      You could straighten it out with a curved shape so some riders could still land high on the right leaning like a semi wall ride. I imagine this just means straightening the exit and leaving the start of the landing as is then extending the catchment berm to hook into it further down trail.

    Firstly Luke…your production, filming and editing are next level dude. Your trail building skills are bloody brilliant. Keep up the great content, now my suggestion is some sort of timber feature…. Stepped up landing that slopes back down to the trail. Like a 45 degree wedge that slopes down…. That could be cool and less dirt.

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Jules! I had a good time getting those slow mo shots at the start of this video. A stepped up wooden lander would look so good! I can imagine I would bust a rim on it though hahah. I've flat spotted a few on step ups before!

      @Jbjmtb 2 года назад +1

      @@cutlaps you could even just do a mellow ish timber wall ride, so you could just roll up onto it or hop on when you get comfortable. Like 60 or 70 degrees. Not so mellow it’s boring, but not so steep…. You’d shit yourself 🤔

    I would get rid of the jump and make it double roller if some people want air and have a high speed/ low speed feature down the trail so they can choose.

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +2

      Hmm that's an interesting idea. The second roller probably wouldn't need to be very big as you wouldn't be getting much heigh off the roller. Just enough to smooth out the landing.

    • @Thematty635
      @Thematty635 2 года назад

      Double rollers are sick, hell you could even stretch the second roller and give it a second landing to make like a "dragons back" triple. Triple for the mega speed demons and rollers for the chillers.

    GREAT story in this episode, the way you shared something not working out (I can totally relate) and then turned it around from dull to “please, work please work, please work” music build up and excitement was super entertaining thanks for putting on a good show! I’d say don’t think of the current feature as a hip, but a semi-wall ride with a slight hip and then, like you said extend/raise the catchment berm, and remove some dirt at the end of the landing exit and it should improve.
    I feel your pain of trying to fit a hipped feature into a trail that is already in place. Hips almost need to be built at the end of the trail and determine the direction of the trail instead of following a trail. I’ve built awkward hips doing that too.
    I think it could still work as a hip! If you split the trail off to the left where the hip wants to go, then you could commit to landing more hipped. You could have a secret line that jumps off the catchment berm over the natural brush and lands in the natural direction the hip wants to exit, then looking at the map the trail curves back that way to secretly connect back on. When I say secret I’m referring to @0:35 where you already have a beautiful hidden connection back onto the old trail from last episodes work.

    I can’t wait for this next high speed feature. My guess is a wall ride just before where the digger is parked.

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад

      Thanks Matt! Glad you enjoyed the emotional roller coaster haha. Having the trail split there is a pretty cool idea and it would be a fun way to do it. I will have to scope out if there is a gap through the trees in the correct place for it. My other idea would be to flatten the dirt that I stacked at the top of the landing. Cut out the end of it a bit more and that way you can hit it as a straight jump that you don't have to shift your weight the opposite direction to the berm. It would be easier to hit it faster as well. But I think I'm going to build the next feature because that will change the berm. So I need to wait to see what I am dealing with. A secret trail would be pretty cool.
      Good guess for the next feature, you will have to wait for the next episode to see if its correct!

    • @mattspen
      @mattspen 2 года назад

      @@cutlaps I can totally relate!
      You have me curious now, sounds like the next feature is closer than I thought, at the catch berm and fast 🤔. My wild guess would be a tall wooden feature (teeter, arch, tall on/off) that shortcuts through the woods. (Since the trail curves right then left, it would shortcut to the end of the next left turn).

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад

      It's a feature you know I have wanted to build for a long time and I think I have the space and speed I want to make it work. Maybe...

  • @ned_and_cazz
    @ned_and_cazz 2 года назад +3

    Maybe drop a rock in there for a nose bonk or tail tap. If you make it a slower tech jump the catch berm will be fine

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +1

      That would be cool! Obviously I wouldn't be nose bonking it (would definitely go over the bars) but would be cool to see someone else do that. Only issue is the next feature (if all goes to plan) needs a lot of speed. So I need to make this jump work at higher speeds.

    • @mattspen
      @mattspen 2 года назад +1

      Nose bonk rock is an awesome idea, I have yet to find a well placed rock for one. @cutlaps a roller is a great place to start learning a nose bonk (basically air the roller then as soon as you lift off push down then immediately back up while in the air.) Im still learning them but I assume a rock bonk would be the same just bugger air and adjusted timing. (I want to get to the point where I air to the left of the rock and whip my front tire to the right to bonk it)

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +1

      @@mattspen oh yeah good tips. I think I need to get comfortable in the air and popping first. Think I'm going to start work on a small jump trail out in grass field when Tashi is down. That way I can actually practice without having to worry about hitting a tree.

    Love the show and I'm learning loads. I'm up the road at Sussex Inlet and building a trail in the hills, only trouble is the sand. I kid you not that it would be 95% sand and sand like the beach with about an inch of soilish leaf litter. I have managed to get help from a Facebook group and the ideas are so helpful. I'm using everything from hessian bags to broken roof tiles and concrete to pieces of carpet, anything to make sand firm. Oh yeah quick set and importing clay as well as a heap of timber jumps , berm walls and drop offs. When it's done I will invite you up for a day at the dunes. For your dilemma I would suggest a step up on the right so when you come down the step you are ready to hit a berm where the track goes right. You could build the rollers bigger then and pump more speed into the berm. ✌️👊 Peace

    Hi, cutlass! you can make it just a normal landing. It will be a lot of work, but I see some people in the background so I'm guessing that it is a public bike park. if you are doing that plz make a little berm after for the speed. it will be better, also make the lip a bit steeper for more air. to get more speed when you land, make the landing steeper than 45 degrees to gain more speed. also, I saw that you want some more jumps on the trail, you can just make the rollers wider and then take a flat rock or something for the lip. then the end of the roller will be the landing. I hope that you will do this. the trail will be more fun. I see that the trail is quite long and skinny, on your next trail build I recommend that you make a longer gap between the berms on each end so it will be a longer trail for more fun and higher speed. And one last thing. I recommend you also build some tech on the trail. the trail will take more time, so then you have longer downhill and the same uphill.

