On March 24th, 2022, Appian Media covered a major archaeological announcement in Houston, Texas, regarding a lead tablet found at the excavation site at Mt. Ebal in Israel. Hear from Craig Dehut and Stuart Peck as they break down the discovery and talk about reactions from the archaeologists who made the find.
Dr. Scott Stripling, an archaeologist featured in Appian Media's documentary - "Searching for a King: Israel's United Kingdom" ( • Searching for a King: ... ), discovered a folded lead tablet while wet sifting through discarded material from a past excavation on Mt. Ebal, in Israel. The excavation of the Mt. Ebal site was done in the 1980s and revealed an altar described in Deuteronomy 27 and Joshua 8. Written inside of the folded tablet are the Associates for Biblical Research claim are the earlier known Hebrew characters (dating to the late bronze age) and the earliest mention on YWH (Jehovah) found in Israel.

To add to the thought. No other book comes close. Why? Because it's a inspired book of prophecy!. One scholar, J. Barton Payne, has found as many as 574 verses in the Old Testament that somehow point to or describe or reference the coming Messiah. Alfred Edersheim found 456 Old Testament verses referring to the Messiah or His times. Conservatively, Jesus fulfilled at least 300 prophecies in His earthly ministry. There are many more prophecies dealing with people, cities, nations etc, many of it's prophecies were foretold thousands of years in advance. No other book produced by man carries these credentials, not one! 😎✝️

I just started a study at my church called God's Relics. Thats isnthe verse I used. Going story by story in the Bible showing the historic proof. The spiritual meaning being, don't just become another dusty relic for God.

@Kellie Patrick this was no ordinary altar. “One for Israel” RUclips channel explains in detail, but basically, pagan and other religious altars had steps going up, but Joshua’s altar is unique as it has a ramp going up. Also the Bible clearly stated the specific dimensions and materials that the altar should be made of, and it is exactly as described. Please don’t make the mistake of disregarding this important archeological discovery without first looking into it.

This is amazing I'm 15 and was having doubts for a while on whether the Exodus happened and if Moses wrote the Torah. When I heard you say there was writing in the box it clicked in my brain instantly and felt a wave of relief.

Continue to study KJV Bible and go to a bible believing church. A church that has no fear of preaching the sin and the grace. If you come across a scripture you think is a contradiction, then its your misunderstanding. Continue to PRAY about it and study. God will reveal the meaning eventually (baby steps).
I have a few scriptures I struggle with and it has been years. But then I see scriptures that is revealed within hours when I study the context. This is called seeking and it should never stop. You are looking for a treasure far better than what this world is offering.

Just looked it up. Mt. Ebal הר עיבל , which is near present day Nablus, is not far from Eilon Moreh.
Eilon Moreh is where Avram set camp, received the Three Messengers, was anointed to Avraham, then proceeded to barter with God if He would spare the city of Sdom if only 5 righteous were found in the city. My favorite part in the Bible.

Im an xray tech. There is a misunderstanding that lead blocks all xrays. It doesn't because xray produced have a variety of energy levels, some high enough to have decent chance to get through lead. In every hospital around 4 times a year someone xrays all the lead vest to make sure there are no cracks or holes. (with normal xray machines). Now I'm sure this chunk of lead was imaged with some sophisticated machine, not a simple diagnostic xray machine. But yeah, we are lucky this was discovered now. The digital detectors are REALLY getting good. If this was analyzed just 40 years ago, they wouldn't be able to appreciate it.

After god enabled the Hebrew people to take over the land, he gave the Hebrew people a "blessing" if they followed in his statutes and a "curse" if they failed to follow his statutes>

What a surprise for me that this video popped up today! My daily readings have been in Deuteronomy & Joshua this past week and I have been really drawn to understanding Moses and Joshua's ceremony of the curses and blessings of Mt Ebal & Mt Gerazim.

