On the subject of working with ancestors who you didn't get along with: I know someone whose dead father was abusive. Whenever his mother gets sick, he calls on his father to protect her, saying that his father owes her protection after what he put her through. Idk if that's the "proper" way to do things, but it works!

On the subject of bringing an offering: It reminds me of my childhood - you never went to visit (family, friends, elders) without bringing a gift. Usually that was like a coffee cake, or a bottle of wine, or a dish, or at least some flowers. That concept of hospitality, and that even if your host has nothing, your presence isn't a burden is a good thing to remember in any age or any relationship.

A friend and I that were talking about this yesterday, were having a debate on whether or not anybody that wasn’t blood related, belong on an ancestor altar.
While, I do believe that there are some hard and fast rules with our magic and rituals and spell crafting and technique, etc., I also feel like this is one issue where it truly is up to the practitioner or even just the person creating the altar, as a sacred space.
I have a friend, who, after my own brother died, was as close to me, as my own brother was, and I loved him like one. He was protective, and kind to me in life, and I know that in Spirit, he still watches over me and does what he can … it felt wrong to leave him off of an altar, where I go to honor and connect and seek protection or guidance, of those that have gone before me.
But, like I said, I’m of the mindset sometimes rules need to be respected (ie waking up roots when you’re working conjure, not every ingredient can be substituted and it is not just “your intention “
So hearing you affirm, that you also don’t believe that it’s a place just for blood relatives , really is a timely message for me to get. I’m going to share this with the
friend that I was discussing it with.
    Thanks again! you’re a lovely soul❤

I am so glad you resonated with this! The conversation of whether or not ancestors are biological or not is always a controversial topic. People view this so differently... At times, I feel like my soul is so much more important than my physical body. And so, people that I resonate with on a deep soul level are going to give me more of that "ancestral" feeling than some of my biological ancestors whom I feel distant from. It really does depend on the practitioner!

The ancestral course I did, likened the ancestors to yes your own lineage but also everyone that you have grown up with and known in life, has had some meaning to you. They went on to talk about how even if you've read a book that inspired you, the author could be considered as the same. I think it's lovely you included them, and the only exception anyway would be if you were creating a space for your lineage alone.

I’ve loved Helen Keller since I read her autobiography when I was in 5th Grade, over 50 years ago. She is one bad ass woman! I’ll bet she would make a great Archetype Ancestor (Ancestor Archetype?) to work with on my journey towards recovering from long-standing health issues. Having done a lot of genealogical research decades ago, I can think of several individuals in my family history I would like to get to know and work with. As a 60+ woman of Celtic heritage, I’ve been feeling a call to get more familiar with the spiritual traditions of those ancestors. And since witchcraft is intricately woven throughout Celtic roots, naturally I’ve been gradually lead to an awakening of my own Inner Witch. I really enjoy your channel and your content, please excuse the redundancy. Do you work one-on-one with clients?

Love the idea of acts of service as a form of ancestor veneration... also, living life well as a sustainable way to venerate.
I'm not sure how I feel about ancestors in general being on a higher moral plane but do appreciate your POV and will consider it food for thought. I have had my concerns about my ancestors not being pleased with my practice (or happy about being invited into my practice), so this is a freeing perspective.
I regularly ask my well ancestors to help guide my divination work, but haven't specifically asked them questions about themselves via Tarot, for instance. I'm curious how you would interpret the cards in that context. Perhaps that could be touched on in a future video.
Can't wait for the dedication ceremony video and more on ancestor veneration and magic in the future! Thank you, Ivy!🪶🍁🐾🍄🍂

The question about ancestors being on a higher moral plane is always a sticky conversation! For the longest time, I felt the same way as you, so I can definitely understand your perspective on that.
And, you should definitely try to have a tarot conversation with them sometime! I would LOVE to do a video on that, but I'll have to figure out how to structure it since it's such a subjective experience. Maybe some example spreads would be helpful...

Great video. I have zero interest in working with my direct biological ancestors (long nasty story). Instead I do work with the ancient Goddess of my ancestral lines’ original lands. She actually came to me when I was first really wrestling with the whole ancestor veneration issue....She was the one who told me She could be my ancestor. I honestly hadn’t even considered calling out to deity at all.
I suppose in a way She could be seen as an archetypal ancestor & this is how I had thought about deities but She has made her presence clearly known so I’ve had to change my beliefs as She most definitely appears to be very “real”. Hope that makes sense.
Just wanted to leave this comment in case someone new starting ancestor work actually has a very unexpected deity turn up 😄
