  • Although I have done a lot of videos showing how to install sound decoders I occasionally like to do a mobile only decoder installation for those folks who don't prefer or can't afford sound. So in this video I'll show how to install a SoundTraxx mobile decoder in a older LifeLike F3 diesel, now made by Walthers. One reason for using the SoundTraxx decoder is that the drive settings are essentially the same for these mobile decoders as they are for Econami and Tsunami decoders. Therefor you can install one in a second loco in a consist with a Soundtraxx Econami or Tsunami decoder and they will operate essentially the same since they all have the same control equations. They even have F11 braking. The other advantage is they are relatively inexpensive compared to sound decoders, allowing you to stretch your modeling dollars. For complete information and to download manuals visit the www.sountraxx.com website.

Greatest hobby to invest into Ho locomotive's with DCC n Sound technology they give the locomotive's more power n they'll run better with sound technology than regular version.

I'm so glad you talked about adjusting CV215 in my TSU2 decoder to match the voltage setting of 15.0V hard -wired into my MC2 mobile decoder. I was unaware of that needed adjustment. Thanks so much for your excellent video and detailed explanation as always. SoundTraxx makes such excellent decoders and the mobile only ones are a great alternative in consists to save some money and work seamlessly together.

    Third!
Great video as always, Mr. Puckett! Though, TBH, this is the first time that I've heard of the Hyperdrive feature. My right brain went on a brief tangent thinking, "I wonder what a B-unit locomotive looks like going through hyperspace," and I had to rewind once my left brain took back control of the thought train lol!

Nice video Larry, very informative. I see you don't use any kind of flux when you solder. In some installation videos I've watched the installer will use paste or liquid flux on every tab and on every wire. It would appear that this isn't really necessary. Is it just a matter of personal preference? Thanks

The solder I use has flux in it and it is enough for small spot jobs like these. I do use paste resin flux for larger jobs like rail joiners, feeders, etc.

Instead of using separate decoders- i just run mini 6 pin connectors between engines. I run 3 powered engines and 2 speakers off 1 sound decoder. I have a F7 ABA all powered, and an FA ABBA with a dummy B unit housing the decoder. Run jumpers through the engine doors, you don't see it, and you only pay for 1 decoder.

So the decoder handles the current from 3 or 4 motors OK?

Well, that was interesting. 3M makes a lot of good products, but ear plugs for when at the shooting range are NOT on the list.

    Hi Larry,
Love you videos. Learned so much. Have you ever used a Bi-colored, two lead LED? They glow red/green depending on polarity. I have been connecting them to the power connections on my tortoise machines(1,8), and on my DTDP switch on my control panel. They work great. Do you see any downside to using these?
Thanks for doing what you do.
    Frank

No, they should be fine. I just went a slightly simpler route.

why not use a longer piece of plastic channel?.... then you could screw the decoder to the plastic , for easy removal if need be down the road.....

Thanks for the tip of the double sided foam tape,I just installed the same decoder into one of my locos,I am having trouble getting my beacon light on the roof to work,I hooked up the wires tothe #5 tab on the side and to the front #2 tab my problem is trying to program the light to #5 on my controller, any ideas, thanks.

Configuring the functions for special lighting effects can get problematic. Which is why I always use DecoderPro for anything more complicated than changing the address and modifying the basic speed settings.

New subscriber I've looked through some of your videos do you have anything that deals with n scale. Like installing DCC decoders and sound bords.I have watch it with your HO steam engines.I'm a newbie to setting up a permanent layout.i have repaired a few trains my wife gotten bought me through a online auction auction. I found I loved the n gauge electric trains more.i do have HO also. Anything you can tell me will be great full.

Sorry but no N-scale specific content. Of course the material on laying track, building models, painting, wiring, and essentially everything but N-scale locos and rolling stock would transfer among scales.

so adding the plastic piece on top of the motor is that how you isolated the motor? thanks

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  3 месяца назад

No, the motors on this model are built isolated. The plastic piece serves as a mounting plate but also keeps the circuitboard from shorting out on the frame.
