Emu's All Live Pink Windmill Show S2E6 (1985) - FULL EPISODE
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 май 2012
- This episode has just about everything I associate with Rod Hull and Emu in it: Croc and Redford are united for their first series together, there's the Spin Quiz, Grotbags's Grotto, the Pink Windmill Post Office, a section where they try to "twin" schools from opposite sides of the world, Boggle's Kingdom, and of course plenty of high-energy dancing.
Original air date seems to be Friday, 17th May, 1985 - though even I find it very difficult to believe that the Pink Windmill Kids performed Dancing in the Street off their own bats, only for it to chart a few weeks later. What an enormous coincidence that David Bowie and Mick Jagger would record their charity version within a month or so! (Or is it? Perhaps this was their inspiration...) Clues that point to this date are Rod making reference to a football match at Wembley - the FA Cup Final was the next day - and the subsequent episode featuring a reference to an upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, which fits the end of May perfectly.
The other song, by the way, is Rod singing the title track from Danny Kaye's film The Five Pennies. Also, were you taught by Mrs Donohue (not sure of the spelling, I'm afraid) at Hatten School, somewhere in the UK, or perhaps went to Cleveland Street High School, from Alexandra in the "outlying suburbs of Sydney", in the mid-80s? If so, there are probably some nice memories for you from around 12:25.
(Please remember that this is an old VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.) Развлечения
1:20 it must be so cool seeing them preform in person, i wouldnt mind to be part of that crowd.
Spencer's hair is fucking epic
Very epic. The best hair for the best Pink Windmill Kids
@@randomdude8790 I wholeheartedly agree ✨✨✨
Haha, the look on that poor lads face when the girl sits down next to him with her splendid new Atari. He's definitely pondering how feasible the suggestion of a swap might be. No chance sonny, lol.
Ha! Poor chap. I think he's sizing up the chances of a swift headbutt and legging it out of the grotto, personally. ;-)
And when the next one gets a TV.
Dont ask me but did anyone else cry when Rod sang that song about the penny at the end oh my word such a beautiful song.
It was originally sung by Danny Kaye in the film The 5 Pennies:

Imagine having the luck of being chosen out of thousands of kids, answering the phone and getting a question correctly only to win a £5 football.....
This episode feels like the crew and cast suddenly went up a notch confidence wise. Rod gets through both spin quiz segements with not only no visible nerves for once, but also relaxed enouigh for a spontaneous riff in each case that was something other than either bemoaning never getting through to anyone or gentlly mocking any of the windmill kids for misspeaking a line in that segment (and the brilliant, if probably slightly lost on the kids, 'Uganda' riff in the first quiz segment at least tickled the camera crew judging by the suspiciously deep-voiced laughter) . The kids in the Spin Quiz segment have also stopped beginning every line with 'and' ("tell us what the star prize is..." , ",,,and you could win a BMX bike!"), which makes those segments flow more naturally too. And in the Pink Windmill Post Office there is some great banter which, for once, stops short of Debbie (or should that be Deborah) actually beating Joe up (I can;t decide if they actually directed her to do that in previous episodes or if she was over-enthusiastically improvising). I also love that they did something different with the 'somebody at the door' segment, and actually allowed the windmill characters to catch on to the fact that it's pretty likely to be Grotbags and therefore probably best to not answer the door. Just need to iron out the School twinning bit now, which to be fair was running smoothly in this episode until a post spin quiz Rod managed to inject a small amount of nerves into procedings and send the Windmill girl somewhat off kilter, but still more than able to recover.
They got the tone of the show absolutely perfect - not patronising, not unwholesome, just good, honest, clean fun. And great prizes. :-)
love what the hell am i holding look (5.05) ' you could a fab time with this..(awkward pause) decepticon' followed by Rod saying ' A what?' ...
the wonderful kelly 24.33 lol glad these are on here now happy days
and classic times
Kelly is one of my favs 👍🏼
Loved watching EMU as a kid. even had an emu puppet too wish I still had it use to take my emu to church with me to the annoyance of the vicar lol them were the days
what a wonderful programme, goes to show how kids TV has just so totally changed from these days of innocence, and what genuis. Rod Hull & Carol Lee Scott were. Wonder what all those stage school kids are doing now!
Some of them where on a children in need special a few years back. The vid is on Y. Tube
Kids these days don't really get as excited about bikes as we did at that age, do they? I remember being dead chuffed when I got my barebones bottom-of-the-range Raleigh!
You're welcome! It's become my mission to bring Rod and Emu back to the masses. Glad you're enjoying them. :-)
(Nice channel you've got, too, by the way...)
