My mom would scrub her cast iron skillets with soap and water, dry them off, wipe them with a lite coat of bacon grease, wipe that down and they were ready for another use on the wood burning stoves. That was way back in the 60s and used them up to the 2000s. The old school people could cook up some food with their kitchen skills and better than the technology in cooking out today.
I have lots of cast iron in different stages of shiny to rusty. I have obsessed over many videos. Each one has only part of the picture. Your video covers all the bases (starting with using soap and never again). Your steps make the confusion clear. 2023 cast iron here we come!!!
Not really understanding the 22 thumbs down. But hey, some people live that type of life. Everything this brother lays out on RUclips,is simplified and makes more people's lives easier and more pleasant. Heck, I thought everyone loves good cooking and a clean/organized cook. AB, you are the go to guy for many of us. Thanks👍🏿👍🏿.
A friendly Hello, Eric...I love this channel & think what makes it extra special is JB is also such a *likable* man outside of his kitchen expertise...He's the "real deal"...
They are announcing to the world that they are smucks. They probably don't get any attention in their personal life so they go around trying to make other people feel bad.
I doubt the dislikes are due to the colour of AB’s skin… I would wager that it’s due to the controversial world of cast iron care. Some people say don’t use dish soap, some do. Some say don’t use olive oil, some say don’t use paper towel, it goes on and on… Whatever works for you and if you’re happy with the results that’s all that matters
Great video. After oiling I use Scott blue shop paper towels to wipe off oil. The towels are great for absorbing the oil and not leaving lint after wiping like white paper towels will do. I also put a large baking sheet pan on the bottom of the oven to catch oil drips.
Nothing but the truth!!! I followed this video to a T. Used Avocado Oil spray (500F smoke point) and my cast irons could not have turned out better. Rust prevention worked so well I wish I could put my truck in the oven. Thank you for making this video. You’ve got another subscriber after this one. Amazing!
LOVE how showed in detail about seasoning. I only did the process once all my life and wondered why it takes so long for it to get “non-stick.” I do wash them every few months with dishwashing liquid but don’t plan to do that anymore either. Thank you SO MUCH for this wonderful information!
I have been cooking with cast iron for a long time and have trying to keep my cast iron up. This is by far on of the best videos I have seen on seasoning your cast iron. I guess I didn't realize you just keep putting more and more layers on back to back. I got my rain day all figure out . Thank you for your very well done / informative video.
This should be the only video you need to watch. He is right about the OIL, it is your choice as long as it gets oiled several times. I prefer corn oil only because it has a higher smoke point (450). This man is on point with this process
I've had my own cast iron skillet for a couple of years, but never really felt like i got as much use out of it as my nonstick. Recently tho i've been using the cast iron a lot more and i've been having a ton of fun cooking stuff on it. Seasoning always felt like a mysterious chore that everyone had a different opinion on, but I feel a lot more confident after watching your video. thanks!!
Thanks AB, whenever I check out instructional cooking vids, I usually check out at least 3 for the same subject/recipe so I can get multiple perspectives but I always make sure you are one of them if you have a vid up. Reason being, you are the best at teaching the methods out of any RUclipsr. Appreciate you!
Thank you for this video. I still use Crisco around my home and now I'm seasoning my 150 yr old cast iron. My Mother (R.I.P) and Grandmother (RI.P) would be proud I found your channel.😊
Hey 🆎I’ve actually restored cast iron pans I found at my Granny’s house. My Mom was ready to toss them. I use what I have too to get that nice sheen. Cast iron is the best cookware ever. That can on the stove contained bacon grease for whatever it was needed for.
You are my hero! I grew up with cast iron all my life and still I use them everyday! I watch so many videos of how people season there pans and most people doing the wring way! Great job!
Look up kent rollins on youtube. The man is funny and teaches you EVERYTHING there is to know about cast iron and recipes. Worth a look like this channel is. He's actually the exact opposite AB lol. Skinny, white country AF and loud haha.
I just finished seasoning all my cast irons & a carbon steel, 4 times, after watching your video! About half a year ago, I did do my 1st seasoning with your video. But back then, I was lazy and I hated the smell, I only did once. It looked good enough, but always wondered what 4 times will do! Today, finally, I took my time and did finished 4 times! Coating my waffle pan was really challenging, but I love all my cast iron pans and carbon steel wok shine and glassy as you said!! I felt so unsafe whenever I wipe my carbon steel, I see the brown residue, but now I see absolutely nothing! 4 coats really wraps around the pans thoroughly! Love, love the way the looks and feels. I am sure I will do this every year or so.. Thank you!!
