  • A return trip to this alpine valley.
Summer conditions for the first day of autumn. Very low rivers and dry grass. An overnighter at the lovely Poulter Hut with a before dinner trot up to Lake Minchin. Lots of native birdlife around. Thanks to the pest control work in the upper Poulter.
If you enjoy back country mountain bike adventures and trail running, this is the combo for you.

Great and helpful. I'm really keen to do this but quite a lot older, but looks doable, although I might fast walk your running bits!

I'm glad you enjoyed this wee film. Don't worry about age, it's a route that rewards determination! Probably best ridden in summer/autumn, as the conditions are nicer on the body, and you can carry less gear. If going all the way to the nice Poulter Hut, be aware that the Poulter River crossing just before the hut can be risky after a few days of rain or snow melt. The Casey 2 is a great hut and a good fall back spot if needed. Trust-Poulter Hut in between, is an older hut and colder with an open fire and less insulation.
It's only a couple of km's up the river bed from where I stashed my bike to the Poulter Hut and about 4km through nice bush, to Lake Minchin, well worth the trip if you're a fisherman or to hear/see the Whio or even Kiwi. Karerera often nest near the Poulter too. And then there's the Kakariki! Whole valley is well worth the effort!

Wouldn't be more adventurous if you hike?🤔
Unless you're gonna cheat and bike!🙃

It's one of the few backcountry routes in a National Park open to MTB's up to where I left my bike. The trail is pretty dull on your feet, but fast and fun on the bike. I tend to hike what I can't run or ride.