I've just realised - I had one of those B&W tellys lol, used it with my Commodore 16 ;D. This was proper kids telly. It was fab. Thanks for uploading.
I'm amazed at how many expressions he could get out of Emu, essentially having only the beak to work with.
I too am amazed at how well these still stand up today. Good, fun, wholesome entertainment - I wonder what the current generation of kids would make of them.
You're welcome! I keep spotting board games that I used to own in these episodes that I'd forgotten even existed. :-)
From Spencer's umimpressed look while holding that Decepticon to the Chinese visitors in Boggle's Kingdom, to ahem, "armorial bearings" and bends as something "you get when you go deep sea diving" (courtesy of Debbie and Joe's banter), this one is really amusing. Also, what was the word Joe was saying when he said after mentioning chevron and quartering, and before bends? Something that sounds like "excarsian"...
Excussion, perhaps? I'm not the expert Joe is. ;-)
I might as well ask Joe on his twitter about that soon... Hopefully he'll remember
That would be 'escutcheon'
Thanks for that, Tim! Not being so familiar with coat of arms insignia, this really got me confused but you finally found the very term :)))
Why did Spencer's hair change?
OMG, I remember watching that particular Grotbags quiz where that kid won the orange 🍊 peel...at least it matched his red hair! I'm still looking for the one where a kid won a TV...
Why would you have to choose whether to laugh or cry? In those days loads of kids had small b/w TV's in their bedrooms - colour was meant for the whole family in their living rooms. LORD knows there were many pre-teen boys who watched The Young Ones on low volume 📣 in their rooms whilst pretending to be asleep...
Well, yes, but that black and white TV was won in 1987 - and on the very same episode the star prize in the Bargain Basement was a personal CD player. Hard to believe that B&W and CDs overlapped like that. They seem like they were decades apart...
Nah, the one I watched was 1984/1985 - I wasn't in the UK 1987
I think Sooty and Emu were my favourites in the mid-to-late-80s. I recently watched an episode of Button Moon during that CITV 30th anniversary, and couldn't believe just how surreal it was! Loved it, of course. :-)
Spencer is not thrilled about the Decepticon 5:04 Lmao
I remember seeing this episode on tv when I was a kid.
How unimpressed does Spencer look with that Decepticon at 5.05? Haha!
Never mind that, what's happened to his hair?! lol
Ha - not sure, but I had a big crush on him at the time nonetheless!
Haha I always wanted to be Spencer! He's the most underrated out of the lot I think, especially dance wise
Matgo Styles shame he wasn't in the reunion video, although he did take part in the Vice interview - did you read it?
What a rod Hull up to these days?
30:16 my favorite post office moment 😂
Debbie is so iconic 😂
5:06 Spencer notices a Made in China sticker on the Decepticon
10:45 when you mess up the ratio and make your drink 70% vodka and 30% coke instead of the other way around
Rods talent never got the respect he deserved. He was a brilliant entertainer and was good with kids. And I think he could have gone on to do other things if he was given the chance.
I used to watch this when I was little.
15:20 I love the part when Emma tells everyone to shush 🤣
god yeah a new bike was a serious gift ,,,second hand bikes was what we got wasnt it !!!! i never even got the raleigh i got a german bmx made by kalkoffe that looked just like the raleigh i wanted ,,,things have changed a lot and this show takes me slap bang into my childhood , i was 11 when this was on and i wish i could go back back !!!
At this point I'm just here for Spencer
thats bmx looks like a raleigh ,,,what a dream bike when we was kids !!!
I think the reason Spencer looks less than thrilled with the decepticon is that it's one of the bad guys in the series.
It would be great to know where's these people are now.
I know this is an old comment, but I hope this video from 2017 can answer your question
and maybe brighten up your day like it did mine :)
/watch?v=0zOjFuM9W6Q
Ah ha ha! I actually remember this episode when Rod took the piss out of that kid's accent! :D
awww how cool is this
Ha ha, Rod just mentioned Boggle's Radio...I'd pay big money to watch that episode; Boggle and Odd Job John did a broadcast from their castle using cones, and Hortensia had to ruin everything.
I'm still holding on to the thin hope that all this recent upsurge of interest will lead to more if not all of the episodes being found. I'm especially keen to find this 1985 series!
And eventually, you DID find it! 😊
I wonder who got the BMX bike?
Good point. I have the very next episode, too (which I'll upload soon) and Rod makes reference to an impending Bank Holiday weekend. Monday 27th May was a Bank Holiday in 1985, meaning that that episode could have been broadcast on Friday 24th, making this one Friday 17th - the day before the Cup Final.