I was just in the middle of cooking fish with my cast iron when you posted this. Never knew you had to season it at times like that. I always washed it then coat it with olive oil and put it away. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Thank you so much. I just got a new cast iron skillet. I remember my Mom and Grandmother doing it your way and it always worked. I must have looked at 15 videos on how to do this and yours was the best. I know this method works from my heritage. I have a smaller skillet that I got from my Mom to cook cornbread in. I needed it bigger one but was afraid I wouldn't know how to season it for the first time. Thanks once again for this video.
Thank you for this! My mom has been talking about seasoning hers for a while. I bought her all brand new set and cast iron Dutch oven for Mother’s Day but she still wants to season her old ones. I’m 22 and learning from her 💕
I just recently received my cast iron pans thru a great friend who knew of someone who has recently passed away from cancer and I'm very happy, blessed and forever appreciative of getting it, judging by what I have researched if I were to buy the five different cast iron pans,it would be about $150.00 plus in money value, all of my teflon's are gone except for one,and it's all gone on the coating, but still works awesome and it's big, wide, and deep for cooking large amounts of food. Thank you for your videos and Thumbs up ALWAYS AND IM A NEW SUBSCRIBER BECAUSE IM JUST LIKE MOST PEOPLE,I TRULY❤👍💯😋GREAT PREFERABLY HOME COOKED RECIPE FOOD...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEOS !
19 years young and bought a cast iron at Marshall’s a couple days ago for $15! Wilkinson brand. My friend asked if it was preseasoned and i came here. Followed the steps and it came out glossyyyyyyyyyyy. I only messed up on the handle by not making it even. This was so fun and i plan on keeping it for the rest of my life.
I'm 62 and still use the first one I bought 40 years ago at a flea market. I do all my cooking in either Cast Iron, Enameled Cast Iron, or a Carbon Steel Wok. I think I have 15 pieces of Cast Iron. Fry potatoes and deep fry French fries when you start cooking and it helps build up seasoning. Also bake cornbread or brownies in them. It helps them become more nonstick. Then it will cook meat without it sticking and make cleaning easier.
"Hey, look at me when I tell you this." OMG, that's perfect. Man, that's how you know this is IMPORTANT and you better MIND! I haven't even finished watching the video yet & I had to comment on that. Cracking me up. I love your videos, AB. Thanks for making them and always being so down to earth.
I reset my cast iron from this video. I now clean the pan with kosher salt and water with only a sponge. I then heat it in the burner to dry it and put a fresh layer of crisco on the hot metal. No food is sticking and I don't need to heat it in the oven. Do this every time you cook. Thanks, AB!
Thanks for explaining the reasoning for certain steps so clearly! I finally understand how to season a cast iron pan. Thank you! Been wondering why my food has been sticking to the pan so much.
I love your channel! My wife and I binge watch your videos and use a lot of your recipes. I recommended your channel to a ton of people. Keep up the hard work! God bless
My Mother in Law passed down one of her cast iron skillets to me as a wedding gift! I have been trying to take care of it! This simplifies it it for me! Thanks so much! Now I can pass it down to my girls!
I Picked up a couple of small cast Iron pans last week one is a#2 Pitty Pat’s Porc the other one has no markings The small one was heavy rusted got it cleaned up with a brass wire wheel and a goof Brillo pad. Washed them very well now going to do the seasoning like you have taught us thank you for the great video!
I've recently inherited a 7 piece cast iron set including (2) skillets, a chicken fryer, dutch oven, griddle and lids. They need seasoning and this video is right on time!
This video was perfect for me. I have my 1st cask iron, I've done everything you said And all the lil issues you talked about I had. You made me feel so much more confident. THANK YOU
I've had a skillet in my closet for about 10 years and was always too intimidated to season it. We bought a Blackstone Griddle this summer and we love it then I remembered I had the skillet. I will be seasoning it tomorrow. Food is just so much better in the cast iron. I see a large purchase of pans in my future. I loved your video. Thank You for making it so easy. Stay well and God Bless
Thank you for showing me how to seasoning my cast iron. I just brought me a small set. I always wanted them because we had them growing up. I didn't know how to used them. Now am going to try cooking with them. 😊
I have a lot of CI and have watched a lot of videos of how to season them. But this is by far the best one I've found. For you to be so young, you did a fantastic job! Kudos to you and keep up the great work.
