The experiment involved launching millions of tiny copper needles into Earth's orbit, forming a ring around the planet. These needles were meant to reflect radio signals, providing a reliable communication system in case Soviet forces interfered with existing methods.
While the experiment initially showed promise, the needles dispersed unevenly, and advancements in satellite technology soon made the project unnecessary. Project West Ford remains a remarkable example of early space experimentation and raises questions about its environmental impact.
