I don’t think we have had this camera angle:perspective before, it is really great to see her foot action more clearly interacting with her hands in one frame.

YOYOKA is clearly now in a very short list of top drummers in the world. Her solo performances are powerful, passionate and entertaining.

0:27 You can barely see Yoyoka's left hand in this video, but she plays traditional grip for a minute or so, trying out some jazz chops. And she sounds fabulous!!💛💙❤

Part of Yoyoka's wonderful sound is her very simple 4 piece kit. Sometimes simple is best, and in this case It's just right, and like so many say, incredible.

Yes, hurray for the Magic Socks! Great sound, too, as usual. Videos of gigs like this are going to get Yoyoka noticed really quickly in LA.

Absolutely outstanding!! YOYOKA is a phenomenal drummer. I don’t mean just because of her age, just a phenomenal drummer. What a beautiful mix of two stroke and three stroke rolls and the use of contrapuntal patterns. The use of triplets at different parts of the solo gave it a jazz feel. 🌹🌹

YOYOKA & Aki, thank you for posting this and coming to John Muir. I have only seen little snippets so far, but this solo is incredible. As Rob-Yule mentioned, there's a nice jazz feel to parts. Your cymbal work and confidence on the drums is wonderful. And I LOVE the awesome reception from the kids. You have made an impact on our school. Thank you! P.S. I would love to hear you play King Crimson's "Indiscipline" with live musicians someday, as you need such confidence in yourself and your fellow bandmates.

I think this is the most inventive solo I have heard from YOYOKA. We sre forever saying NEXT LEVEL in relation to the Hokkaido Hammer and her growth as a player. Deep and wide. Deeper into nuance and style. Wider into different genre's like jazz. Love the one handed choke on the cymbal a la Sugarfoot Moffat! Love the effortless shift from matched grip to traditional grip and back again. Absolutely stellar footwork and high hat work. Like Rob Yule said shades of Joe Morello's Take 5 performance. Next level here on everything she played. Most cohesive improvised solo to date. Not since her work with Ryunsuki Yamaguchi have I been so impressed, entertained and delighted by a YOYOKA improve!

I had the hardest time with this at that age, being alone, the only source of structure me, no matter what chops or how good, I was a nervous wreck about how to compose something that would sound musical and hold their attention. She doesn't seem unsure of anything, and why should she? There's grown men I know thatve played decades that can't play doubles that smoothly.

I also wondered the same - and I hoe she is at the John Muir middle school in Burbank. The LA John Muir middle school has some pretty terrible stats. 1/3 of the students are chonically absent, and only 8% test as proficient in math, far below the state average. The John Muir middle school in Burbank is an above average school, ranked in the top 20% of all California public middle schools.
