  • Is your machine no longer providing any water, or pressure? Don't throw it away! You can surely fix it! In this video, I troubleshoot the problem of our Delonghi ECAM coffee machine, which has already made 25,000 coffees. I overhaul the pump, switch out a calcified hose from the thermoblock to the brew group, and descale the machine to make it work like new again!
    NOTE: these troubleshooting steps and overhauling can be done on not just this Delonghi ECAM 23.420, but nearly all Delonghi coffee machines, and machines from other manufacturers for that matter. Just apply the troubleshooting process.

    stumbled upon your video while searching for some information about hacking a super automatic machine. without measuring mines outlet pressure i can tell another huge factor affecting the espresso aroma, bitterness and oil content is whether the internally used portafilter ise a double layered or a single layered one.
    i would be more than delighted if you could also look for a way to hack the filter inside and if it could be modified accordingly. i will do so in the upcoming months and leave feedback here, took a note of this video. cheers.

    Mine is an ECAM 22.110. The steamer didn't foam right for a few days, and then finally gave up. Barely any steam coming out. Only a few drops, when I turn it w/o steam. When I do a rinse, it spews a few drops from the main nozzles, but that's it. Just keeps going and going for a VERY long time. (I have had air bubble issues and other hurdles during all this, but they seem to be solved.) I took the pump apart, and it looks fine. Sounds fine in test mode. When I disconnect the skinny hose just after the pump and turn it on, water shoots out (as in your trial). I cleaned both tiny hoses, you had issues with. They weren't clogged, and it made no difference. Someone did a video with HUGE amounts of scale in the heater, but when they did that "pump trial", scaley water came spewing out of their heater. Mine only leaked water, so definitely not built up like theirs was. Took apart the flowmeter. Nothing to see. I'm at a loss. I don't mind ordering parts, but I have no idea where the problem is. No bubbles in the watertank. Any ideas, please? Thanks in advance! 🙏

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  7 месяцев назад

      Well it still sounds like you have constricted water flow somewhere. I'd localize the problem by going downstream of the pump, and seeing where the water stops. That's how I found the calcified hose in this model. Cheers!

    Great video, I have this coffee machine with a similar fault, I’ve thoroughly cleaned it inside it and out. I can get hot water in the spout and the rinse cycle works on both spouts by as soon as I try making a coffee, it’s trying and trying to push coffee through and it’s just dribbling in. I’ve had the infused apart and cleaning it all day including that little sprink loaded pin on the piston but to free it up but still no luck 😢

    Just to clarify, I will add that the blue electric component on one of the electric cables that supplies electricity to the pump, stuck on the side of the pump near its connectors, is not a capacitor but a thermal fuse. Just from the series connection to the pump coil alone, it cannot be a capacitor. The entire current would have to go through it to the pump, and the capacitor has a very small capacity for that. Translated through google translator, so I hope it's understandable. Thanks for the video. I remain with regards and wish you all the best.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for that input. At first glance it looked like a capacitor, and I do not know where the lead goes away from the pump. But yes, a thermal fuse would make sense. They also make them for the thermoblocks themselves, but they look different. Cheers!

    had a similar problem BUT could not get a new hose during covid... since it was all taken apart you might have proactively replaced the heater too - only a matter of time with so much scale. btw if it corrodes and starts leaking, you can plug / reinforce the problem areas with steel weld epoxy - I had to do it since there were absolutely no parts available at the time

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Год назад

      Hmm, well you have to backtrack where the water stops flowing. If it flows out of the pump, then maybe the valve is the culprit. If not the valve, then maybe a hose yet. And so on. Try to localize the issue.

  • @mr.mentos9433
    @mr.mentos9433 Год назад

    Thumbs up video. I have similar symptoms but the water comes out fine from the steam pipe. Could the problem be the infuser? I would clean the infuser and the first coffee after that is fine (although flow doesn't seem great), but not the second time. I can see the coffee powder in the tray instead.

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Год назад

      If I remember right, the water goes from the heater to the valve that switches between hot water and brewing first, then goes further to the brew unit. Perhaps there is some congestion there between the valve and brew unit. You will have to do a little troubleshooting to be sure. Good luck!

