- This one was a bit predictable, huh ?
After recently playing through Digimon World DS, I thought it'd be a good idea to see where the Story series was heading, this time without the nostalgia goggles. Let's hope for the best, yeah ?

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about Digimon ! CyberSleuth's just been kicking my ass, length-wise. ; A ;
Digimon dusk 2 already in progress, but its fan made with more updated digi evolve and new story, more quest and post game side quest or challenge
Sadly, I noticed that Dawn & Dusk were the beginning of, shall we say, questionable localization efforts for the Digimon Story series. I still enjoy the heck out of the games, but yikes, some aspects really could have used some more attention to detail.
Fantastic video, as always! I really love your content!
I heard that CyberSleuth apparently also has some weird localization issues too ? And on top of the other Story games not making it to the West, I wonder if there were some more budget cuts there too. Also thank you ! Glad you enjoyed. :>
@@maraganger Cyber Sleuth has hilariously bad localization. The english version of the japanese release is better but even then not by much. Hacker's Memory is better, at least.
@@maraganger I know I'm late but...
Let's just say, there is one especially hilarious one you might find most prevalent.
That being the constant mentions of Bakemon.
Because here's the thing. Bakemon's name is a pun, based on the Japanese word "bakemono" (alternatively "obake" but that's besides the point), which roughly means monster/ghost/specter (it can also be shortened to "bakemon" and still share the same meaning).
...And so, as a major goof by the localisation team, whenever someone refers to an Eater as a monster, they uhh.... Yeah.
Or at least this is if I'm remembering the situation correctly.
I'm not too well versed on more of the general issues the localisation has, but that's a pretty big one nonetheless.
@@pxlpancakes Funnily enough, you're actually right on time. I'm currently at Chapter 16 of Cyber Sleuth and they're indeed referring to Eaters practically only as Bakemon, which defo made me raise an eyebrow. There's a lot of translation mishaps and it makes me wonder what was the budget like for that.
This is a pretty good sum up of the Dawn and Dusk games.
But I think the traitor subplot is supposed to be a fake out with Raigo, with the characters thinking he has something going on but was supposed to be hinted that Julia might be working against the group because she is affected by the mind thing that happened at the beginning of the game. So it’s meant to be like she is subverting the team without realising it because of the mind control. However this was my interpretation and this game does have some localisation issues
I feel like if it was supposed to be a fake out, it would've been acknowledged textually somehow but I get what you mean. Very tempted to see what was up in the Japanese script of Dusk.
I never paid attention to the release dates of these games! That's fascinating. I would have thought they'd be much farther apart because quite a few of the mechanical changes feel like they were made specifically to correct hickups of the first game. For one, you start with a team of mons from the getgo and Coronamon/Lunamon stay at Lv20 after the mass degeneration, almost as if to alleviate the initial grind that usually is necessary at the start of World DS. Furthermore, in Dusk/Dawn, your digimon only inherit moves, whereas in World DS, they only inherit passives - not being able to inherit moves meant that a lot of digimon ended up gimped or straight up useless in the first game's endgame whereas in Dusk/Dawn, you could theoretically make any digimon strong. I always have a Flamedramon with the moves of a couple Megas like Wargreymon and Imperialdramon. And then, of course, there's the whole handling of sidequests you mentioned. I assumed it was changed because it was entirely skippable in the first game and they didn't want that.
Playing through Dawn after World DS was a pretty interesting experience as a result, because I saw so many of the cracks in World DS seemingly directly addressed.
I totally see your point with the story too - I always eventually end up caring more about leveling up my digimon than progressing the plot. That's probably also why I don't really mind the mandatory sidequests - I see them as more to do while I train up my digimon. The fact that these games don't have set in stone stats helps with this too - I usually try and see how high I can go before I get tired of degenerating.
This is very well put together. Fantastic work!
Thank you ! :>
Yo! You got Karn's attention!!
I do think that it was a bit rushed due to what was happening at that time. Digimon Story was made during the time that there was no talk on making anything new for Digimon, so the producer just wanted to do something new. But around that time it was decided to do a new Digimon anime series and revive the brand, and that ended up forcing Story to add some unplanned tie-in with Savers. And now that there was an anime to follow and Story sold very well, a sequel was made to be done while the anime was airing and that combined with the manga and the fact that they decided to make two versions really limited their options while making the project.
It's interesting that happened again soon after that. After Championship the franchise was stopping again, but the producer decided to make a new game that ended up being Lost Evolution. But again, right around this time a new anime was announced and then they rushed another sequel to fit with Xros Wars.
