The Great Sphinx Was Saved Because This Pharaoh Had a Dream

  • My two worlds colliding? Yes please! The Great Sphinx of Giza falls victim to a lot of conspiracy theories like the Hall of Records and the Sphinx Erosion Theory...
    But have you heard about the Dream Stele?! It's one of the oldest recorded restoration projects and involves a dream, a prophecy, and maybe even a seizing of the throne of Egypt.
    Comment below whether you think Thutmose IV really had the dream, or it was a political move to justify his claim to the throne 🤔

    To me it's someone trying to empower themselves to legitimacy..
    At some point, in Egyptian culture there was a career where people paid you to have a dream on their behalf.
    So I know they were extremely superstitious and they saw dreams as a conduit of knowledge.
    "If you have a problem with my story, take it up with the god who promised me the throne after what I have already completed. The restoration."
    Seems clever to use fear, godly empowerment and showing respect to something that was already "old" in his time. What do princes do best but manipulate their "rightful" position in life?
    It's like Trump saying the reason he became the president is because God ordained it. To argue that is to argue with God. That's the point in making the statement.

    Maybe it was just a regular dream. People in the ancient world often saw dreams as times when they were in the realms of the gods or when gods communicated with them. If Tuthmose had such a dream, there is no reason for him to think it was anything other than divine. Alexander the Great supposedly built Alexandria after Homer came to him in a dream.

    You left out the family feud and the Biblical connection (?). Thutmoses IV wasn't the son of Amenhotep II and his Great Royal Wife, Merytre-Hatsheput, who also happened to be his mother. In fact, this wife was a minor wife of Thutmoses III who assumed the title after the first Great Royal Wife died.
    Thutmoses IV was the son of a lesser wife Tiaa. In ancient Egypt, the sons of the Great Royal Wife inherited, in this case another Amenhotep who died young. A son marrying his mom was odd enough, but this maybe a reaction to Hatshepsut, his grandmother who became Pharaoh. Thutmoses III defaced some of her monuments and to control the succession, wives were relegated to minor religous roles. In fact Thutmoses III was a son of a secondary queen and a grandson of Thutmose I whose father is not known, so the 18th dynasty is a history of two competing? families, which is reflected in the names, Amenhotep and Thutmoses.
    On the Biblical connection, it has been speculated that Amenhotep II was the pharaoh of the Exodus. He was born and raised in Memphis, not Thebes, was known for his many building projects in the north, his campaigned in Syria, his documented cruelty, mass deportations and contempt of non Egyptians. Thutmoses IV was not his only son.
    As for dreams, his great grandma, Hatshepsut dreamed that Amun was her father and proclaimed it on the walls of her funerary temple. Maybe he got the idea from her? With competitors for the throne, what better way for Thutmoses IV to stand out from the crowd?

  • @varyolla435

    Key word here is of course = _"restoration."_ So the Sphinx has undergone multiple restorations in its history. This could in part account for the "disparity of size" some try to argue. Look at old B&W photos of it from the 19th Century to see its Nemes eroded. In the 1920's engineers patched it up using concrete. In times past however if beginning to degrade around the edges then some recarving might have possibly taken place to "smooth out" its appearance prior to possible repainting as it originally once was.
    As an aside. The Sphinx is primarily eroding owing to = "efflorescence". Exposure of the porous limestone to moisture results in salt crystal formation. Think an asphalt road in winter. Moisture gets into cracks where it expands to break apart the surface of the road creating "potholes". Thus salt crystals formed in the limestone weaken the stone causing it to flake away.
    So condensation from heating/cooling of its stone structure can cause surface moisture to form. Yet the Giza plateau actually rests atop = the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System. There is groundwater below the Sphinx while the Nile is to the east of it. Why does an oil well shoot oil into the air when drilled??? Answer: the pressure beneath the ground > the pressure of the surrounding air. There is groundwater a mere ~4-5 meters beneath the Sphinx and pressure causes moisture to upwell through the porous limestone bedrock it is created from to the surface where evaporation----------> causes salt crystals -------> which denude the surface of the stone = causing it to flake away. Run your hand along the walls of the Sphinx pit and flakes of limestone will come off.
    Moral of the story: the sad irony is that when the Sphinx was uncovered = it eroded even faster as its entire surface area was exposed and subject to the environment. Blowing sand abrades its surface causing that weakened limestone to flake away over time not unlike "sandblasting". So while it still eroded during those centuries when it was mostly buried it was less - consistent with the relative hardness of the limestone layers making up the formation the Sphinx was carved from. This is why some parts are eroded more than others as some areas of it are harder than others.
    Consequently the Sphinx requires constant maintenance to slow the naturally occurring erosion which is consuming it. Also several years ago the Egyptian government per a USAID grant installed underground water pumps around the plateau to lower the water table and divert it away from the necropolis. Rising groundwater threatens a number of ancient sites in Egypt today. Enjoy your day folks. 🤔

    Another reason that Tuthmose IV may have had to use the gods to validate his right to reign is simply because the Tuthmosid line had no royal blood. Zero. Hatshepsut & her daughter were the last of the royal bloodline in that family. Her daughter probably predeceased her. (with no issue) Hatshepsut's father was a commoner. Her royal lineage derived from her mother. (Ahmose? From the previous dynasty... It's complicated...) Hatshepsut used the gods to legitimize her reign as a pharaoh in her own right only, because her bloodline was never in question.

  • @StitchGV
    @StitchGV 2 года назад

    That whole bloodline is just so delightfully fucked in the head, so yeah, he probably did actually have an epileptic spiritual vision, IF it wasn’t just a regular ‘ole vivid dream rooted in actual thoughts and feelings like we all have. 🤷🏼‍♀️ What spare doesn’t wish to be the heir? Who wouldn’t take one look at a giant ancient statue older than living memory buried in sand up to its neck and think about the satisfaction of digging it out? What person living in a VERY religious society doesn’t imagine that they have a personal relationship with their god(s)? It’s probably not much more complicated than that.

    There is still great reason to express divine right whether the accent to the throne was legit or not. That was part of the ritual. If his older brother was to take it, he would have some myth tying him to the Gods as well. They all had a myth or ritual connection to the Gods, Oriris, Horus, Atum, Amun, Aten, Isis etc. No doubt the priest would cook one up for the Pharaoh if he didn't come op with one himself.

    If an absence of evidence for the Kafran age of the sphinx (and the ignorance/dismissal of geological evidence) isn't unusual for archaeology, then wouldn't that make mystery and conjecture the norm?
    I have to admit, though, (being in Biology) that even in the sciences, old ideas commonly get preserved arbitrarily to the exclusion of new hypotheses and evidence. This has both benefits and pitfalls.
    But eventually, the old guard dies, and there's no one left who can remember why we were buying into those orthodox theories, to begin with, given that the current sum of evidence is against them. This is especially true in Evolutionary Biology, where the official definition of Evolution contradicts what any serious graduate researcher believes and studies (i.e. that non-genetic inheritance is an aspect of biological evolution).

    • @russellmillar7132
      @russellmillar7132 Год назад

      Old ideas not necessarily wrong just because old. "new" hypotheses not necessarily better/righter just because new.
      Funny that, you being in biology, don't point out that evolution simply means "change over time" , aside from any theory that may pertain to how that occurs. The theory of evolution by natural selection is what is studied, unless you are talking about graduate researchers in certain religious institutions.
      Non-genetic inheritance has been in the literature since 2012 (Bonduriansky), and likely known before that. There surely are some researchers that don't bother to review the literature in their own field but the idea that the entire field of evolutionary biology is clueless and lazy doesn't track to anything I've seen.