Thank you for this video! I was not taught how to cook so I have to research EVERYTHING. I went through many articles and videos… couldn’t get a straight, simple answer… and then I found yours! Very helpful. Thank you for posting!
Hi AB, congrats on your second anniversary. I watched some of the podcast. (Will finsh watching soon). Just wanted to say that first. Also, thank you for all the wonderful meals you make for us all. My favorite line, "I'm not finna overtalk it". By the way, I made your Pot Pie for my family and they've been asking when will I make it again. So that tells you, I am definitely a happy viewer. I made other meals as well. Keep being awesome and I see nothing but more success coming your way. Thank you for making us all feel like we are right in the kitchen with you and the authenticity that come along with it. It's the authenticity for me. Thank you!
I was looking for a video to send my buddy, and this video does it perfectly. Better than most. Too many people miss steps or overcomplicate it. This video was perfect man!
Great video! When we were growing up in 60's, soap had large amounts of Lye in it, Lye consumes all biodegradable materials, so it would strip off seasoning from a cast iron skillet, modern soaps now days have zero Lye in it, making use of gentle grease cutting soaps like Dawn quite alright and safe to use in your cast iron without worry of stripping off seasoning.
Hey AB. I was always told not use dish detergent when cleaning cast iron. Now, I know I can clean cast iron the right way. Never knew how to clean and season cast iron. You drove home a very important point when you gave the example with your hand being the porous surface then being filled up with layers of oil. Now, I can pass on these pearls of wisdom as well as some of my cast iron cookware.
I like to season with what accents what I cook in it - bacon grease. Once seasoned black and glossy, I wipe it out and it's DONE. I avoid metal utensils with it too. Love 'em. My Mother always cooked with cast iron, and I watched Her care for it many years. Thanks for the video! Nothing like seasoned cast iron!
Thanks AB got a couple of skillets passed down from my grandmother probably close to 100 yrs old. Even got one that is very thin 1/4 high sides I used to make pancakes. I gotta stip and re season some of the other ones using your method that's old school right there!!!
Thank you i needed this, this process was fortunately not passed down to me just as yet, and thats because these women are still living and cooking with their skillets! Thanks i will give this a go.
I got my chainmail and stainless steel scrubies from Amazon two days ago. I'm seasoning my old cast iron skillet the real way right now! Thank you, AB!
I know this is two years old but I just bought the double handle lodge skillet exactly like yours and sanded it smooth on the inside and I absolutely love it.
Thank you AB for the instructions on how to season a cast iron skillet AB is amazing and very skilled in his cooking skills and I love how clean his kitchen is
IM SO HAPPY I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL KING. YOU'VE HELPED ME OUT IN THE KITCHEN SO MUCH. NOW IM ABLE TO FEED MY WIFE AND KIDS A LOT BETTER NOW. THANK U SO MUCH FOR BEING INFORMATIONAL. I'LL LOVE TO SUPPORT U
Thanks for the simple straightforward videos. Believe it or not just today I noticed a perfectly sized old cast iron skillet hanging in the shop. I was wondering how difficult it would be to bring it back to life? You made it look simple and easy. After I get it brought back to life I'm going to get rid of the cheap skillets that I have now.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Came across your video this am. Did such a lousy job of seasoning my skillet, it's 5am, I scrubbed it clean, starting the process. Thank you so much. A new subscriber. Last 450, the skillet looks great! Mesa, AZ January 21, 2023
As soon as your video was over I gathered up my Dutch oven and 3 Wagner skillets and got started wow they turned out beautiful. Liked and subscribed ( THANK-YOU )
Thank you for putting this video together! I've watched others, yet yours have caught my attention. I'm following the instructions right now. I'm currently on to my second cycle of placing my pan back into the oven. If time permits, I will try for at least three oven cycles. I will update my comment to let you know how it turn out. Thank you again.