It all makes perfect sense apart from the fact that Bowie and Jagger didn't record their cover of Dancing in the Street until June 1985. Perhaps Emu is what inspired their choice of song...?!
I didn't even know Button Moon had a live show! Was the Sooty one you saw where they had a large section swimming "underwater", and then a Battle of the Drums? That's the live show I went to see, and it still sticks in my mind today. :-)
The piece of music heard at the end of each episode of Boggle's Kingdom is The Devil's Gallop from Dick Barton Special Agent.
+TheMinder74
It's a Raleigh Burner. I thought it was a Night Burner at first but that had red rims.
These shows are like time capsules, aren't they? Perfect snapshots of when they were made. :-)
I've got another episode (which I haven't uploaded yet) where the star prize is a bike with a built-in speedometer/mileometer/calorie calculator etc. Sort of like you get on an exercise bike now, but on an actual kids' bike. It looks positively space age!
Before E. Bikes as well .
A football? I'll bet he wanted Soundwave 😉
The "Eurovision *Pong* Contest" reference may also be a clue - the 1985 real-life song contest took place on 4th May. The FA Cup date was 18th May.
The Bowie/Jagger version of "Dancing in the Street" was first shown during Live Aid, but wasn't released as a single until September.
I think that's the one - all angular pieces of white plastic where the frame should be, with a load of buttons and some sort of digital readout in front of the seat. The most hi-tech thing about my bike was a grip for a water bottle!
I'll definitely upload the episode as soon as I can. :-)
I think the main reason I'm convinced Croc wasn't is the lengths they went to to let us know that Redford was! From the first moment he appeared, he was complaining about having a limp arm, saying how much he loved pink, picking flowers, declaring his admiration for Boy George... all very stereotypical, but there was never any of that from Croc.
I could be wrong, though.
omg the two boys lol 1:03
34:04 - deal or no deal
I don't know, but if I had my way, it would be the centrepiece of a museum, right next to Rod's pink suit, Grotbags's cloak, hat and bazazzer, and the Croc costume. :-)
The last few episodes I’ve noticed Rod mentions a roadshow involving everyone at the Pink Windmill. At 24:35 he mentions that the whole gang would be there. I wonder if anyone has footage or photos of those shows? Also, if the PWK were involved in these shows it seems their weekends would be pretty busy. Pretty curious about these
I think they basically had a stage show that they took to theatres, and then in the summer they had a residency at a holiday camp. The only footage anyone's been able to find of it is from someone's silent home movie: ruclips.net/video/bjzJMLRLnss/видео.html
Some of the Kids were older ones who had already left (but some were then-current), and I believe Catrina acted as stage manager or something. It's difficult to piece together.
I think the older PWK's were at every date on the roadshow but the current bunch only went to a select few of them.
The best thing to do is ask on their facebook page. facebook.com/pinkwindmillkids
I only wish I had some of Toby's series! Unfortunately I don't - though it's a bit surprising that no-one else seems to, either...
VideotapeFTW, who is the lady at 0:21? I only saw her once - during a Christmas-themed song which was shown at the end of, I think, Series 1; from what I remember, they used to show old songs from Emu's World at the end of each episode, and this one was chosen because apparently it was one of Emu's favourites. I know she's part of Boggle's Kingdom, but surely that's not Hortensia, is it?
Yes, that's Hortensia all right. I think the clip comes from the 1983 Christmas special, which was the very first appearance of Boggle's Kingdom and everyone looked a bit different. But definitely Susan Maughan. :-)
4:11 Look carefully, Rod made it spin cause he pulled it
You wouldn't get away with that Chinese stereotype today
That's true, but stereotypes were a lot more common back in the 80s than they are now. It looks worse nowadays than it was ever meant to - it certainly wasn't intended to be nasty or insulting.
in those days, kids were scared of Grotbags, look at the control she has when she walks into that crowd - thesedays they are too wrapped up in cotton wool and talked down to - those prizes she had did make me laugh though - a black & white TV! ha,bless.
5:08 his face😂😂
please up load it ,, btw that bike sounds like the white plastic bmx that came out years ago,, it looked like a space age bike with plastic panels !!! am i right ?
3:19 I don’t know which band is better Joe or Debbie?
Well, Croc did have rather lovely lashes!
Can you please help??
I am looking for the episode where Rod gets one of the female dancers out of the line up as she is shortly leaving for Australia - it's the only bit I remember of this show
Paul Brouwer Hmm... Someone else has uploaded this clip, but there's no mention of Australia:
ruclips.net/video/wPHoSWh31D8/видео.html
I wonder whether you're remembering the final episode of the 1984 series, which I'm afraid I haven't managed to find yet. I know that Catrina (Rod's stepdaughter) was born in Australia and actually sent some reports from there in later series, so that would make perfect sense. Sorry I can't help, but I'll keep an eye out. :-)
I wish I could remember the girls name - I have a feeling that it was Amy but this was 25-30 years ago so I could be mistaken - I had a bit of a thing for her way back when and was really upset when it was announced that she was leaving.