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад

      Thanks for all the advice! This section has changed a bit now because of the feature I decided to build after it. You need all the speed you can get so I have decided to forget about the jump. Which is ok because there are plenty of other places on the trail for jumps. I really like the flat rock idea but sadly I don’t have any rocks like that on my property. I’m not sure if you watch @PhilsWorld but he has been building his own trail as well and his property is covered with big flat rocks that are perfect to build jumps with. Always gets me jealous haha. This trail I want to keep pretty tight with lots of fast turns and jumps but I have some other trails planned that will be longer with a lot more space in between berms and there is also some great technical areas that will be fun. I think you would enjoy that trail. I just need to build it haha. Here is a video I did that has a full top to bottom run of the current trail, ruclips.net/video/9P2CH4PNaqQ/видео.html.

I need to stop work on this trail and start work on a jump line out in the paddock so I can actually learn to jump. Then I can build cool features like this through the trees.

      You would be amazed at how intuitive that type of jump is. Depending on where the jumping landing is will dictate on how much distance of airtime. But the further up and out you go will make for more of a jump. But jumping is definitely something that needs to be worked on. Good luck with your air time!

    The thumbnail on this one was on point. Your 3D work is brilliant!
    Must agree re the rake-hoe. I used to work summer forest fire crew and they were a regular for making fire breaks. Great tool!
    Was the shot flowing over the jumps cable cam, drone or just gimbal?
    Thoughts re the jump:
    1: dig out the inside of the next corner and stack it into a steep berm you can rip around to stay on the track.
    2: make it more of just a straight jump by digging out the right of the hipped landing and stacking it on the top of the landing. Then just have that section stay straight a while longer before joining back on.
    Keep up the good work. I appreciate the quick succession in which the last few episodes dropped 😍
    Sam.

    • @mattspen
      @mattspen 2 года назад +2

      I like the way you described part 1 digging the inside, you can see it kind of acts like a bump. I would try that first (with a bigger catchment berm from the dirt) and it might be all it needs? 🙌🏼

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Sam. Thought I would give the 3d arrows a try for the thumbnail. I'm not sure if there is an easy way of doing them but I think my way worked out pretty good.
      I almost called it a fire rake as well. That's cool you worked summer forest fire crew.
      The shot flowing over the jumps was actually me just running with the gopro on a selfie stick. No gimbal needed. It kinda looks like I sped up the footage but that was untouched. GoPro's inbuilt stabelisation is next level!
      Good ideas regarding the jump.
      I'm thinking number 2 is the way to go. I don't think I would even need to have the section stay straight for any longer. If you don't have to position your weight to the left for the landing you can be getting ready in the air for the berm to the right.

      Yup it's my first go at building but I have watched a lot of other RUclips trail building vidoes haha. And you learn a lot when you actually get started. Theres a good book called "Trail Solutions, IMBAs Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack". It has lots of information about how to build great MTB trails. Yeah thats how I imagined it, but the way the landing heads right into the corner so it doesn't flow properly. Think I need to tweak it a bit more. The take off feels great.

    As the angled landing isn't working, how about turning it to a straight step-up?

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I think that is the way to go! I'm not sure how much I will step it up though because that will require more dirt but I think I can cut into the angled slope to straighten it out. Thanks for watching and your suggestion it's really helpful.

  • @aleho1
    @aleho1 2 года назад

    You need to give the lip of the hip more pop and then change the angle of the take off to spit you up to the right, you aren’t giving it enough degrees of angle on the curve, give it almost a little bit of vert (well not vert, but you know what I mean with the angle)
    You want height not speed, remember when you are building that you don’t make the rider go to straight without enough pop to give them height, which also allows you to switch the riders angle much easier.

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  2 года назад +1

      That is some solid advice! This jump has pretty much been scraped now because the corkscrew feature that came after it requires a lot of speed (and dirt that I borrowed from the landing). I think I will build something like this again somewhere else on the trail and I will make the lip steeper like you said. Thanks for your help.

    • @aleho1
      @aleho1 2 года назад

      @@cutlaps bro, as a fellow Aussie, it is a pleasure! And…. If you create more pop, you can actually have landings that are dodgy because of how you wash off speed with height, which lends to being able to have tighter landing spots Co
      Pared where the take off is, and you can have more control over how you land when you go up more than you get projected forwards without height

    Sick features man, If you wanted you could shape the kicker into a shark fin going left then have the landing curve back right on the left side of the trail so it reconnects with the trail immediately. Shark fins are not the easiest to do though. Hope I win the t-shirt and im already stoked for ep14 🔥

      Cheers dude. That would be very cool. Thanks Owen. It's actually my Dads property that I am building on. About 160 acres, so plenty of room for trails. I have about 120 metres or 400ft of elevation to work with. And multiple valleys to explore. The slope varies so much but it's pretty perfect for MTB trails. It probably looks a lot more flat on video but there isn't anywhere on the trail that you struggle to get speed.

    • @cutlaps
      @cutlaps  8 месяцев назад

      Oh sweet I will check it out for sure. Hmm I struggle with tight berms because I am very tall so I am on an extra large bike. So I prefer to build my berms a bit bigger. Tight berms can really kill speed and flow. But if it has to be tight for a reason than you could try and make them steeper so you can really lean over and rip around it.