Another aspect of this is the idea that they actually had the technology to form lead or any kind of metal for that matter and be able to even leave any kind of writing on it. People were much more intelligent in those days than what mainstream leads most to believe.
No that is absolutely wrong, no one that has any ide of history would find the use of led between 1000 and 2000 bc impresive since fx the oldest smelted lead artifact a necles found is from 4000 to 6000bc and the oldest mine is estimated from around 6500bc both in turkey, and saying its impressive to be able to write on it just shows ignorance towards the metal because its extreemly soft for a metal, you could rip that tablet apart with your hands even when new and write on it with a stone with ease
Thats why nothing about this discovery is impressive other than now the oldest mention on yahweh.....cool.

Israel Finkelstein, an archaeologist and professor emeritus at Tel Aviv University, who wasn't involved in the discovery, cautioned that there is a "big gap" between the description of the find on Mount Ebal and the claims of the researchers regarding the implications for biblical studies and archaeology.
No detailed analysis of the claims would be possible until a scholarly article is published on the discovery, Finkelstein said; but he noted the curse tablet wasn't found in a clear archaeological context during an excavation, but in a pile of debris dating from an excavation in the 1980s.
He also questioned the proposed dating, noting that comparison of the Mount Ebal site to other sites dated by radiocarbon analysis suggest it may date from the 11th century B.C. - perhaps two centuries or more later than what was claimed - and he suggested the decipherment of the inscription on the tablet could also be subject to interpretation.
"In general, I am irritated by sensational claims of discoveries which ostensibly change everything that we know about the Bible and the history of ancient Israel," Finkelstein said.
That's exactly the same problem they're running into with the sifting project in Jerusalem. If you discover an object but it has been removed from its original setting, its value is significantly diminished.

This little lead tablet is a nice discovery and I’m glad it wasn’t left unseen by all but decay. However, it is not, by any stretch of the imagination, an archeological discovery that comes remotely close to the paradigm-shifting significance of the Dead Sea scrolls discovery.

Lol. Agreed. But it’s a little more than just disagreeing. The DSS changed many a scholarly paradigm regarding the times in which they were written. The helped establish the historicity of the eschatological mania the was prevalent at the time to mention one item. The DDS are their own unique field of ongoing study in ancient literature giving insights into that ancient culture and daily life that we would never have known. They are a profound contributor to NT studies. Will this little lead tablet be the catalyst to an intellectual eruption similar to that of DSS? It’s possible I guess. But until then, mic drop.

While this would “seem” an amazing discovery, there are number of issues, firstly, the find was out of context… this is a MASSIVE issue in archaeology, meaning it was not in its original place… therefore could have come from anywhere and be from any period! And why haven’t the images of the script the transcription was based on not been published? Are we take it on face value that the script was indeed proto hebrew and says what we are told? One, out of context, unseen script, ubiquitous lead tablet, doth not prove anything…

You are so right ! I believe People hastily jump to conclusions, hypothesize, and theories too often that they want to support what they want it to, too often which degrades history. This is irresponsible archeology and publicizing and needs peer review which may take some time along with other artifacts from that site to give it any credibility and verification if any.

Not so fast:
1) The provenance of the "tablet" is broken, as it was supposedly in a cast off pile from a dig.
2) So the dating is from the fact it is made of lead, with the presumption that lead is from certain mines that date to 1200 BCE.
3) They are NOT yet releasing the scans of the supposed internal characters, that is a "tell" to lack of confidence in them.
4) And all these totally unfounded claims go against a century of scholarship on the related subjects, meaning rather than having LESS evidence to back them up, as they do, they demand MORE. It is not there.
Putting it all together, I am highly skeptical. We don't know when it was made, we don't know what if anything is inside it. It is very premature to get excited about it, and I would instead suggest that images be demanded before anyone invests time and interesting in something that will most likely end up being a total dead end.

Speaking as a historian, do be careful connecting dots too far apart. Both it and the altar could easily be an artefact brought or added to the site later. So there is clearly correllation, but until other collaborative evidence can be catalogued, there is merely correlation.

As significant as this discovery is the discovery of the altar built by Noah is also significant. Located in southeastern Turkey it has a sculpture in high relief of an animal closely resembling behemoth referred to in Job Chapter 40.

I’d like to know how the name of God is spelled on this tablet they found. I’m sure it wasn’t YHW. Since the rabbis removed the name of YHWH nobody knows exactly how to spell or pronounce it. This tablet predates all that so it should tell us the accurate way to spell and pronounce the name of Elohim.
Looked it up. They claim it is just 3 Hebrew letters that represent The Name of God.