It was only after that with Re:Digitize and Collectors that the Digimon series could really have its time to shine in games since they released the anime, now that they didn't need to follow a new anime again.
Great Video is sad Sunburst and Moonlight were the last ones for US and Latam before Cyber. Would Love to see you Review Digimon Story Lost Evolution as it is releasing in English Translation this year ! We will have to wait for Digimon Story Super Xros Wars Red and Blue tho... the last two of these series before Cyber Sleuth !!!
Aw thank you ! I'll defo be keeping an eye on the fan-translation progress for Lost Evolution. B)
The intro is even better than the one from DWDS. Very cool to see such growth in a short time :)
I 100% digimon world Dawn, did the Legendary tamer quest, DNA digivoled all the Digimon, and got every digimon in the gallery. To see if Starmon would move.
That's such a massive undertaking, legit grats ! :o
@@maraganger it was not worth it, he never moved.
@@davidettles1992 Awww, well at least you got this anecdote out of it ! ; w ;
lunamon is precious, and needs to be protected
This was so gooood! I never played any digimon games other than cybersleuth so its cool to see where the series came from and what mechanics carried over etc
Glad you enjoyed ! ♥
Had enjoyed the game without ever knowing about the previous version. Just thought the last line before the end when I was younger a hint about the end game boss.
Oh yeah, in the post game of digimon dusk there are one or two new digimon that pop up, one was at a dark type area, I think you fought a vampire there once. But they we're disgustingly strong. I remember the moment. I beat the game, got to platinum rank so I felt like I wasn't just "that guy" I felt like a god. What could touch me after I beat those platinum digimons, the scan data pop up and I was neat, hidden post game digimon(in retrospect I should have known, the scan data said 5%, for platinum rank!), so I threw out a special move to test the wate-1 Damage. I was like "...................What?", then I got _mishandled._ After that session, I degenerated and evolve all my digimon three or four times before I went back and it was still a struggle. I won, but I haven't been the same since.
Ironically I’ve never seen anyone even mention the hidden final quest if you clear all side quests and max out tamer rank you unlock a tournament of the universes where you face protagonists from across the series culminating in a final climactic fight with Chronamon
Hey just found your channel, this is some great content! Your flow and cadence are really clear and I love the editing and music used! Got yourself a new sub :)
Aw thank you so much !
Fantastic video Mara! Always happy to see new stuff from you :)
Thank you so much ! ; w ;
Loved this video!! Really great follow up to your last digimon video. Keep it up!
Aw thank you so much ! ; w ;
I remember my mom bringing home a used ds lite bundle some girl owned, one of the only games I still have from that time is Dusk, I didn't understand many stat mechanics as a kid but I loved it and could playthrough it. So glad I got a digimon experience as a kid it helped my enjoy it more as an adult, especially since I understand the mechanics and history of the game now. I am playing through the first story game on my r4 and taking care of my vpet now and can't wait to finally get to playthrough dawn and see the other side.
The final post-game sidequest with the boss rush I'm assuming you mean is the Destroyed Belt quest.
Honestly it was quite awful, but also absurdly cathartic. Even with absolute max stats you're probably not finishing it unscathed.
Awful but cathartic is probably how I'd describe dusk/dawn in general. I've made multiple playthroughs of it, both back when I was a kid and after I'm an adult, and in spite all my grumbling each playthrough I feel really fulfilled at the end of each one. Shockingly enough probably the most fun I have on a replay is trying to speedrun the game with as little of a grind as I can afford while still making my way back to the destroyed belt.
For some reason, I can't stomach even a second playthrough of Cyber sleuth or world DS, but with Dusk its easy (considering I've probably done 8 runs as a kid, one for each starting team on both versions of the game, and then another 3 as an adult where I finally start tackling the more absurd DNA evos). Same applies to Digimon World 3 on the PS1, I tried replaying that game and it felt infinitely worse as an adult compared to back when i was a kid.
Dusk/Dawn is oddly satisfying in how jank and cheap it is, which is why I've played it so much. Cyber sleuth is easily the better story, but its just a cheap game past that with honestly not enough to sink my teeth into.
I remember starting this game on emulation and never finishing it, so this was fun to listen to!
Wasn't even thinking about this game, but now I might buy it after completing World DS XD
I wonder why Dusk is the version that most people primarily discuss. It feels like Dawn content online is much more limited.
