Mr. Blokey is no jokey. That sounded incredible. And kudos to the professor -great playing and a real "gas".

I finally listened in the studio. XY was my favorite with Mr Blokey sounding like shit. So... Should we release songs with a headphone mix and speaker mix? Imagine if there was an option on streaming platforms to choose the right mix for your listening environment...

Good intro to, and summation of, the stereo techniques, but you missed one -- AB, but with omnis, fitted with acoustic equalizers (diffraction spheres), at 50 cm, 90-100 degree splay. This yields the most stunning imaging not only left to right but equally important, front to back. With a good pair of monitors in a good room (or good phones) the 3D sense is eerie. More real and less fussy than a Decca tree, this technique also has the depth missing from the coincident approaches. Omnis let you get close to, say, an orchestra for detail, while still giving a good sense of the room. Been using this for decades with Neumann KM183s and recently Schoeps MK2H.s Never found anything better.

The last stereo recording I did was a layered acoustic and classical guitar in M/S with a Roswell Mini K47 as the mono microphone and the Lewitt LCT640TS for the sides. Both microphones were running through a tube preamp to get a bit of extra harmonics. The result was extremely beautiful and natural, especially for the classical guitar (nearly no EQing needed).

    • @reread2549
      @reread2549 2 года назад +2

You cannot go wrong with either one of those microphones. Both mics punch way above their weight class. I have the Roswell K47 and K87 also a Lewitt 440 pure. They are truly amazing.

OK guys I’m having a severe problem getting quality recordings using any of these techniques. I have no idea what I could be doing wrong. I set up every microphone in exact detail as instructed in this video but no matter where I place the Behringer Vintage USB microphones. It sounds like complete bollocks. I’m stumped.

I have never tried or even considered Stereo Mic'ing, but after having seen this video I might be tempted to do something with that. Love the blend of humour and succinctly communicated information to the viewer. And yeah, also a bit a jazz wankery to swallow that concoction...

  • @williamjones4617

This is definitely a great intro into stereo techniques! I think this topic warrants a deep dive for sure, particularly for anyone interested in classical recording. What really blew my mind open with a lot of these techniques was when I started understand the physics behind the polar patterns and how that relates to angles, distances and frequency response. For instance ORTF/NOS are near coincidence techniques where the -3dB down points align in the center of your image (thus causing a perfectly even image from L to R). This makes XY particularly interesting for why engineers use a range from 90-137 degrees.. And then why spaced pairs/decca tree might be better for placement further from the source (ie that low frequency response....). Ok got excited and wrote too much...

Ok, so weird question, but slightly important to my workflow:
James, it looks like you have an MX Keys for Mac (or not for Mac, whatever) keyboard there. How do you get the backlight to stay on?
Also, we could all tell that Prof. Fukkoutavit was just someone wearing a fake beard. Our question though, is when did Flopcat learn to play the keys so well?

You can’t fool me... that so-called ‘Mark’ is in fact the Prof’ in a baldish wig and fake plastic chin.
I favour the O-WTF method (just sticking a couple of mics up any old place)... the mid-sighed method (where the naff results make me expel breath with ennui)... and the ‘method’ method (where I change my name to Mike and live in padded box until needed).
Nope... still can’t hear anything ‘special’ in the binaural.

As all the other comments have stated how awesome your video is, I won't bother stating the obvious! I do however have one question "Why was Mark sitting with Flop Cat on his head playing with his organ? A pussy on Mark's head + the cat tail like beard and a lab coat doesn't fool me! Also blaming Flop Cat for extraneous noises, is bad form, when it was clearly "Professor Mark" adjusting his organ!

Too much bumbling and mumbling and bullsh*t in this one, sorry.
What I would've preferred though, that if you provided a simple gapless comparison after one another. Such like this:
2:19 - AB (or 'spaced pair')
3:37 - XY (or 'coincident pair' with 90° apart)
    4:59 - Blumlein (or 'double figure-eight')
    7:23 - MS (or 'mid-side')
    8:52 - ORTF
    10:59 - binaural head