That was great. I just got my first cast iron skillet. What I heard was to make them truly non stick they have to be smooth on the bottom like yours and that takes many years . I don't have many years so I guess I will have to do a lot of scrubbing and seasoning.
Thank you for this! I recently got a new cast iron skillet, and my daughter put it in the dishwasher to clean it before using. 😳😩🤦🏽♀️ It's good now. She knows it needed some oil, so they're both doing well! 😂
Great video I bought a cast iron last week I've used it a few times and already made a couple of mistakes but will remedy these now thank you no more dish washing soap will go into it and I will spend my Sunday seasoning it. Thank you and nice kitchen!
Thank you for making this video. You’ve explained this process much better than anyone else I have seen. This video is a gem. I have one question. How often should I season my cast iron pans? Again, thank you for making this video.
Haven't been a cast iron skillet cooker yet but now that I'm ready to be I couldn't think of anyone else's video to learn the tips and tricks from than you brotha, appreciate the explanations.
dang i really liked seeing the differences between 2, 3 and 4. its was actually noticable. Ive never had to "reset" my cast iron yet but now i got a solid foundation on how if i ever have to. So far all my glorious steak cooks have kept my cast iron looking prime
Hey AB, you are definitely my favorite on RUclips! As my new hobbie is cooking you have taught me how to cook so many delicious meals. Thank you for making it simple and easy! Please do a lamb stew. 😊
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB no problem brother.... your next video should be a bbq inspired smoked spaghetti... I've made it a few times and I'll never have traditional spaghetti again. Lol
Not using dish soap after seasoning is a common misconception. The soap does not ruin the seasoning since it is a polymerzied oil and not just oil, soaking it does however.
I’ve never really used soap on mine just coarse salt hot water and dry well and put on the burner touch of oil get to just smoking turn burner off and let it chill. never had an issue. But you’re not wrong I think people are conflating using soap with letting the pan soak with soap in it in the sink
@@Crawdoodle exactly!!! I can’t get my mother in law to understand that. I borrowed her cast iron one day when I needed two and I only had my one. She was so serious when she told me not to wash it with soap. I tried to tell her that it was the lye in the soap that would ruin it, but she is stubborn as all hell and very old fashioned 😂 I don’t use much dawn, but just a couple of drops has never hurt mine at all!
I am new to the whole cast iron world. I seasoned it but what happens when I cook in it and how do I clean the food residue once I make something in it? AB stated to never use soap after seasoning. So, how do I clean it? Thanks so much!
Outstanding video. Showed and described the whole entire process from the very beginning, still managing to show alternatives and considering other possibilities for other people. And don't get me started on how meditative it looks like it is to wipe the grease off and on!
I really enjoyed this video because I learned exactly what I was looking for, how to season a cast iron skillet. I've had a skillet for many years but hardly ever used it. The frying pan I've been using is starting to lose the nonstick coating and I think it's time for it to go. To be honest, I never really felt that it cooked well enough. So I'm going to break out the old cast iron one and see how that works out. Thanks again.
Amazing! I’ve thrown out a few cast iron skillets because they rust on me and I never knew you would revive them after rusting because, you know, rust = bad. You’ve inspired me to ask my husband for a few cast iron skillets for Christmas! This is super simple and I trust your instruction and judgement!
For future reference- unless there are literal holes in it you can almost always fix a cast iron skillet. Really bad ones require some stuff like electrolysis but theyre almost always restorable
Good stuff man I do the same thing. Always clean it when it’s hot after cooking. Never soak it over night and use salt or baking soda to clean after seasoned. Keep dry and use high smoke temp oil.
I found you on Thanksgiving this past year. It was my first Thanksgiving I was hosting in our home. And you and your recipes made it one to remember. Thanks for this too! I got a cast iron for Christmas and it said "seasoned" and I didn't believe it and I'm glad I didn't 😂
This is exactly how I do mine. Gotta get a clean slate to start with. Awesome video sir!! Came back to say, the explanation of how porous cast iron is, explains a lot. Thanks again.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! I've been looking for a proper way to take care of my pan ever since my mother got me one of my own. Your the Man!!!

That finger trick was the best explanation on how the seasoning bonds to the skillet
Great video, AB. You made this process easy to understand and rather uncomplicated as you always do. Thanks for sharing this one.