  • @chrisfairhurst5576

    Sorted problem below! Discovered best to remove rubber seal from connector, fit onto end of hp tube THEN push tube into joint. It goes further in making replacing the clip a doddle. Everything back together and switch on. New pump works great but water spraying about inside! Assumed it was the recently redone joints, but NO it came from another untouched hp joint. Discovered the metal clip had broken on one side, and water was dribbling out of the joint. No wonder there was no crema on my test coffee! Replaced missing clip from a strong paperclip, may have to do it again if I can't source proper replacements.

That line you connected to the second white check valve I took that apart from the top portion and ran the clean cycle and I got water coming out of it at good pressure. The line actually dispensing coffee I got new with the new main Cylinder valve. I’m getting steam and water out of hot water spout. What exactly does that hose do that’s coming out of the first white check valve ? I don’t see anything flowing out of that one but I’m not sure if it’s supposed to? I also tried changing the diffuser kit. What are the chances it’s the first white check valve?

    Was told that this valve (by the way what’s that called?) makes this machine super quiet, not sure how true that claim is, and not sure that could be useful for our machine other than this Delonghi?

    Hi - I replaced my pump on the Delonghi Magnifica because it was not delivering water anywhere - the steamer now works but the coffee part is not delivering any liquid - any suggestions ? - I’m an amateur but I’m willing to try ! If so do you know where I can get the parts and directions in the U.S. Thank you

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner

      Hi! My first guess would be the lines - they may be clogged with calcium. How often do you descale? You might need to troubleshoot up the line from the pump, to see where the bottleneck is. Cheers! Oh and spare parts in the USA I am not sure yet. Anyone know?

    Thanks for the video and the breakdown. I have a machine with the same guts but it is the dynamica. I am getting an error of flashing water tank, error light, and steam. Instructions say to turn steam knob to steam but when I do nothing happens. The pump doesn’t run. If I unplug the hose after the valve (like you did in the video) the pump will run no problem. Essentially there is no back pressure at that moment. When I plug that hose back into the heating block the pump won’t run even for a second and the error pops up again. It is like there is a pressure sensor somewhere being tripped. I have no scale in the machine. Any ideas? Thanks.

      @TomsCoffeeCorner  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry, but it's hard to diagnose without seeing the machine. Is it still under warranty that you could return it? If it's not reacting to the steam valve, then it might be that the reed switch is burnt out.

    Hi Tom, I am having real difficulties pushing the narrow high pressure pipes into the joint above the new pump enough to push in the spring clip. It fits over the pipe and holds in the metal ferule near the end of the pipe, right? I then lost the clip somewhere in the machine! I might have to use some wire instead if I can't find the original or buy a spare.

However, the comercial vinegar, or acetic acid is not good for the gaskets and the little ball in the pump, because it deforms them, that leading to leaks and malfunctioning.

      Hi there! Alright, so it's trying to draw water, but it cannot. It sounds to me like it's trying to draw water from an empty tank, but that's not the case. I would try removing the tank, and pushing the spring in on the bottom, to make sure water comes out. Then, you will have to see if water makes it from the tank, to the water counting wheel, and to the pump. Even if that's the case, you will need to make sure water flows from the pump to the thermoblock. Sometimes, an air pocket forms somewhere in the lines...you would have to locate the air pocket, and prime that line with a turkey baster or syringe.
      Has your machine been turned off for a long time? Hope this helps.

      Tom, thank you for this troubleshooting guidance! I so much appreciate it. Funny you should ask if the machine has been turned off for a while…yes, it has, about three years. Water is definitely able to come out of the tank…I pushed the spring and that works. Can you clarify where the water counting wheel is located or what it looks like? .. I’m going to get right on these other steps… thanks so much for the guidance. Fingers crossed!
      (Sorry for this “silly” question.. When you say prime the pump with a turkey baster or syringe do you mean fill the syringe/baster with water and then flush it through the hose with one end of the hose still attached? :-) )

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Год назад +1

      @@dmmc2475 If it was turned off for so long, then likely an air pocket formed. You need to find that air pocket, and prime that tube, by removing it and shooting water up there. It's kind of a pain. You also have to be really careful, since you are working with an electrical device, water, and pressure.
      Honestly, priming a water circuit is more of an advanced thing, that maybe a repair shop should do, if you are unsure of how to proceed. Cheers! Tom
