Time Lapse of a Driveway Peel & Pave

- New driveway installed by Ottawa Pavemasters on June 5, 2015. The whole process took about 3 hours but I've used time lapse to speed that up to just over 7 minutes. The driveway had begun to fail with large cracks, holes, and areas that were only about 1/2" thick when the old driveway was pulled up. You can see the failure of the driveway on the right hand side just above the wet spots on the asphalt. Rather than having it get worse through another Canadian winter, it was replaced. The cost was around $2400 CAD.
everyone needs to hire these guys... they put down an entirely new driveway in under 10 minutes!
zachary taylor ikr how the fuck are they so fast really impressive
it took about 3 hours, this is just time lapsed.
and how much time u need to get the joke, @dan :)
DanielLovesBmw joke
zachary taylor it was a time lapse
I cant be the only one who thinks the new driveway wasnt needed yet right?
Crack sealing and sealcoat would have been fine, they probably upsold him
Yeah Absolutely Its just waste of money..
Resealing it would have been cheaper and made it look brand new.
So... No one read the discretion?
Its just the top coat but this wasn't done correctly. After cleaning there supposed to spray a hot sticky liquid so the old and new tar bond together.
I pave for a living and can honestly say that these guys do very clean and professional work. Good equipment operators too. Very little handwork needed
I've never paved but I've broken up plenty of your guys' work and I would be very happy to have them do mine
They scammed the owner. instead of fresh reseal, they got him to replace it. The fact you thinking good is the reason your comonay doesn't do as well as others each year. Scammed companies will die.
I supervised for a year or so, they did a good job
Fantastic job. It looks almost exactly the same as the other driveway!
But with less character lol
Lmfao yeah really. Totally uneeded.
They need to give that bobcat driver a raise. He had some mad skills...
manlyminnesotan even if you don’t make a ton operating one they are like the most fun thing in the world
I run one every day, also lube and power wash them too. I’m 16 and I only make $10 an hour.
deleted acc Not bad money for that age mane.
@@deletedacc5728 may I ask what the minimum wage is where your from?
I'm not trying to be rude
@@captainchaos4896 sorry I’m just now seeing these. It’s $9.65. I make $11 an hour now but this Friday I’ll be asking for $13 or more. I work at a landscape yard and I do anything and everything. Pulling orders, running the bobcats and loading customers with trees and bulk materials. Loading trucks for deliveries, and way more to even begin to explain. The place would be nothing without me (and I’m not trying to be cocky at all) and they’re paying other people way more. I’m practically a foreman, I have 6 kids that report to me, and $11 an hour isn’t cutting it especially when I’m working 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week. Good hours and overtime but I have no time for a social life. I get that I’m 17, and they can pay me whatever they want, but when I do way more than the grown adults there, I know my worth and feel that I deserve more. Edit: I forgot to mention I’ve been there 3 years, and haven’t been late once, and have called in sick literally one day. So I’m dependable. And am I wrong for wanting more?
The amount of staff and the heavy equipment used, I can tell that this was rather expensive.

@@bdc211 asphalt is what they laid. The blacktop is that thin coat shit they seal with that tar shit. eventually that thin layer of blacktop eventually flakes off an looks like shit. We get ours done every 3-4 years . They laid down a real road on the driveway not no weak sealer blacktop.. the shitty blacktop looks like water flowing out the tube that shit will eventually bust up as it gets driven on an parked on. The good blacktop is super thick n rubbery .
@@bdc211 ooo i see ya blacktop for us is the thin layered stuff / tar . ashpalt is like legit road like they layed in this video for the driveway. i believe they just lay that and call it done. no blacktop / tar will be needed to seal it. its just like driving on a road.. an concrete to us is just the light colored smooth surface like on a sidewalk for example
@@DrunkenVtec Less than I would have thought👍
I was gonna say 2500 bucks

