The 62 pleased my ears more, warmer with more depth.
The 65 sounds fantastic, more modern, gritty and mean. Great !!!

Nobody want to talk about that Badass bridge on the '62?

What make, type/model, and gauge of strings were on these basses at that time and how old were they relative to each other. This matters a lot to how basses sound. Different strings will make a quite discernible difference.

What amp n speaker is being used? How are the controls on the amp set up? What brand of strings is on it? Flat wound or round wound? These questions are for the 1962 Fender p bass.

They both sound good. 62 sounds like Jamerson, 65 sounds like Paul Jackson.

      5 years later...that's exactly what I thought as I was watching 👍
      I'd have the '65.

Jamerson had a circa '61/'62 P and a circa '65/'66 P. There's an ongoing debate which was the famed "Funk Machine". The preponderance of evidence I've seen has me leaning toward believing the famous Funk Machine was the P that was made and he bought in '65 or '66. The clue is the transitional design Fender waterslide decal on the headstock of the bass attributed to being the Funk Machine. This came after the spaghetti-style font of the Fender decal you would see on a '61 and '62.

What do you think of the Fender Vintage '63 P Bass. I just bought one and it sounds great. I also own a 1987 Fender P Bass made in Japan which sounds ok,but the '63 P Bass sounds tighter and the workmanship seems a better quality. What do you guys think?

I also have LaBella flatwound strings on both. Old School. lol

As any basses you can find great cbs fender basses but also not that great. Even if the 65 bass we reviewed sounds good the 62 bass feels better in my hands. The new reissues basses from Fender its the same.My advice is to try before buying. I have owned several Fender Japan basses and the playability is often great but the electronic often seems messy.

You have a classic Bass, I love the 63 especially with flat wound strings.

The '65 just sounds a bit punchier to me, and like it has a bit more "top".

The '65 does sound more modern. It has more grind.

I think we might have a Chuck Dukowski fan here. Things didn't really go downhill until well into '66. Regardless of year, if it has an L-serial number neck plate, pre-F plate, it's reliably pre-CBS quality and more desirable from both the collector and player-grade standpoints. All 2-pc Fender necks, with flat lam or round lam rosewood or maple cap are laminated. People make way more of the difference than makes sense because they don't even really understand what difference there is. From the quality, durability/stability, and playability standpoints it makes no difference. Claims that believe this construction detail makes a tonal difference are fooled. People who claim Leo Fender and Forrest White chose to switch to "veneer" board because they're cheaper to make are 100% mistaken; the opposite is true.

65 ' P.Bass has got more low midrange.

You need to press the strings down a little harder to avoid that fret noise

Don't care for his tone much... but the 62 sounds a little punchier IMO