Maybe a little biased but for me it's just because I favour the colour scheme haha ! The purple just hits a lot nicer than the orange in my opinion, though I hear both versions are great.
You can play the Legendary Tamer quesst via action replay cheats if that something thats open to you. :)
One thing I found really awful in dusk/dawn now that I'm replaying it, is that you need crazy grinding to get ANY digimon to mega level, which discourages you to try out new teams and strategies and stuff, because you'll need a unhealthy amount of time to raise a new digimon. You just stick with your starting team and some digimon you found in the early game and go the whole game with it. And I think that everyone that I saw playing this game played it exactly like that
Oh yeah, I feel that hard. Pretty much went the entire way through with the base team out of convenience's sake.
@@maraganger i remember going back and forth with a lot of digimon on the world ds, getting new traits from different lines and stuff, because few digimon needed those humongous amounts of type XP, and you just had to continue from the evolution level. I think that regressing your digimon back to lv1 was a really satback on the way that they handle that, and having pretty much every evolution line need 6k+type exp to even get to ultimate level was really not necessary
Think if it wasn't for the incomplete lines and the fewer digimon I would like World DS even more than I liked dawn/dusk
@film fan yeah, it does need more species exp and the fact that they go back to lv and need really high level to evolve to the next form doesn't help either
I remember loosing some of my memories that I don't want to talk about but this game made me remember digimon
One of the best feelings in digimon is just testing out a random digimon you saw and then falling in love with them especially their later forms. For me it was Kamemon-JGamemon, Falcomon-Ravemon and Guilmon-Gallatamon(Gallantmon but I will forever pronounce it that way.)
Yo this is solid! great work!
Thank you ! :>
I wish they made a new version or something for current platforms
I feel you, I would've loved to see some form of spiritual successor beyond CyberSleuth.
@@maraganger I also miss the sprites like in the Ds games. ;^;
Yeah like maybe Nintendo should make a collection on the switch, the first 2 DS games and an officially translated version of the 3rd one bundled together and remastered for like 20 usd
A remake of these games would be nice, also I've heard that there is more to the story if you link both versions but it could be false info
There isn't.
@@LordFinkenstein thanks
I personally don't mind doing 2 side quests before doing a main quest. Feels like your doing your job to help digimon and slowly restoring the city.
If the gameplay loop and overall quest design was a little bit more polished than just "go there, get item" I probably would've been able to stomach that shit for a lot longer but I feel what you mean.
@@maraganger I agree with your statement.
Amo esse jogo, sei que ele não é perfeito, mas é um dos meus jogos favoritos
This is a phenomenal video
Let's fucking go digimon! Great video. Really enjoyed it.
So degenerating and digivolving is absolutely busted mechanic in these games. In story DS I ended up replaying but degenerating more often than I used to and without really going on any side quests I ended up beating the final boss with perfect levels
Then I replayed Dusk again and I noticed that the side quests unlocked around the period of time your getting your 2 done for the next story quest give enough exp to digivolve back if you dedigivolved after the last story mission. So I would alternate between 2 groups, one for story quests and one for side quests and ended up with some busted digimon by the end.
In conclusion Degenerate tactics
Actually, for that last part on the Legend Tamer test, you just need to do LOCAL multiplayer to unlock the quest along with being a Platinum Tamer. And it can be anything from trading to doing a quick 3v3 battle or even breeding for DigiEggs.
Oh I know, but finding someone to play with is not as easy at it was back in the day and I don't really have 2 DS + games to circumvent that issue haha !
@@maraganger Well... would it surprise you to know that I don't just have both Dawn AND Dusk, but also a sister with a 2DS she lets me borrow to play Dusk on while I play Dawn on my 3DS?
The postgame content in this game are brutal! I don’t think I ever finished the Gaia origin challenge
Actually about half your sidequests are still obtained through the Farm.
Oh yeah, I remember doing a few that were "if you have X personality type Digimon in your farm" that were hinted at in the side-areas of the main hub.
Nice, loved the 2 ds twins even with their faults
Glad you enjoyed ! :>
Aw man I remember when everybody thought that a mainframe was something awesome xD I believed so until i checked what it actually was and then the magic disappeared. Now when I hear it being used then i know that those people have no clue about what they are talking about. xD
I am not even sure if a mainframe is a better system than having each individual machine having RAM based access to the info. That way if the mainframe goes down you can still opetate. And if you work with secure data you can have a kill switch close to your desc where you can kill off the computer and it thereby clears the RAM. Ow well i did not finish my computer science degree, dropped out and got a degree in sinology instead, and now finishing my master's thesis testing my hypothesis on culture based suicude.
