- In this latest of the 'Mindful Model Railways' join me for 20 minutes of reflection on the benefits of slowing down and enjoying even the 'most boring' of jobs in the hobby. This is part of a series of similar videos which can be enjoyed in my 'Mindful Model Railways' playlist.
Rushcliffe Halt, mentioned in the video, can be read about here:

Very peaceful but makes an enormous difference in the way it appears.
Thank you
Thank you James, I do my model making in the Normandy countryside, where we have barn owls, buzzards, redstarts and hawfinches. Have no layout yet, but hope to get underway soon, so these videos are an encouragement!
That sounds wonderful Steve, I hope you enjoy it when the time comes…
Very peaceful watching and listening to you. I will have to save the next “mindful” video for tiling a model building or similar…
Thank you, I’m so excited to hear people say they plan to do something equally mindful whilst listening… maybe I should do a mindful podcast!
Your videos give me an inner peace and inspire me te enjoy my modelling and slow down a bit. Thanks for the inspiration :)
Mark that's wonderful, I'm so glad - and more than that, you felt happy to share that. I hope there are more out there who find the same, I really must do another of the Mindful series!
Lovely - yes, paint the track, yes enjoy the process (if in stages if there’s a lot to do)
And yes I have the Badger in a cupboard still. Wonder how it would work now with a basic compressor? Even 30yrs later how many of us have ‘moved on’ to a basic double-action brush which is far more suitable for small models. Apart from the occasional clogging, I really enjoy sessions with the airbrush and end up finding more things to paint than planned!
I treat my airbrushes as tools that ‘wear out’, I clean them every time I use them, but it’s not a laborious task, and they are a real must for quality results… that said, it’s not as mindful. The compressor noise especially.
James, once again you have resonated with me with your ponderings. I started watching and thought, no, I'll wait until later when I also have something of a mindful relaxing project to do. I have a Lego building project to do today and listening to you was a perfect way to lose myself away from the "devices" 🙂 It is Autumn in Australia and near me they are doing "burn Offs" to clear bush to make the summer less prone to large scale fires. So all around where I live is heavy smoke and I am not able to go outside as it is quite hazardous to breathe the air. So listening to you and doing my project is perfect!! Thanks.. John
John, thank you - I loved to hear that you could use that alongside your own project, and for the description of you working, I was right there...
What colours are you using? And a suggestion: why not start painting sleepers that are closer to the camera?
Because it’s not about painting the sleepers, individually but painting the sleepers as a whole. Colours are shown in the video, I used Humbrol 98 and 64. Thanks for watching.