Thanks man I have been trying to save my grandma's for almost a month now and this process finally worked! Much appreciated
This couldn’t come at a better time since I’m looking at buying one. Thanks AB!
Buy American made cast iron. Never China.
Go to a thrift store and buy one there!! Already broken in😃
Don’t buy Lodge cast iron, they’re no good. Get a really old one at tag sales or thrift shops.
That’s for the video. I have been throwing my cast iron pans away and buying new ones. Now I can save some money because now I know how to clean them!
Me too. 🤫 😂
😂😂😂😂
Throwing them away? Damn. What a waste.
Hey Everyone!! We smiling too AB! Thanks for this video!!
Lol Thanks Lacey
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB Always Welcome!!
I infuse bacon grease with honey whisky. I season my pan with that. It’s also good (in small amounts) to cook with.
I got my chainmail and stainless steel scrubies from Amazon two days ago. I'm seasoning my old cast iron skillet the real way right now! Thank you, AB!
Great video. I just got a set of iron skillets, and I’m excited to use them. Simple and to the point.
I know this is two years old but I just bought the double handle lodge skillet exactly like yours and sanded it smooth on the inside and I absolutely love it.
Thanks so much for this! I messed mine up and never knew how to bring it back! Now I do! Thanks AB 🙏🏽❤️
Thank you AB for the instructions on how to season a cast iron skillet AB is amazing and very skilled in his cooking skills and I love how clean his kitchen is
Thanks for simplifying this process! I have three that need that exact treatment! Love what you do, Brother! Thanks, again!
This is a process but it’s very satisfying and worth it.
How’d it turn out? I’m doing mine now
That was great.
Thanks a million just bought my first set of cast iron pots and pans this video helped tremendously!!!
This video came right on time!! I was literally trying to figure out everything that you showed! Thank you❤️
Haven't been a cast iron skillet cooker yet but now that I'm ready to be I couldn't think of anyone else's video to learn the tips and tricks from than you brotha, appreciate the explanations.
Literally just bought a cast-iron skillet yesterday, perfect timing 💯 you the man AB 🔥 🐐smoking & grillin from Rhode Island
My wife and I just found an amazing cast iron cauldron! I’m about to fix the seasoning tomorrow, this thing was never used as a pot, it’s flawless.
Thanks for this. Keep up the good content AB.
Yw and enjoy!
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB I will.
dang i really liked seeing the differences between 2, 3 and 4. its was actually noticable.
Thanks so much for posting had flown away so many non-stick frying-pans always go back to my cast iron
AB don't forget when cleaning cast iron the rule is hot pan needs hot water cause cold water in a hot cast iron pan will crack it
So true!!
Thanks for the tip!
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB no problem brother.... your next video should be a bbq inspired smoked spaghetti... I've made it a few times and I'll never have traditional spaghetti again. Lol
WoW, I would've never thought cast iron would crack! Thanks for mentioning that tip!
Thank you sir for the great information.
Huh, I have been avoiding it all this time
@@Crawdoodle exactly!!!
@@healthhollow7218washed my cast iron for the last 35 years and never hurt the cast iron. I don’t let it soak just a quick k wash.
I am new to the whole cast iron world. I seasoned it but what happens when I cook in it and how do I clean the food residue once I make something in it? AB stated to never use soap after seasoning. So, how do I clean it? Thanks so much!
Over the last year I’ve watched at lease 5 vids on this subject. This is the best. Straight forward and wow, what a beautiful finish. Ty
Outstanding video. Showed and described the whole entire process from the very beginning, still managing to show alternatives and considering other possibilities for other people. And don't get me started on how meditative it looks like it is to wipe the grease off and on!
Thanks AB for this demonstrate. I'll have to start using my cast iron again.🔥
:)
Definitely gonna put this video in a playlist. Because my cast iron is struggling!
Thank You. Your process worked better over all of the others I have tried.
I loved your video over all the others I watched. It’s honestly the realest and not over complicated which is what I was looking for.
Thank you for this it is so needed!!!
I’m taking notes right now💜👀
You're so welcome and enjoy!
Cast iron is the greatest kitchen tool
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! I've been looking for a proper way to take care of my pan ever since my mother got me one of my own. Your the Man!!!
As a kid I hated my moms heavy cast iron skillet. Now I have 3.
You're not alone 🤣👏😁
i have 9
