My mom would scrub her cast iron skillets with soap and water, dry them off, wipe them with a lite coat of bacon grease, wipe that down and they were ready for another use on the wood burning stoves. That was way back in the 60s and used them up to the 2000s. The old school people could cook up some food with their kitchen skills and better than the technology in cooking out today.

Ehh you can use soap on a cast iron skillet. Not going to hurt anything. Nothing wrong with just wiping it off with hot water too. The soap thing come from when soaps were made with lye. That stuff would ruin cast iron. But soaps aren’t made with lye any longer.

I'm 62 and still use the first one I bought 40 years ago at a flea market. I do all my cooking in either Cast Iron, Enameled Cast Iron, or a Carbon Steel Wok. I think I have 15 pieces of Cast Iron. Fry potatoes and deep fry French fries when you start cooking and it helps build up seasoning. Also bake cornbread or brownies in them. It helps them become more nonstick. Then it will cook meat without it sticking and make cleaning easier.

Professional soap maker here! Modern detergent will NOT hurt your cast iron. Old fashioned soap was made with no way to tell if lye was left in the soap. That’s why old soap could burn you and strip cast iron. Modern soap is created with chemical testing to make sure the lye is completely absent (it gets used up as it bonds water and oil together, which is aspinification) and turned into soap. Things like cascade aren’t even true soap; it’s detergent, which means it’s synthetic and does not use lye in the process of making it.

Honestly, a bit of soap on a long seasoned skillets is fine... The polymer you create when seasoning is quite resistant and toughens everytime you use your skillet.
Avoid using it on recently seasoned ware I guess, but don't worry about old seasonings, these things will endure

Thanks for the simple straightforward videos. Believe it or not just today I noticed a perfectly sized old cast iron skillet hanging in the shop. I was wondering how difficult it would be to bring it back to life? You made it look simple and easy. After I get it brought back to life I'm going to get rid of the cheap skillets that I have now.

I going to get a lot a flak for this, but you can use dish soap to wash cast iron. Back in the day soap had a lot more lye in it and would ruin the seasoning and your skin. Modern soap is just not strong enough. For example, everyone gets stuff burned on the bottom stainless steel sauce pans, which is basically same stuff that season's a cast iron pan. We all know dish soap won't take that stuff off no matter how long you let it soak. Besides, restaurants have to wash their pans in soap, but after doing so they should be oiled.

Get the skillet warm and scrub the outside like AB showed you. If that doesn't work, you can put the cast iron in your oven and run the Self Cleaning cycle. Then start with step one washing them and follow the rest of the steps he has shown.

Yo AB, I did this yesterday and did all the steps but the pan was still kinda "grainy" lookin today. Well, I put a mf Ribeye on dat bih this morning. Afterwards, I hit it with a water boil, scrubbed the residue off with salt and reapplied oil and this bih looks better than it did after the 4th 1hr bake. So if yall in the comments reading this, you may need to cook some beef or pork and then you'll have a clean black look.

If you can’t use dish soap on your pan, you haven’t seasoned it correctly. Modern dish soap doesn’t have any lye in it. Correctly seasoned means the oil went through polymerization which is very hard and will be far too difficult for dawn to remove without extra help.
