side and Back and the Aputure D300 with that Big Dome for my Key Light. I figure anything else can be done with flags or practicals...
    The X factor with hill be the Background mostly painted sets which I intend to light with the theatre space’s tungstens and just Deal with the color temps... but I also bought a Green Screen Kit to play with...

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад

      If there's enough separation between the subject and background and if the tungstens don't contaminate the subject too much, the contrasting temperatures could actually add to the interest.

    • @TheGeoDaddy

      That’s my thinking, I want to keep the whole thing in the “Theatrical” look... but I do want to have neutral bright light for the actors and (gorgeous) costumes, wigs, makeup and props. The backdrops should shout “Make Believe!” and ill use flags to keep the lighting designs separated. Still waiting for ProRes RAW for my Z6 and Ninja V because reshooting with the actors & crew will get expensive!!!

    I feel like the 120d II with the Light Dome is a _significantly_ softer source with much smoother fall-off. I'd say it's considerably better. But that said, the number of commenters in here who say they see no difference means that your average viewer probably won't notice at all. Buuuut... I feel like if I had the space and all I needed was a key light for camera subjects, I might actually go for the Godox + Light Dome over an Aputure Tri-8.