Still my favourite digimon game (although I played Dawn)
The localization runs into issues where the original script is written with gender-neutral pronouns but the localization only bothered with a single script with male pronouns. There are some translation goofs here and there ("Night Crow" is an awesome name, but as a counterpart to Light FANG it was supposed to be Night CLAW) and the Glare mix-up is because the script was originally for Dawn, where Chief Julia is the one acting weird. It also causes a weird phenomenon of your team worrying about him instead of Chief Julia between Thriller Ruins/Access Glacier.
As for the quest % the issue lies in the farm. Each Dark Terminal Area has 4 digimon alongside the shopkeepers and they're your clue of who to get into the farm to get a quest at the counter. Dark E Area actually has the digimon tell you the specific personality required, while others you have to guess through their dialogue. Or look up a FAQ. Though I still don't know where to find the digimon NPCs that clue in sidequests 08 and 09.
someone making a rom for digimon dusk and dawn and adding new gameplay 0.2 u should try it out its still in testing period
Oh yeah I follow Plasmi and their crew on twitter, really looking forward to seeing their final results. :>
You should cover Digimon Survive owo
I'm tempted but I'm not super into visual novels and the RPG elements seem pretty sparse, so I don't know. ; v ;
@@maraganger No worries, price tag is painful too! I myself am having trouble playing it, vn side is done decently, nothing special
Huh. What's the music that plays in the beginning of this video?
At first, I thought that it sounded like the Ice Cavern song from Ocarina of Time. But then I quickly played that song to compare and they do sound notably different, though similar. So what is it?
.hack's Dun Loireag theme
@@maraganger Thank you! ^-^
Yep, taking nostalgia rose tinted glasses aside, these games had better mechanics and larger stock of Digimon but a barebones storyline with forgettable characters when compared to World DS who had horrid mechanics but acceptable story (sort of).
They're not bad, but they're basically glorified battle simulators with grind.
When compared to Cyber Sleuth (who has its own issues) and Hacker's Memory, the difference is massive in everything.
That's what I hear. Defo looking forward to picking up CyberSleuth even though the estimated play time kinda scares me haha ! ; w ;
@@maraganger Cyber Sleuth's issue isn't so much play time, but sometimes the dialogue and some quests are boring, Kyoko's infamous leylines speech and Kyoko overall waste too much time talking about shit we don't care or is important.
Hacker's Memory is significantly better in this department, characters are more interesting and engaging, dialogue is more polished and not redundant.
Some AI bosses feel like cheaters tho, impossible stats, instakill moves, priority, insane durability and require some specific Digimon/Move to beat.
Both are worth it tho, it shows that Digimon can do a good Story game when it wants to.
Hey Mara, someone released an english patch of Lost Evolution, the third game of the DS Digimon games, will give us your thoughts on that game? im so far having fun with it, not really a lot of people talk about that game.

I'll defo look into it the moment the fan-translation releases and if I'm not too busy with other projects, probably. I was already planning on doing Cyber Sleuth eventually so having Lost Evo in-between would be neat.
@@maraganger between while ur playing or between cyberslueth and hackers memory
@@maraganger oh btw, something about cyber sleuth it’s the first game to have kuzuhamon’s full line, every other story game just had it so taomon could split digivolve to Sakuyamon or kuzuhamon but now we have Yuokomon and doumon so we finally have the full split path and kuzuhamon isn’t just randomly stuck in there in the wnd
@@insertnamehere1398 Either between playing Cyber Sleuth and actually reviewing it or between Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory, whichever works out best for timing.

IS digi converting Back in Dusk and dawn?
Digi-converting is a main feature in Dusk and Dawn, yes. It's usually recommended to convert at 999% for extra bonus stats but it's not all that important in the long run.
Good video! Dusk was the one i was hooked on as a kid, didnt realize the first digimon world ds was a thing until a couple years later. I had plenty of time so even tho i got frustrated by the repetitive quests, and the lack of postgame content (i beat the platinum fight then there was just nothing for me to do cause i didnt have anyone to do any wireless stuff with) i did have a lot of fun grinding to get all the cool digimon. I thought it was really cool that there were ways to fuse digimon to get the burst mode digimons, and also get omnimon nd beelzemon n stuff. It sucked that a lot of that late stage grinding was runnin around in the same spot in the graveyard lookin area grindin the same dudes but eh, fun while it lasted.
