My friend Howard Ulyate and I having some fun with an incredible 1965 Fender Jazz bass. Howard bought the bass from Bill Bieschke in the early 90's.
I recorded the intro and outro music directly into Logic Audio using an Apogee Duet Interface and an A-Designs REDDI. The bass is amazing!! The strings that are on the bass are probably 5+ years old and the bass makes them sound alive!!!
I just love a bass that you have to struggle, or "bicker" with to get what you want out of it. Now, I don't mean straight out fighting with a bass to play it. I'm talkin' just a smidgen of bickering (BIG difference! ) with it. Somehow, it's WAY MORE REWARDING, for some damn reason. My all-original (minus 2 pickguard screws) '61 Jazz Bass, is like that. And, I gig it EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND, along with my Ken Lawrence 5-string. Awesome, awesome basses. The '61 Jazz as a GREAT STORY....... Back in 1987, while in college, I traded a long-scale, (very badly, I might add!) de-fretted Squire Bullet Bass, PLUS a post-dated $75 check, and a 1/2 ounce of some mid-grade, full of seeds, Mexican brick weed....... All to get that '61 Jazz. Ahh..... The good ol' college days. Haha. Great times, back then. Great times.
beautiful sound, love that kind of mid range sound
Bsck again on this vid

That bass would cut through the mix beautifully!
@muscledad420,never more true word spoken.i firmly believe the original jazz basses made by fender are THE BASS.no wonder here in the U.K. they are very expensive.i love them and thses guys do great demos and videos
Unreal!
@Vinícius Selbach It's because, for the most part, Brazilian Rosewood is protected, you can't buy, sell, or trade it, for the most part.
Great job steve.i would take this over jacos bass of doom.it looks and sounds fantastic man! Digging these old fenders.keep em coming, love it
Thanks!! Really appreciate it @DissolvingTime!!!! If I had to guess....I'd guess these strings were DR's, that were put on this bass more than 4 years ago. I will ask him to chime in on that one!!

Hello. I got the same bass, same year and same color. Please "Mr Bass Hang" do you know the name of this original color, or maybe ask his owner ? I have it for more than 20 years and never saw the same color model, except this one on your video !
Thanks by advance
Looks like a "Mocha color"
I have the same Bass and a 1971 S3t
Thanks everyone!!!

HOLA AMIGO ! Original neck? About the sound is little different, I think is because for bridge change !
♥_♥ it's a warrior bass
I have always had this feeling that people are a bit biased towards old instruments. If you ignore the "vintage effect" there is no reason to say that these instruments are superior to everything built today. Of course this instrument does sound amazing but I am sure you can get new instruments even slightly under a 1000$ that sound as good as these since crafting techniques have advanced over time. It has always bothered me. Can you tell me if i am wrong and why exactly.
Also what is your take on restoring these old instruments, for example giving this one in the video a new finish. Good or Terrible idea.
usually when the price is so high in these instruments, is because it was made from a really old age where fender was at the top and also it is an instrument that has endured the test of time, and typically they sell for more because of outstanding beatiful wear patterns in the body and the neck and vintage hardware. It is literally as close as you get to having all those sounds that famous artists have used way back in the days. these instruments could literally last you more then 100 years, by the time you're dead a 1958 precision bass if taken care of properly will still be safe and sound while you and me are rotting somewhere in a grave buried 7 feet below earth (no offence of course)
貓主席 "I have always had this feeling that people are a bit biased towards old instruments." It is often said that we look at the world as a hole. Huh? Did I spell something wrong? Had you not read it I'm sure you would have understood it.
But it's you that has composed your hole lot of knowledge by knowing "people" as a generality. Me thinks you're more alone than you realized. Also, I share your unpopularity with those who came long before you yet seem to be so far behind. Frankly, 7 billion+ people don't play bass. Of the thousands that do only a fraction of them are bass players. Some day, it's to be hoped, you will learn the difference between "bias" and "appreciation". Moreover, as time tempers your perception that beauty is far more than what YOU know you'll recognize why people collect model-T Fords but don't recall the first Datsun.
I had the same thoughts while watching this video. "It is the better bass ever made". Wow, easy man. Loud words)
Id rather have a peavey T40
honestly, i compared a 63 jazz bass in a vintage guitar shop with my 60s classic mexican fender jazz and they sounded very very close. using new strings on both you cant tell the difference sound wise. theres quite a bit of difference with my other mexican jazz though, but its largely due to a different bridge (brass saddles vs stainless steel saddles)
all that said, people will pay top dollar for those really worn over the years fender jazz basses. and thats fine.
cracks me up that cats today with their high-end amps and wacky active basses are trying so hard to get the sound of a 60's Jazz Bass through an acoustic amp ala jaco.
I had, I'm now embarrassed to admit, an early '65 Jazz in the same configuration except it had an L serial number neck plate.
Nice bass! But I think it would be worth (as it already has been repainted), to refinish it and add a nice pickguard. The additional string retainer could be removed too...
I don't understand the thing about the action height to sound good. It's either a matter of a problem that's limiting the setup, likely repairable, or he's speaking on a matter of personal preference.
was the neck/headstock stained/painted too? I noticed they're basically the same dark tan as the repainted body.
Bassy... Tasty.
Wasn't 1965 the last year for the pre-CBS Fender instruments? My Fender P-bass in lake placid blue is from 1966.
fender sold to cbs in late 1965
sold in early '65.
1965, a nice year for jazz basses ... i would just immediately remove the second string tree : ))
Hum, didn´t know that, and I live in Brazil, heheheh
What the song is playing in the beginning?
flat strings?
Is it refin or custom color? What color is that?
best
I actually have a Pre-CBS '65 Jazz bass for sale if anyone is interested. Let me know!
Who is the name of the song at 00:00 at 00:34 ? Please
