  • It’s confirmed - Enzo Fernández is a Chelsea player! But is the €121 million purchase from Benfica worth it?
Today we’re doing a deep-dive into the strengths and weaknesses of the Argentinian midfielder. He made big waves at the World Cup, winning the tournament and picking up the best young player award.
But what does Enzo bring to the table offensively and defensively? Could he become one of the best midfielders in the world? And how will can Chelsea get the best out of him?
It should be a fun one :)

    Enzo career path so far:
-Played as a solo holding midfielder in DyJ: won the Copa Sudamericana (Europa league equivalent, but winning it with a Getafe type team)
-CM with DyJ: won the Recopa Sudamericana vs Palmeiras (equivalent of beating Liverpool in the European Supercup)
-Number 8 for River (Argentina league title breaking personal records for goals and assists)
-CM for Benfica (won him a €120 million transfer, besides leaving Benfica at the lead in Portugal and CL)
-Solo holding midfielder with Argentina: World Cup winner and Golden Boy.
The kid is just a winner anywhere on the pitch.

Spot on! I've seen every single match Enzo has played this season (since I am a Benfica supporter), and i must say you did an excellent analysis of the player. Some things are obvious by watching a few argentina matches at the WC but his defensive flaws were more evident in some Benfica matches than at the world cup. So you had to do your homework. And so you did.
Since he's going to England, where the game is faster and more physical, I would add that he lacks a bit of pace. He's not slow per say, but in a perfect world he would be a bit faster and taller (his aerial game is not his forte as you metioned). His fair price would have been 80 million euros but the fresh world cup performances and the fact that Benfica didnt want to sell him in january inflated the price. I am mad for losing the player, but less now after learning about his behaviour forcing the move at all costs. Benfica would have a chance reaching the semis of the champions league but now is far tougher since we didnt replace him.

a year and a half ago he was with Defensa, Gallardo sent him there one year before that, imo to forge the incredible mentality and willpower he has nowadays. for Defensa he was playing CDM, being their best player and getting europa league equivalent on a club that has played 90% of their history on second or lower divisions. Moved back to River Plate and became the best midfielder in the league, playing CAM and CM on a 3 midfield, getting 10 goals 7 assists on his last 6 months at the club, winning the league. Later moved to benfica, Played 4 games as a CM on a 3, scored 3 goals, then moved to Left side of a double pivot, got first on CL group with PSG and Benfica, and left benfica first of their league, always being their main star, with absurd progression, creative and passing numbers. For Argentina, had to play single pivot again because of team's necesities, not his favorite position anymore since he's a CM at heart, and was Argentina's best midfielder, world champion, and best young player of the WC. He is an incredible player, supper complete, with absurd stats and footballing iq, leadership traits, and that can adapt to any scenario and position extremely fast.

If you want to see what enzo can do when he plays advanced, I seriously recommend you watch those last 15 minutes.

This is why I prefer Caicedo over Enzo. Of course, the dream is to have both Enzo and Caicedo in the team but Chelsea no.6 are pretty much non-existent right now. Who's he gonna pair with in the middle park? Mount? Kovacic? He's okay but still doesn't offer that much defensively compared to Kante. RLC? Gallagher? Zakaria is the best second option but he's also out because of injury. If you ask me, I'd probably bring one of their stacked CB as a converted CDM like Chelsea did before with David Luiz (the likes of Fofana, Chalobah or Badiashile). Maybe not for every match but against a top side where you need more defensive cover or to see out a game.