Just wanted to see what she looked like lol
am going to have to go through all these episodes to check - thanks for uploading :-)
Paul Brouwer You're very welcome! I don't remember a Pink Windmill Kid called Amy, I'm afraid. Sarah, Lorraine and Catrina (often just called Trina) are the girls from 1984 that didn't come back for the 1985 series; Alex and Emma are the girls from 1985 that didn't come back for 1986. That clip I linked to above shows them saying goodbye to Emma at the end of the 1985 series, so if it's not that that you're remembering, it pretty much has to be 1984 (it's definitely not the last episodes of any of the 1987, 1988 or 1989 series). Hopefully a recording of the episode in question will show up one day...
Was it the one where Emma was leaving? I think they said she was going to the "outside world", not Australia. I remember it from the time, but have seen it on here too, and can probably work out which episode it was...
Thats Catriona youre talking about here thats Rods daughter in real life. She was one of the female dancers and left to go back to Australia where she still lives.
Poor Mark the other 2 kids got something good and he got a tshirt ☹️
05:50 I like how Rod pronounced the word 'Belfast' as 'Bell-Fast'! The kid on the other end of the phone had a nice accent, though.
Wow! I never got to see the stage show as they never came close enough to where I lived. (Sooty did, though, so I got to see that one at least...) Was the one you went to any good?
By the way, Rod mentions being on stage in Southend right at the end of this clip:
/wPHoSWh31D8?t=2m19s
That was July 1985 - could be the one you went to. :-)
I'm not sure how to send a private message on here but I have lots of videos of Emu's Pink Windmill Show, Emu's Wide World, Emu's World (1988 series) and EMU TV. I'd be willing to share on here but new to this kind of thing so would need some help with it!!!
Poor croc always getting hit so much he is a nervous wreck
Upload Emu with Toby Hull in it
I saw a Michael McIntyre where he joked about people saying their addresses/phone numbers when they respond. We have found that kid.
Answering the phone by stating your number used to be really common for some reason - it's how I was first taught. Somewhere along the line it went out of fashion...
I wonder why it did...
Which also reminds me how TV used to broadcast full contact details of people writing in. Points Of View, Jim'll... well, all sorts of programmes where letters would be read out.
"This letter from John Burrows, 29 Cheatle Drive, Nottingham NG11 47Q.".
It put me off writing in to Kids' shows, even when I was young I found that unnerving.
I can definitely see why that would be pretty unnerving. Fortunately this show just says Full name, age and place.
+97channel Yeah, I remember that. Even better when it was a competition winner! 'Congratulations, your highly valuable prize which everyone was trying to get their hands on can soon be found at...'
Boggle!!!! 😄😄 (24:29)
Soundwave is one of the most powerful Decipicons in transformers and could bring down Prime and Megatron if he wants to
Soundwave and Megatron was voice by the Legendary Frank Welker
Is it just me, or did Rod acquire a slight Aussie accent from his time there?
Often wonderd if the audience know what is in the coldrun
Apparently they used to switch off the monitors in the studio at that point to make sure there was no cheating.
Emma and Spencer at 3:47
Ooooo!💕
Of course, in hindsight, this was all obviously pre-arranged. As if they'd just phone some kid on the 0ff-chance when he might be there.
Actually, it wasn't pre-arranged at all, they *did* phone on the off-chance, and it frequently went badly wrong on live TV! Exhibit A: ruclips.net/video/YgET5kkoSZE/видео.htmlm1s
33:22 I know the diffrence between a misplaced tape and a printing error, i can confirm you cant fix that, that is caused due to a printing error.
Actually, this one is just a playback glitch and 100% _is_ fixable (and I since have). I'm irritated that I uploaded the episode before noticing it.
@@VideotapeFTW ye
I've sent you a private message, Lindsay - you should find it in your Inbox under the drop-down menu in the top right of any RUclips page. I look forward to hearing from you! :-)
That's good of you to do that brah
Here's that bike I mentioned:

More advanced than the hovergrot. :-)
I am digging Spencer's Han Solo hair.
Who isn't?
@@randomdude8790 he looks absolutely splendid, as always
I hope that girl played the shit out of that Atari.
I know I would have. In fact, I probably would now, too.

Ok
Is croc a guy or a girl?
He's male.
