I have to say, as a listener I’ve always been someone that loves lyricism over anything… Lodak was the first artist to make me appreciate different types of rapping. The childlike approach the takes to rapping in a lot of songs where he’s just saying what he wants and having fun. But he shows he has some lyrical ability at times and actually does tell some stories as well. And all in all, Kodak’s flows and cadences are insane.

X is the bridge between mumble rap and straight up hip hop, i think we need that sort of bridge to bring the culture closer together
'Mumble Rap' shouldn't exist. Terrible, remedial level writing should be unacceptable in ANY craft that involves lyricism. Why does it have to be acceptable in Hip Hop? Why are we diluting our standards? I'm all about the 'turn up', just put thought, skill and EFFORT into your writing while turning up.
Lost In Vegas fair enough, but the culture will advance in its own way whether we like it or not. So many rock and metal musicians used to say the same thing when it came to punk music, that it was too simple and it took no talent at all, and to some extent it was true lol but we still remember it now as a pivotal moment in rock history because it took risks and it challenged the norm, this isnt anything new in music.
And look where Rock is at now! It's in the shadows struggling to regain its mainstream appeal. That is what happens when you lower the bar. As a matter of fact THIS is what is happening in rap because we are not 'policing' our standards:

It's a disgrace and you and I BOTH know this is a completely different level of 'terrible' than anything that has EVER happened to Rock. It still take SOME talent to play an instrument even at the lowest level.
Lost In Vegas oh dont worry, hip hop will one day lose its mainstream appeal just like rock music, but not because of mumble rap, it's just the way the cycle of music is. Rock music didn't lose mainstream attention because of punk, it's popularity deteriorated because the genre just stopped being innovative, everything became just a rehash of sounds from the previous decades, and the only bands that do bring something new tend to be on the experimental/extreme side and not very accessible. Sub-genres like mumble rap or the new wave of soundcloud rappers is whats keeping hip hop alive on a relevance level imo, besides, it's not necessarily destroying the foundations of hip hop (there will always be rappers like joey badass and logic), it's bringing in a new take on the genre and keeping things exciting for listeners worldwide. Once we force hip hop to stay in this little box with a set of rules and conditions, is when we'll see the genre stop being innovative and eventually die

I understand your guys' opinions and I accept them. Instead of judging rappers' greatness off of lyrics, which does seem like it should be based on their lyrics, we should look at it from a standpoint of _lyrics, versatility, emotional context, and the overall craft of the song_. The reason why most X fans, such as myself, call X a great rapper is because he does a great job in most of the categories. In my opinion, if you are a rapper that can do most of those things, you are a good rapper. Again, this is my opinion, and Ryan and George, I understand your opinions will be different, especially because of the percentage of impact each category has on a song, but I think that it is the best way to look at an artist's greatness.

"Riot" was one of his most lyrical songs, and there are a few more, but if you want to hear a song that really contains most or all of the categories listed above, I would check out any of his songs on his new album "17". They are all really deep, and you might not consider those songs as lyrical, but I do and I still think these songs fit within the other 3 categories I mentioned quite perfectly.
