Etihad staff should have provided you with overnight accommodation and food etc unless missing the flt is your fault.
First of all keep all the receipts of your extra expenses incurred.
Also keep the boarding pass .All airlines have an obligation under international convention.
You can get help and advice from Citizens Adbice Bureau free of charge. Also you can claim under your travel insurance, if had taken out insurance prior to travel. Seek help from your travel agency.
Whether it's direct flight or not does not make any difference with regard to you and your family
not receiving due care and Consideration.
The distress and hardship caused by the lack of consideration from the air line staff is unacceptable.

I was worked in travel agency last 15 years in Middle East,IATA Agency vazhi eduthalum Airlines ninu direct eduthalum ore formality annu.etihad nte responsibility annu .they want to provide hotel accommodation,compensation voucher and next immediate connection.if you buy the tickets from third party websites and non iata agencies they will not take responsibility,if they will not provide anything you should complaintet
