Thanks for taking the time to out this together, great video! Found myself still bouncing back and forth on which one to get during the video! Waiting on the next Mac release and thinkin Mac Mini M4 will be a beast upgrade! So yeah, need a screen! I’m still 50/50 so hope Apple drop a better cheaper Studio monitor in October too!
You're welcome! I'd say there's a less than 10% chance the Apple will undercut it's existing studio display, but never say never! I've got another BENQ review coming out in the next few days so plenty of options to consider in the end!
Great review Kirk thank you! I'm looking to switch across from my dual 27" BenQ setup to a single 32" for photography and video work and don't want to splash out on an overkill Mac Pro display. This with its specs sounds like a winner :)
That BenQ is almost the same price as the Studio Display, and it's only 4K. It's $1500 cdn vs $1899 for the Studio Display. I'd rather get the actual 5K monitor for just a little bit more.
Yeah here in Australia the price difference is about $750, which is substantial for a lot of people. Got to pick and choose what works for you in the end!
You're the only non-paid reviewer of BenQ monitor (this model and the previous one) I found. I'm still considering to get the Apple Studio DIsplay though. Wonder if the new Apple Studio Display is around the corner. Great review!
If you’ve got the budget. Get the Apple Studio Display. You won’t be disappointed. Hard to go from that display to this one ultimately for me. Aside from the size.
I know this is a MacBook monitor review, which means it basically only needs an HDMI/DisplayPort but the great connectivity should still be mentioned. Here you get a full Thunderbolt Dock integrated. Charging up to ~90W, daisy chaining a second monitor, connecting a second computer and peripherals which can use the KVM switch are very convenient features.
How is it for text work? Writing and reading? My distance from eye to monitor will be 24 to 36 inches usually. Currently using 27 inch LG Ultrafine but wanted to upgrade to a 32 inch. Will the lower ppi be a problem?
Thanks for your honest review of this monitor. Now I have time I want to do more landscape photography with Nikon D850 and good lenses. Replacing an old iMac I first planned on getting a new M4 iMac but the display size is not really interesting. So I intend to go for a new M4 Mac Book pro with an external display. What do you think, would this BenQ monitor be a good choice in my case ? I live in Hervey Bay and there is no place where you can actually see these monitors so I really would appreciate your opinion. Thanks !
This is a solid monitor, you shouldn't be too disappointed, but if your budget can stretch a bit more to the Studio Display, I reckon you'll be far happier. There's a few great selling points here, but you do miss out on the nicer design, the 5K panel at 27" and the other convenient features that come with the ASD. Otherwise this BENQ panel is still great!
I need my space to match, so there's no way I'm buying anything other than Apple, and I like a larger monitor, so I bought the Pro Display XDR. I wish it was actually bigger, because I'm used to a 38 inch.
Thanks for the very honest and practical review.. every other reviews seem to be missing things that matter most for regular use.. I noticed everything on the screen feel zoomed out with small icons etc.. Is that due to the macOS scaling you mentioned in the video? Other than, Apple studio display and this one which other display would you recommend for macOS users?
Yep that would be due to the scaling, one of the down sides of a 4K panel on a 32" screen with MacOS you can get used to it though. Can't really comment on other monitors though, this is all i've used
Hi, I'm undecided whether to buy the Studio Display or the BenQ PD3225U. Can you give me an objective opinion? Comparing them, excluding the difference in resolution, which one wins in terms of contrast and color uniformity beyond the numbers on paper?
Personally, I'd say it would purely come down to budget. The Studio Display in it's base form is almost 30% more expensive than the BenQ. As I said in the video, the BenQ doesn't make me want to replace my Studio Display. Beyond the numbers, I'd go for the Studio Display
I’d go with BenQ, I want a bigger screen. I know if go with Studio Display, it will be difficult to use a non-retina display and it's about time Apple needed to update their Studio Diispay. Currently using M1 iMac will see how good the BenQ display is. My general used it as a second monitor.
Thank you for the video! I'm very glad that I found it, because I'm now faced with choosing a monitor. Color is important to me. I use davinci and dehancer. But I don't want to spend 2k bucks for an apple. Do you really think the color reproduction of this monitor is excellent and suitable for my tasks?
I wonder why no other brand like BenQ makes a 32in 5k display, I always go back to the fact that for professional work, i.e. working on typography and vector, you'll be better off with Studio Display.
That 4K resolution is a dealbreaker for me. How can they say it’s for a MacBook without matching the 5K resolution? BenQ should drop the speakers and pairing software-we only care about a matching 5K resolution for a truly crisp display! I don’t understand why no company gets this. It's so obvious, yet no one has done it. What’s going on? I’ve been waiting for BenQ or Dell to step up with this for years now. My for 4k display makes me feel I am going blind cuz I am not getting that delicious crispy display after waiting for so many years. I am now starving to death and think that from now on I will no longer await a single beat for this company's to step it up.
@@DesignedbyKirk huh that's weird, I think simple way to prove it is to screen record the bug, if it's showed up on the recording then it's MacOS' fault. "Why?" Most GPU related issue will be so much chaotic than that, usually they got dots, lines, and rainbow artifact. Monitor/panel related issues usually is not interactive. meaning that it can be triggered via software but not by just switching desktop/apps. Your cursor still showed up in the black/blank area, so it most definitely a software issue. it can be a bug in BenQ software, but it can also be a bug with MacOS (while I personally have never seen that one before lol)

And the screen is 32 over 27. That’s a huge bump in value for the Benq
In India its 700 USD

@@DesignedbyKirk thanks. I might go for the Studio . I already have a LG 32 4K ultafine, that I’m planning to use a second monitor (vertically).
Ill wait for an apple refresh.

100%! It sure packs a lot of accessibility for sure

They do decent work!

nice video review, how is the font on the monitor? like for coding/
Personally, i'm not a programmer, but I can say it's good, not as sharp as the 27" 5K display however doesn't come close there

Definitely think the colour is great on the monitor and works well. Ultimately just falls short in resolution and convenience to be expected
What's that piece of software you use at 3:52? Thanks
Display Pilot 2

To work with MacOS scaling I don’t think 5K would be enough. It’d need be 6K to work well
There are 6k displays with 32 inches, but they're really expensive

Did you ever resolve the full screen swiping black screen?
No I didn't unfortunately, still seems to happen.
Thanks for the info!
what color space do you use for colorgrading ?
B-Raw in, Rec.709-A out for RUclips videos. Davinci Wide Color Gamut Intermediate during the project
5:50 isn't that bug on MacOS and not the display?
No, I have no issues with this on any other display apart from this one. Could be a GPU error with this panel specifically though!

If there is little difference in price then go for the Apple Studio Display.
What about Gaming ????? any good for that It would have been if Apple had done a 32" monitor
I don't game on my monitor sorry, never tested that!
AT 60hz it is a crime for a Macbook pros that already have 120hz even the iPhones pros that most people hold are 120z.
I’d always sacrifice refresh rate over panel quality. Studio display is only 60 and I wouldn’t substitute it for another
TN panel is just not good enough for any professional use, and its max brightness is 270 nits ??????
1. It's not an TN panel it's IPS
2. It's Max Brightness is 400 Nits
