    ----------------------------------------------------
I've been a drummer for over 15 years, and I've been a musician for over 25, but I've only been recording drums seriously for less than a decade. I quickly learned how to get great drum sounds with a few secrets.
In previous videos, I've talked about the importance of selecting the right drum heads, hitting your drums (particularly the snare drum) in such a way to produce the best tones, tuning the drums right, and much more. I've even talked about the importance of setting up your microphones the right way too! Room mics are one of my biggest secrets to getting the best sounding drums in your headphones, through your studio monitors, or even through your iPhone speaker.
Today, we're going to get into my DAW - Logic Pro X on my MacBook Pro - to show you how to use a couple key tools that will give you better drum sounds in no time at all. We'll also cover the benefits of paid plugins, like the ones I used from Waves Audio, as well.
Let's give a big thanks to @ZeKePlaysDrums for his great playing, unique approach to music creation, and his wonderful-sounding audio. Connect with Zeke if you're looking for drum lessons in Oregon or if you need a drummer for your next tour!
Drum-related audio on my end was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling.
    Mics include:
    - SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
    - Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
    - Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top) - Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
    - Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
    - Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
    - AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
    - Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
    - Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I really need a nap - like now.
Oh, and that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/ Questions?

You should have tried to match the EQ settings between the stock and waves plugins to better show the difference. Also, in your own mixes, do you actually rely mostly on presets? Or do you EQ and compress manually?

    • @timbofromkeno
      @timbofromkeno  Год назад

The EQ settings were similar, but the compression settings (and other shaping features on the CLA plugin) are difficult to match. I could've better matched the overall output of the Logic plugins mix and the Waves plugin mix, but I also think the loudest that comes with those paid plugins has more character than the utilitarian sound of the Logic compressors and limiters.
Regarding presets, I certainly start with presets very often (especially in an unfamiliar room with an unfamiliar setup). It just gets me up to speed quickly without wasting time. But when I get into the details, I dial in sounds further by modifying each plugin's settings for sure.

    • @timbofromkeno