So is everyone else on RUclips
ahahahaha
On RUclips there ARE no limits.
I laughed out loud on that one. Thanks
Interesting. Here in Europe almost nobody has asphalted their driveway. We use mostly concrete blocks in a variety of shapes and colors so you can basically have a simple design or create a piece of art. Choice is yours and there are alsmost unlimited options to choose from. The main benefits are one - it holds up many decades before it even shows signs of age and when it does you just wash it off with a pressure washer and they are all like new again (except you ordered a specific color that bleached out but you can apply paint and get it back to day one again) and two - if you change your mind you can always sell whatever you got left when lifting the blocks and replace them with new ones and three - in bright summer daylight you don't smell anything. Asphalt will always leak odours and not really healthy fumes while concrete is just that. No matter the temperature. A side benefit - if you manage do damage a few of them you simply replace them one by one and you are done. Recycling is not a problem. If you don't plan on selling you can turn them in at your local disposal place and they get back into the system so one day they will become something new again. No hate here, just telling about some other place how it works :)
lost on youtube again.... Anyone Else? lol
Cade Lucero
totally!
yeah, what in gods name am i doing here...
I’m not, I search this stuff. I find it satisfying lol.
I'm gonna get off my phone now and do something worth my time 😂
I am
So.. what was wrong with the driveway to begin with?
I wondered the same... at first i thought they were going to pave with bricks to match the sidewalk... but nope... asphalt
Well you can clearly see the bottom half is a bit lighter than the top half due to sun damage perfect reason to put new asphalt
Marc Joe huh?
It's was too thick...he wanted it only 1/2 deep.
Jake The Dog hardly .. waste $$$ if u ask me
What was the purpose of that black stuff that the first truck deposited, that was then ignored and taken by the bobcat?
Likely leftover cold mixture from the previous day's work. It goes along with the torn up material to be ground up, heated, and then relaid as new asphalt. (asphalt is about 90-95% granular material, and about 5-10% asphalt "goo", and is almost 100% recyclable into new paving surface)
Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to explaiN!
MrTemjin asphalt is made up of dried aggregate and oil. they get mixed while neing just over 300 degrees. theres a couple different classes of it depending on aggregate size. thats all it is. i could explain it all but will give you the very short version.
Vern C thats not all true. id say asphalt is about 30% recycled, and the "goo" is called tack. pretty much just tar. recycled asphalt dosent last long. i pave highways not driveways like these guys. lol
973 motooguy - The "goo" is bitumen. The term asphalt is another term for bitumen, but "asphalt" is commonly used as the term for the finished road surface comprised of granular material and bitumen. To be correct, the term that should be used is asphalt concrete.
I'm not sure what you mean by "about 30% recycled". I've copied a reference from Wickipedia below.
According to industry surveys conducted annually by the Federal Highway Administration and the National Asphalt Pavement Association, more than 99% of the asphalt removed each year from road surfaces during widening and resurfacing projects is reused as part of new pavements, roadbeds, shoulders and embankments
I really enjoyed watching the great team works of these workers and how they paid attention to details. A job well done.
