This video gave me the confidence to replace the pump on my Perfecta. Thank you so much for this video! The only differences for me was that the thermal switch on my unit was hot glued into the pocket, so I used a hair dryer to loosen the switch, and I only detached the water intake tube, then unscrewed the pump leaving the top two tubes connected to the plastic connector at the top.
Excellent! So glad you took the plunge. I find that with each repair, mine goes for about another year but the repairs also get easier since you get more familiar with the internals.
Just to say thank you very much, I now have a working machine (and coffee), thanks to following your video. I had wasted a lot of time because the coffee machine error indicated that the grind was too fine and I took the grinder apart first, then I realised that I got the same error trying to get hot water and the pump was hardly making any noise. Just to note that in the UK at least if you Google for perfecta 5400 pump, it takes you to an Amazon page with exactly the right pump.
My water is in the tube up to the water pump, but nothing after that, no signs of water in the tubes above the pump. Is this an indicator that the pump is in need of replacement? thanks for your experience
Just to start, what makes you suspect the pump? Is there no water flowing out of the coffee ports? Have you tried the hot water outlet as well? Do you hear the pump running (a loud, vibrating sound)? To answer your question, unfortunately, you can't tell if the pump is bad just by looking for water in the connections.
I was getting grind to fine, and no water would come through. I’d put water spout in and only steam was coming out, not the usual water flow. I cleaned the diffuser and that didn’t work. The machine then worked the next day for no apparent reason and after 3 days, no water rinse at start up or when turning off, too fine grind appears , no water from the sour and no water running through machine. Only dry ground coffee in the grounds container.
@@marybethmielke3766 Yeah, it sounds like it could be the pump. If you have the same model as mine, the pump is only $25 at Amazon so I'd replace it and see if that fixes it. The 'ground too fine' error can be thrown if the water meter is bad (I have a different video on replacing that) but I don't think that is the problem here.
thanks for the video, just so happens I'm in the middle of changing pumps on a machine someone was throwing out. I'm having trouble pushing the clip that holds the small hose at the top (around 4:34 of your video), feels like I'm not pushing the hose far enough in. I'm guessing the clip should catch only the hose, behind the metal collar? thx
That happens to me all the time. A couple thoughts: 1) confirm there aren't o-rings both inside the connection and on the hose - there can only be one. Perhaps your new pump came with an o-ring in place and you have one on the hose too. 2) I now use a food-grade lubricant (Lubrifilm) when I reassembly these connections because they can be fussy. I think I've also just used vegetable oil in a pinch. If the hose goes in to the right depth, the clip will slide on very easily - no need to force it. Good luck!
@@ravraid thanks for the reply. I actually replaced the pump with a spare one I had from a Rancilio machine that I love! Problem is I'm not getting water past the pump int the system. I disconnected the outbound connections from the pump, and the pump does work. So the next thing is I looked at the valve connected to the outport of the pump. It has a spring inside with a small plunger and am wondering if the water pressure from the pump is not pushing the spring open. Checked DeLonghi parts website and that valve is not available. Any suggestions? thanks
@@mrx-in4xh Sorry for the delay. I think you are referring to one of the solenoid valves. I"ll bet I've replaced 5-6 of these in the 3 DeLonghi machines I've owned. I'm not sure what fails but I'd bet it is the coil for the solenoid. One way to check the solenoid is to use the diagnostic mode. I made this video for that: ruclips.net/video/CFbMPbuzFCo/видео.html If you activate EV1 or EV2 and you don't hear a loud clunk, the solenoid is bad.
@@ravraid can you tell me what the top part of the Pump does? It seems to connect the lines to the coffee brewing etc . I looked it up and it’s called the Valve Water Fitting Pump. that part I reused and connected to the new pump - is that something to clean or fix or replace that could make a difference ? I don’t know what I’m looking for and have checked out all your videos. I hope I’m not bothering you ! Thank you
The seller of the pump told me to add water to the pump before I use it but I don’t know how to do that? I didn’t see you add water to it ? I have a Delonghi Magnifica. Any thoughts on this ? Thanks
Priming the pump is a sensible thing to do but, no, I didn't do it! If your new pump doesn't have the valve on top (like mine) then you could pour water into the top there before screwing on the valve. I don't think pouring water into the bottom will help as it will just drain out. I will say that I've probably replaced 5-6 of these pumps over time and never primed them. I might've shortened their life a bit by that but I get reasonable use - years - out of them.
@@ravraid Thank you I should get the new pump in the mail tomorrow- I will be connecting the valve to it - Are you saying to add water into the top of the new pump before I connect it to the valve? Is it a simple thing to do? I don’t understand what you are saying about pouring water into the bottom? Sorry I am totally an amateur here. Thanks again
@@zee1272 Yes, I think pouring water into the top of the pump before screwing on the valve would be the only way to go. Again, I've never primed these pumps so, personally, I wouldn't sweat it if you can't get much water in there but it seems like a sensible thing to try and can't do any harm. Do make sure your Delonghi is unplugged as you work on it.
In the video, at time 1:03 there is a close up of the pump label so you can see the part number and google it - there are at least 3 different Perfecta model numbers and they might use different parts. You can also google your delonghi model number (e.g. ESAM5500B) along with "pump" and you'll get hits. I often go to ereplacementparts.com as they have a pretty extensive inventory.
Mine had water coming from the wand but nothing from brew. I was also thinking about blockage but the pump was also my problem. I was getting grinder was too fine error on screen. Thanks for your video.
Is there a trick to getting that little cotter pin back in - I am pushing and pushing the tube in trying to get the gold ring in but it is blocking the pin no matter how hard I push? What am I doing wrong? Thanks
It doesn't take any real force so if the tube doesn't go in far enough, something's amiss. A couple ideas: 1) make sure you don't have two o-rings. I've done this before where there was an o-ring inside the receptacle and one already on the tube 2) make sure to push the tube straight in or it can get hung up on the sides. 3) make sure there is no debris inside the receptacle. I've had mineral deposits there. You can use a toothpick, a metal pick, or even a stretched paper clip 4) make sure the tube end isn't distorted badly Use a good light and a magnifying glass to examine everything involved. Putting the hose clip back on should be easy so something's in the way.
@@ravraid your paper clip mineral deposit seemed to do the trick! You are a genius!!!! Pump is now working but nothing at all coming out of the coffee spouts ! The steamer side is working though. Do you by any chance know what my next move is? - Thank you Thank you
@@zee1272 Good, glad you got it back together. If you are getting steam out from the hot water spout, that indicates that the pump is working. Are you getting any error messages on the display?
