There's lots of cool vocal production to learn from in this track and the perspective we get when digging into Tim's unusual sounding grit and rasp is REALLY enlightening!
He's got this 'broken' and almost laid back angst that happens when he really gets into it. This is the hardest kind of vibe to get into when we're singing with distortion because we always think that distortion is associated with push and volume.
In this case, it's associated with abandon and, strangely, backing off a bit. Join me in this video to learn more!

Tim’s voice is very diverse and he has great vocal range!
As someone who has spent a considerable time attempting to nail Tim's distortion technique. I honestly laughed at you at first, but as the video went on I gained respect for your knowledge, as well as the balls it takes to attempt something like that for the first time on camera. And then you eventually nailed it halfway through! Big kudos. Great video.
Sidenote: To me Tim's particular sound has always been about singing clearly through the middle of your throat and squeezing your head to add distortion, as little sense as that makes.
Tim is a fucking LEGEND! His sound is so unique too.

Edit: Tim is also my biggest inspiration when it comes to singing, he´s the reason i got my ears adjusted to screaming vocals.

This is awesome, Chris. Tim was one of the main reasons I started singing. His unique style and great control, the ability to go in and out of multiple types of distortion at will is spectacular.
My band back in the day got the pleasure of opening up for rise against here in Az downstairs at the Nile theater (rip) … anyway Tim Has one of the most powerful unique vocals ever. And he’s GREAT live .. great video

Damn every one of these videos is so freakin awesome and insightful. These songs you do these isolated vocal videos for are all stuff I've heard a million times but the isolated breakdown always brings cool flavors I never noticed to the front and gives me a bigger appreciation for the production side of vocals

I'm always amazed at how much is going on with the vocal track that I just don't notice when its embedded in the full song.

You should do one of his newer songs now that he has a vocal coach and changed his singing a bit. I saw a video of "no where generation" I think it was and he was sticking his tongue out while singing and it would be very interesting to hear your take on that. Great video 👍
Wow thank you, one of my favourite bands 🙂. I’m surprised how much the tuning / vibrato has been messed with in places and that some of the harmonies sound like they were artificially created. I think it totally works though, just never noticed until I heard these isolated vocals.

Chris, you should take a look at Yannis Phillipakis from Foals vocals. Notably his performance of 'Daffodils' in Like a Version. His voice is OUT OF THIS WORLD in that performance.

I don't want to beg but I really really want to see you try something from Life on planet 9, lo pro or Ultraspank. A LOT of what I learned improperly before finding your channel was me trying to sound like Pete Murray, instead of learning his techniques and building on them.

My thought exactly. Tim couldn't keep his voice in shape on tour, probably because of what Chris said in the video: he just did it and didn't think about it. Nowadays live, he barely uses any grit. That's no coincidence.

@@andreaojetti4853 because what happened to Tim was exactly what happened to Matt Heafy from Trivium. they were literally screaming from their throats. Matt now has a proper technique (obviously doesn't sound so good) and Tim only screams on records, mostly.
@@1MarcoDavid exactly, I've been seeing some new live performances from Tim and he's getting better and better (while in the last tours with time he got worst) so I'm sure he will scream way more in the future. he's already doing it during concert using another technique

Hey Chris, I'm practicing my mixed voice and distortion with this song, it sounds good at the start, but I lose that voice quickly after maybe just 1 or 2 gos. Feels like my voice is injured and it won't push up to that note anymore. Do you have any videos on this?

Idk if you’ve done a video on this before - but the “h” section at the end made me think of it. I am constantly voice breaking when I am delivering words that start with H especially when experimenting in my mix voice. Do you have any videos or are interested in making any that talk about particular vowels/consonants that might be troublesome or require different approaches? I think that’d be an interesting video!
I've done a few videos on vowels. Check out my video on "Why You Can't Sing EE" And I've done other stuff on Tone control that will address exactly what you're talking about. Hey Chris, LOVE your videos! One question: Can one practice this kind of distortion (or screaming with your vocal break, like you showed with Spencer Sotelo) while doing straw phonation? That would be great because then I could practice this at home without my neighbors thinking that I'm getting murdered.
Straws are cool, but they work for lots of stuff because they are adding "external compression". (Airflow resistance) Straw phonation isn't great for practicing aggressive singing because it doesn't 'teach us to create that resistance in our own false cords/vocal tract.
Honestly I feel like his voice (like so many others with unique grit) is a lot due to years of touring. Not saying he couldn’t do it before - or that he didn’t sound like that before, but I’ve been noticing more and more how that almost hoarse, loosely broken up sound comes from people who have been touring for many years. Or had maybe just spent the last 4 hours recording vocals in the studio 😅 it’s hard to tell, and cool either way.
The point you're trying to grasp in the beginning with the "Seldom" - tim doesn't sing - he acts! He says it in character, while using his practiced talent, that's how he gets where it is. every song is deeply personal for him.
I so agree with this! Lots of amazing singers are more like musical actors for sure!

Really interesting… great voice but I wonder if some of that grit is due to melodyne or some other pitch correction. It sounds a bit robotic at times, especially in the verses. Thoughts?
I don't think the GRIT is... but I definitely hear some artifacts!
I'm a complete noob singing. I can sing some Avenged Sevenfold, 3 Doors Down and some Three Days Grace. Tried to sing Swing Life Away by Rise Against and I can't haha. I play it on guitar at the same time and I actually sing slightly better. But yeah... I'm gonna keep trying and experimenting
I don't know this band. Really like those harmonizes at 5:52. They remind me of production in 90s R&B stuff - MJ Dangerious era for example... and I've just checked out the full song and they get totally lost in the mix.
I dont think he's consciously doing it. Sounds like he's singing with emotion, and emphasizing certain words, applying that grit in just the right places. 🤘

In some of his newer live performances, it sounds like Tim has had vocal surgery and it sounds a little off, but he's always been a great singer.
Seems like Tim's mix has a sharp nasal resonance that sounds a lot like bitcrushing. Anyone have experience with this? My voice does this too and it drives me insane but maybe I just need to stop hyperfocusing lol
I think that makes him sound awesome. Just be yourself man, don't overthink.

Idk... Appreciate the breakdown but Rise Against always comes across as monotonic to me.... It doesn't have large vocal dynamic range... Just lots of grit singing...
I dont think Tim had any actual training before Nowhere Generation (I think he had to stop singing for a while because of this), but they have a lot of clean songs that isnt pure grit