Nice job but i don't really see the necessitiy of the new driveway. The old one looked good. Some minor damages but still in a good shape. And your new driveway looks exactly the same as the old one....I mean if you would have chosen some natural stones, but you went for the same one you had
balalunga1 yeah you are right he should have had it done the way you want it right?, because you live in the house and have to see it everyday, and you are the one who'd have to pay for it right?
Jesus Christ! Are you always so sensitive? No need to cry
That was the same thing I thought. I was looking for the pre-existing damage as that Bobcat was destroying the driveway. I was so confused.
it was a waste of money....the drive was fine before....it just needed some minor work and some sealer.
obviously was much worse than you see in video repairing will just make it worse
Imagine doing that with hand tools.. machinery is amazing and under appreciated
The tool makes the job!
Um no. It's not underappreciated. It is very much appreciated in fact.
This combined with the King of The Hill theme extended opened in another tab just works so well.
Jeez if this guy thought he needed a new driveway, he should come see mine
Talking $$$how much did you shell out for the drive
Yes the driveway appeared to be In good shape but possibly there was water issues causing floods for puddles holding water that freeze in cold weather... take a few slips in the winter break a few bones the doctor would charge more than the paver or somebody else will have their lawyer get more if they pull you to think outside the box you dumb dumbs
You have a driveway? Nice!
One man working, four men holding up shovels! Ain’t much but it’s honest work
Those guys run a honest and fair company. Looks like they knew what they were doing and definitely didn't cut corners on anything. On a side note:: nice looking driveway!!
Honest & fair??? If that was the case they would've saved these people serious money with just a re seal?
I wont even ask how much that costs!!! The amount of workers, the equipment, machines, materials, amazing.
You shouldn't have to ask since it's already in the bloody description.
0:40 Why they dump the gravel just to scoop it back up?
I’m willing to bet that what they dumped was leftover hot mix (asphalt) from the last job they were in that day. They dumped it and reloaded it with the freshly peeled out driveway to keep it from setting up in the truck bed. It’s too dark to be stone, even recycled. I could be wrong but that’s my guess
@@knuttsackjones3094 That is exactly right. its no good when it cools down so you have to send it back to be recycled back into fresh asphalt.
The truck needed to take a shyt! So it dumped!
its prob leftover from last job going onto dump truck. probably do that for each job. black top is 99.9% recyclable i think.
I think these time lapse videos are the most satisfying thing I've seen
talk about some mad skid steer skills nicely done by that operator
Nice to see that there are still people out there that do it correctly....and do a good job!
the driver of that bobcat got skill mane!
Like Gucci?
Amazing recommendation RUclips. The kind of videos you want to see at 1 am
Nice to see them rework the sub straight that's what caused the old one to fail over time usually it settles and cracks the pave
crapper1 sub base could be bad making causing it to heave this was just a grade n pave can't guarantee it will not crack again without a complete dig out but I hope for the best the home owner
You mean substrate.
I don't compliment other operators often but that guy was like butter.
The man on the Bobcat is "Worth the Money!"
True professional's. Looks like this company takes pride in there work. Bob Cat operator was a pro
Don't you guys just love a dubble ad no skip at the end of the video!
These ads are getting out of control now. I watched a shotgun video the other day, but before the video played I had to sit through a 15 second tampon ad.

