  • I couldn't resist getting back out on the water for another crack at the influx of dorado in the local waters. I caught more of this tasty fish this second go around and now I gotta find room to store them in my extra freezer! Nice problem to have!

    Nice video. So if you want a better spinning reel get the peen slammer4 8500. Plenty of drag. I say that because I have one and it did well with Dorado. 8ftheavy . Graftec spinning rod works well.

      Thanks, D! Yeah that 15lb is fraught with smiles and cries haha. Finesse is the name of the game on that one.

    My wife has the same reel: Penn Battle III 8000. If I was going with light line, I would be using at least 20 pound test mono with a fluorocarbon top shot of 17 or 15 pound test depending on how tough the bite is.

    I noticed that the spinning reel your using isnt a live line one. Is it any harder using a regular spinning reel?
    Did you have troube closing the bail when the fish was taking line?

    • @californiasaltwaterfishing9212
      @californiasaltwaterfishing9212  2 года назад +1

      Good question! I have thought about getting a live liner setup but I have been using these traditional spinning reels for so long I don’t mind too much keeping the bail open until the fish takes the bait. Maybe I am just old school haha. I didn’t have any trouble closing the bail when needed but maybe I will try out a live line reel and see how well it works.
      How do you like using the live liner reels? Any that you would recommend for this type of fishing?

      I was curious more than anything but hey if it works y change it haha. I dont have a live line set up but a reel I've been looking at is the Penn spinfisher VI live liner I have heard its a good reel.

      Watching again and living vicariously through you since I didn't make it out a second time like you luckily did...landing 4 is great! Boats were booked and I was just lucky to squeak on as a standby...was stoked just going 2 for 3 (one spit hook) using 20 pound fluorocarbon and size 2 hooks! Dorado are addicting to catch!

      We were indeed luck to be a part of this unique experience having dorado in our backyard. Looks like the counts have dropped off and the dodo's went south. Hopefully I will run into them and some other awesome fish on my trips in the next couple of months down south. Thanks Todd for all your support and look forward to fishing with you sometime.

      Great tip about not yanking and trying to set the hook. I lost quite a few doing that.

      Happy to help! I can’t tell you how many times I saw someone yell “hookup” or “fresh one” while pulling back on the rod with full force only to see them immediately get a confused look when the fish wasn’t on the hook. This happens often with dorado, tuna, yellowtail and many other fish. Typically when fishing bait just winding down and hold the rod firmly will set the hook. Some may think differently but in my opinion a hard hook set just pulls the bait out of their mouth or rips the hook out of the jaw. Let the fish eat the bait, run a little, wind down and hold on. Tight lines and hope to see you out on the rail again my friend!

      Great fishing with you too! Thanks for reminding me about the yellow fin. It was cool to see a couple of those come up on the boat. You were absolutely killing it that day my friend. I hope to fish with you again sometime but until then keep those lines tight and have an awesome time. 😎
