- Crowbar's Kirk Windstein talks about the new Crowbar album, the Down NOLA reunion shows and the possibility of a new Down record, when he and Jimmy Bower created the Crowbar sound, working with Philip Anselmo as a producer and skilled arranger and lots more. No doubt!!! Those two are in my top ten of all-time. They just mailed it with one song after the other that had killer jam after killer jam. Funny I bought Nola and just threw it in my pile of CD’s for about a year. Then one day I said to myself every single band member is killer. I gotta seriously check it out! I was completely blown away! I played that Cd more than just about everything! Later I got 2 and same thing except I didn’t wait. Two of the greatest gems in my lifetime without question!

Kirk and peppers playing on NOLA influenced my playing sooo fucking much. It's like a disease I can't get rid of lol. Down and pantera are the only band tattoos I have and will ever have. Awesome interview, glad I found your channel.
Haha those are epic choices man! I think in general a person should wait until a band breaks up or leaves this earth to be permanently tattooed, but I think you can totally do that. Yeah man I meet very few guitarists who are like me I'm obsessed with feeling the fretboard every day I can sit,play & realize I've been playing for 5-7 even 10 hours some days But I play so much I put other music on and run scales for hours that I can't even hear I've been doing it so long I don't need to hear step patterns or intervals anymore & it keeps my playing almost 100% improvisation Most guitarists would trip out not being able to hear themselves but it gives you a different perspective on fingering etc🤘

I Love Kirk. I wish him well. I'm glad he's back in DOWN. I'm glad he's happy with CROWBAR. As DOWN fan though it hurts to hear that it looks as though DOWN is back to being a side project.
DOWN toured for a decade straight from 2006-2015 and i caught a ton of shows. If they dont put out a record in 2020 this will be the longest break between albums of their career. Theyve only released 12 songs in the last 13 years.
Great interview. Just a little bummed this legendary band, my favorite band is on an *extended* break.

Kirk is one of the most down to earth guys I've ever had the pleasure to meet. He may be the absolute antithesis of most rock stars out there, and also a much better musician. Gotta give Pepper a shout on this statement too

I love down, with last 2 albums I thought they were gonna do 4 lp's to complete the cycle . My meaning being the moons on the last 2 were I thought supposed to go from crescent to full ? Wish they could get back in the studio and finish the lp project. I know everyone has they're own projects going, but would like to see it come to full fruition. Miss hearing that southern thumping groove. Love the NOLA scene, fan-fucking-tastic.

Thanks! He also has an enormous Type O Negative tattoo on his hand and has credited that band as a huge part of the style of music he is famous for, and I got so into listening I didn't ask about that either. They've been pretty heavily on tour, and are now going to be pretty heavily into a new Crowbar album, then doing the Down shows, so I imagine that isn't an active project right at this exact second, from the conversation we had. Sorry man, dude has been making music for decades and decades, to get everything in would be bloody hard. Thanks for watching though.

pkj77 I wasn’t all that into the EP’s. I think they lacked true energy and I think the reason is all the guys were burnt out on Down and especially Windstein and Pepper.

The Void with Christina I think if they reunite at this point the classic Down II lineup it couldn’t be better. But I’ve always felt Down like Pantera was the sum of its original parts and yea others could come in and play the songs but NO ONE but the four original members and Rex Brown should ever be writing a note for Down. That sound can only come from those people.

I find it amusing that a whole generation of musicians cite Ace Frehley and his work as a source of inspiration and virtually no one has ever declared "I want to sound like Paul Stanley or Gene Simmons". 😂
Makes sense, Ace and Peter were the rockers of the band and Paul and Gene were the pop music loving loser bankers of the band. Deciding who you like is a no brainer when it comes to Kiss
More people are likely to praise James Hetfield as a guitarist than Kirk Hammett.

I swear I noticed the last three albums (my first was Symmetry, but Sever was the first I heard of Crowbar) all began with S and was wondering if that was a conscious thing. Actually, I think I have more S titled albums than anything.
Am I the only one who listens to just the riffs of songs like "Symbiosis" with the melancholy beautifully-slow sound and want to cry with pride on purpose in front of people, at least the final riff at the end?