@@loslewis950 No that's something that anti-corporate/monopoly people see

Far from it !!!

Maybe you have a hidden interest in asphalt driveway paving?
Damn this homeowner was all up in the cheerios! 🤣

Great upload. Glad there was no annoying music added. 👏 👏 👏
Why is this in my recommend ?
the youtube overlord knows that you leave your driveway and walk/drive/bus on asphalt to work everyday, therefore it recommended you this video
because your name is angel garcia and are probably a blue collar worker that does this type of job....youtube knows, youtube gives. dont ask questions, just consume. =)
Because its called "timelapse" which is a really popular search word.
because you click shit
Angel Garcia because you're gay.
Nice Job Gents. Roll guy did not not miss! Smooth Bobcat!
These are the guys you say, I need a new roof, and they build you a new house! Dear lord! A sealing job would have been just fine. Of well! It's not my bank account! Lol...
Guys look pro. But was it really needed..
Most folks don't even know they should Seal Coat their drives....
If you read the full description it explains why it needed to be done
Skid steers are sooo awesome! Look at that work horse go!
Great watch we also do basement digouts in only 10 minutes as well !
Bobcat drivers got skills
the peeling part is probably the most satisfying thing ive ever watched
Ahh, I wanted to see the finished driveway after it cooled and kids started drawing with chalk on it! :)
Always nice to watch professionals at work
India need these machines and skilled labour. your country is so developed.
Jaspreet singh soor have you ever seen Dutch road construction? Now that is developed!
+Ayia 063 You're talking about the auto brick laying machines eh? Pretty sweet stuff.
The Wandering Albatross ya those are pretty cool
Well if you really think about it, all this does is save time and its much more expensive. I'm sure in rural towns in the Midwest probably don't do this method, more than likely they'll use their hands
thatamerican550 No, small Midwest towns hire contractors with bigger versions of these machines to pave their roads.
So enjoyable to watch.
That small bulldozer made it look so easy breaking up old flooring. Normally it would be men using sledgehammers or jackhammers.
Question, why did they dump tar on top of old flooring in beginning before breaking it up?
Looks professionally done. Thanks for sharing.
old asphalt too cold to be used so they need to dump it
peeling up old asphalt is so satisfying
Shooting the breeze and working at the same time - how wonderful it is.
A new driveway in 3 Hours? Not bad, not bad 🤘😎👍🍻
The guys with the shovels are just in the bloody way!
The guy in the bobcat has some serious skill
Thank you for another interesting video, Mike. Stay safe!
Yes the driveway had minor issues. But was it in need to be replaced? Nope.
Very professional. The bobcat operator is great. The crew constantly applies "good housekeeping" i.e keeping the area clean. Great stuff.
Those guys works really really fast, I am impressed
The first 30 seconds (of the guys standing around),I thought I was watching The City of Chicago workers.,
We have concrete driveways, the only time they need replaced is if they were not done correctly in the first place. Maybe after 100 years or so. But a properly laid concrete driveway won't have to be replaced in most people's lifetimes. So glad we don't have stinky asphalt here. We used to have it when I was a kid in MO. All I remember was the street getting soft and sticky when it got hot outside.
There are pros and cons to each. Me personally I'm like you, I prefer poured concrete. They can last many decades longer than asphalt. The only problem is it is more expensive per square foot.
You can see their "FULL COMMITMENT TO A QUALITY JOB" in their actions when at 0.58 THEY THREW their trash (cups and drink holder) on your driveway, then it was scooped it up and mixed it into the asphalt they hauled off.
That stuff was dust or thrown away after they were done with it. Use a little common sense or go work construction for a year. People like you wouldn't last in the business for a month lol.
Holy crap that took a serious turn lmao
Low-class remark
My Dad was a Seabee in the U.S. Navy and was in charge of an asphalt plant at the nearby base. Many an evening was spent by me as a teenager chiseling the stuck asphalt off Dad's boots before giving them a good shine. Now whenever I smell hot asphalt I think of those days.
0:37 he gon pick that up??
Great job !! I would have let the stone settle for some time 3 weeks or so , but that's how u do it.
I could smell the asphalt through the screen...
Yep. They say it causes cancer.
wwaynemcg ashphalt is in cigarettes ofcourse it causes cancer
The bobcat driver got some skills!
Good job guys!!!💪💪💪💪💪 I blacktop for a living and y'all did a good job!!!💪💪💪
So what was wrong with the old one?
I guess when people are rich they just start replacing shit for nothing. Assholes, my driveway is nothing but Rocks
@@MikeMikewaz How is this guy an ASSHOLE because he spends HIS MONEY the way HE WANTS!!!! Instead of being jealous and bitching about someone who has worked for what he has, how about you get off your ass and EARN A NEW DRIVEWAY YOURSELF!!! What a FUCKTARD you are!!!!
I recently got a quote on repaving my driveway and they quoted me $6000! From what I see in your video, my driveway is narrower but slightly longer than yours. Overall, the cost should be similar. I thought their estimate was way too high, so I just bought some asphault patch from the store and fixed it myself.
with a 700 square foot size minimum, the jobcost should be near $4,200 plus hst. At $2500 that company made little to No profit! And their process was well done!