Check out Nehemiah Gordon and his videos on the name. Hebrew scholar who researched thousands of scrolls and has found the pronunciation by finding where the vowel points were put in. Very fascinating

I’m aware of Nehemiah Gordon. I saw him talking about how he believes he has run across ancient hand written copies of scripture where the rabbis accidentally wrote the name out.

if you listened to the video, a forgery was already ruled out. The inscriptions are on the inside of the tablet, and the tablet was impossible to open without destroying. It could only be read by thousands of internal laser scans, conducted in a special laboratory in Prague. It is impossible to forge something internally on a material that is so fragile that it can't even be opened without destroying it. It was next to impossible for the inscription to be recovered as it is. In a lot of ways, this tablet is similar to the copper Dead Sea scroll, which would be impossible to fake for the same reasons.
The fact that it is made out of lead makes me think about the woman in the ephah written in Zechariah that has the lead cover.

This is not a big deal. A book says a curse mountain and you find a curse tablet. This does nothing to prove magic/supernatural. It is evidence of decent record keeping of tradition.

Charles Oliver - I kind of scratched my head a little by your statement, "This does nothing to prove magic/supernatural. etc." My response or reaction to such a comment are mines alone, or perhaps others that share similar sentiment. Why does it always seem that whenever a discovery is made which seem to validate the reliability or historicity of the Bible, the naysayers make the charge that the discovery doesn't prove the supernatural? It has already been an established fact that no matter how authentic a biblical discovery may be, there would always be seemingly reasons for doubt in the minds of the nonbelievers.
When the evolutionist digs up bone fragments, then declares it to be evidence that proves a number of hypothesis concerning human evolution; why is that evidence more legitimate to the cause of evolution...and a discovery authenticating the reliability of the biblical narrative is of little or no consequences? It has already become a well known fact that whatever discovery is made validating the Bible is a nonstarter to atheists or skeptics.
It isn't an issue to believers if atheists or skeptics choose not to accept evidence validating the Bible - life will go on.

But what this find does show is that it accurately reflects the biblical tradition of Mount Ebal having some sort of connection with curses like the ones we see in Deuteronomy 27. I highly encourage you to read Ralph Hawkins dissertation on Mount Ebal. There is a lot of material that reflects what we see in the biblical account.

How do you date a piece of lead found in a trash pile? How do you know it was left by Israelites? Yahweh/El wasn't exclusive to Israel.

It is a "tablet" in the more modern sense of having pages. Thin lead pages. Thats how they fit the characters on there.

It’s a fantastic find. But I’m not sure it changes the mainstream view of the emergence of the Hebrew people from among the Canaanites. It seems reasonable that you would find a Yahwist writing from that period. I feel like a lot of your conclusions represent your biases more than critical application.
Probably not, but it does seem to undermine to a certain extent the notion that Israelites did not practice orthodox worship of YHWH when they first became a nation. I’ve seen many scholars proclaiming that Israel was originally a polytheistic nation when they first came to be. This little inscription if true seems to undermine that. If it’s correct of course. We need to wait for the article to come out.

Was trying to get an idea of the size of this mountain... It's a little less than twice as tall as one I've day hiked to the peak of and back a few times (Bell Mountain in Southern California). It has similar terrain as well. The main differences being the presence of trees (sparse) and smaller rocks. Takes me about 2 1/2 hours to summit Bell Mountain and about 3 hours back down. I'm thinking Mt. Ebal would take the same or less time to get to the top of. Mainly because it's not nearly as steep as Bell Mountain.

Discoveries like these help a rising believer but bigger than the Dead Sea Scrolls as a bit much, these scrolls in particular gives us an understanding of how the Bible lacks all the extra books found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, proving the Bible was manipulated by the council that chose what books they called Canon yet in The Dead Sea Scrolls there are over 66 books of scripture kept by the exiled priests from the temple, bloodline of the only appointed priests of the Levite tribe to keep scripture. This is not taught in church at least none that I could find. Books like Jubilees, 2nd Esdras and Enoch were among those scrolls and yet many Bible teachers and pastors called it Apocryphal making it seem they are unimportant.