Deep and perfect work
That guy can really run that skid loader...WOW!!!
I love that there’s no annoying music
I haven't ever done residential work, but I am shocked at how thin that asphalt was.
That's why paving contractors love residential work... no inspections.
Don’t trust a paving company with pointed shovels and that starts at the beginning to dig
Haha
This driveway was in excellent condition prior about 10 times nicer than mine! Not perfect, but definitely not in need of replacement.

yibes Exactly! Why is this so oddly satisfying to watch? lol
Brian Sierzega I don't know I've been watching mowing time lapses for the last hour than found this its just as satisfying I don't understand why tho.....
Good work men, I can tell the man in the white shirt is the boss because hes doing all the easy work lol
Yeah...the "easy" work, like hiring help and training every summer, checking jobs on the weekends, paying for machinery, insurance, worker's comp blah, blah, blah being the "boss" is far from the easiest job I saw there !
In my opinion the old driveway was fine.
the person driving the thing that peels it off makes it look as easy as doing that with a big hand like damn they’re in control
Owner with more money than common sense. A perfect candidate for a patching job! Why in the hell remove sound asphalt?
what was wrong with the driveway ?
I feel so satisfied watching this
This job was so clean and well done......
If they used the Binford 1000, they would have been done way faster.
I don't think so, Tim
Looks like these guys do a very thorough job . Dam nice to see ! Good on ya
That skid steer operator should be making 40 bucks an hour............
$120.00 for the job then? (3 hours??) How about the other guys and materials. I'll bet this was a $7,000 job for three hours work.
Q; why does the truck drop a heap of gravel/bitchumen to then just dig it up straight away when they lift the driveway at the start?
They were cleaning old material left over from another job from the dump truck. The bobcat scooped it up and dumped with the rest of the driveway.
73Soundman73 thanks mate.
What rich people do? They break down a perfectly fine driveway, rebuild it, spend couple of thousand dollars, post the video in youtube, get a million views, and earn back the spent money.
Did you read the description?
dude that cat ate that whole brownie by itself
I love the people commenting *more money than brains*, the same people who *can't read the video description where it said what's wrong with the driveway*
_Irony_
Justin R My exact thoughts reading all these comments of people saying they can't "see" any damage, like they have X-ray vision.
Don't believe everything you read or see.
I still don't see a need for replacement. Seems like a waste of money to me.
Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.
Or not. %^)
doing asphalt on such a short driveway is an idiot move at any rate, unless you have a truck or something really heavy. It's just a waste of money by people that have too much of it. He should've just used sand, problem solved.
This is very satisfying. God bless these very skilled and determined men!
вот это я понимаю работа за один день и демонтаж и монтаж все сразу))) молодцы!
How much did that cost? Looking to do mine soon
TheFillyFill it depends on your driveway
This was pretty cool, I don’t know why it showed up on a WW2 documentary recommendation page but yeah.
Thanks YT, I guess?
I would have said forget the extra stone and paid for the extra asphalt. That was the problem in the first place, asphalt too thin. Jmo.
august anything over 2 inches is too thick and will never compact and harden. Meaning it'll always be soft and in the sun it heats up and causes sinking from things like tires. They'll sink and dent the asphalt and make it look crappy and could cause cracking eventually
Never heard that anything over 2'' is too thick. My driveway and neighbors were done in 2 lifts, the bottom was 2'' with bigger stone and then they put another 2'' layer on that with the smaller, tighter asphalt. It's been 10 yrs and both look perfect.
@@danielkustra9071 I think you need to go look at some roads and parking lots that are 6 inches thick. Asphalt is rock hard.
Asphalt compacts. Best in lifts , you won't get proper compaction. If just put it down 6 inches thick , it would be better with 3 2 inch lifts or even 2 3 inch lift rather then one 6 inch lift , asphalt isn't really hard as a rock it has tar in it which makes it flexible so it's important to have a good solid base under the asphalt along with the proper thickness of asphalt for the weight that going to be on it , and if the asphalt is too thin , it's just going to crack no matter what ,
