Instead of saving for my kids' college, I make videos using the money I would have saved.
The thought is it will help educate the world as a whole, and one day generate enough revenue to pay for their education. Until then if you appreciate what you've learned in this video and the effort that went in to it, please SHARE THE VIDEO!

hey destin!
i have a question! will speaking against or with the wind make a difference in how far the sound waves are carried?
for example: if the wind was blowing west, would yelling toward the west have a farther range than yelling against the wind towards the east?
Technically yes. Practically the difference is not so big. (depends on how strong the wind blows too). Keep in mind though that this is just an assumption. I'm not a scientist.
Those words at the beginning with the kids describe you amazingly. So kind and thoughtful
I was thinking about you yesterday. Missed you.
dzuteh2K Thanks. Wanna come over to my apartment later? Maybe have a drink and listen to some music?
Patrick Bateman ye im down homie
Patrick Bateman only if we can listen to some phil collins
Patrick Bateman YOU'RE patrick bateman? That's impossible
Þorvaldur Breiðfjörð Always up for a good time, are you?
Ha! "puff daddy" was the best part of the video and there were a lot of good parts.
Dads untie.
That place at 2:20 is called Jökulsárlón (glacier-river-spring) and more than 75% of it has melted away since the early 1980's. The glaciers there will all be gone within a decade. (I'm from Iceland btw.)
Holy cow. That visibility is mind blowing. And that's from someone who's done a lot of diving in The Bahamas.
your kids are going to grow up to be successful adults in society. I'm LDS (mormon) and the family is the core of the teachings we believe in. keep up the great videos and can't wait for the next one!
Excellent video Destin! I love diving and would be thrilled if I could experience Iceland like yall have. That is so amazing that you and your wife have that kind of relationship and are passing on those values to your kids. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing, Devin! I really enjoyed this video. Keep your relationship strong!
Best channel in youtube! Period.
What's your wife's degree on? Great video as always, I wish I get to go there some day
Biology, Human Development, Physician Assistant
Hey, I'm almost a biologist too! If everything goes well, next year I'll be getting my degree in ecology
Amazing video, especially 1:36 I've probably eaten more than a thousand of those, kind of makes me miss home..
You are such nice people, and you must be really proud to your kids! It's really good to see you together. Btw i always watch for scientific purposes, but it seems it's not the only thing you're teaching us :) Have a nice day
8:30
you can thank me later
Oh my, once you and your wife are outnumbered by the kids, the dynamic changes forever!
Cute kids!
Its a lot of fun to be married to your best friend!
Great video and beautiful country. You have a beautiful wife and family. It's great to see a loving couple doing videos. I believe that is the clearest water I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Destin, I was wondering something. You know the part in this video where you high 5 that guy underwater? Well I've tried to high 5 people underwater and I've tried to clap underwater. Can you make a video explaining if it's possible to high 5/clap underwater? I know that water is dense but can humans exert enough force to clap underwater?
Hey @SmarterEveryDay you should go back and take your wife to “inside the glacier” up north. We enjoyed it as well as Sifra. Super cool experience. Great content on your channel.
Hi, thanks for the video. Good job representing men/fathers as good role models. Thanks for the Kiwi Crate toy tip. I'll get some for my nieces. They'll love it.
Literally awesome
God has Blessed you Destin, With a Core understanding of Family and it's unifying power of security and love for children and allows them to grow and let others around them to learn and grow themselves..
Woah! I just realized you have almost 4 1/2 mil subs!!! I've been here forever!!!
I would imagine the rocks at that plate boundary would be really old. Is there any evidence to support that?
that is so clear
you should go visit oslo in norway!
You should call the channel " its get better everyday "
Best wishes from Saudi Arabia 🙏🏻
Why do kids make it harder to travel? I'd have thought they fit very easily into most suitcases with room to spare.
1. it costs more
2. harder to find accommodation for kids
3. need to plan a lot more food etc,
4. just nice to have some alone time...
you aren't very good at humour, are you Doggy?
@Dulux Doggy
You must be fun to talk to at parties.
hehe, no, i prefer to ignore other humans, rather be alone on my bike!!
Cost is the primary prohibitive factor.. punching air holes in your luggage all the time gets pretty expensive.

Destin Wilson Sandlin (born 1981) is an American engineer and science communicator widely known for his educational video series Smarter Every Day (SED), which his special talent also includes drinking water while diving.
While diving, the air you are breathing is cold and dry. After diving for 20+ minutes your mouth starts to dry out and it gets hard to swallow and equalize. I love diving in freshwater because it’s usually clearer, but you can also drink the water (in certain conditions). I almost freaked out once while I was dehydrated diving at 100 feet in salt water and there was nothing I could do about it. Drinking salt water makes it worse. But drinking fresh water helps a lot.
That was trippy watching you drink water while diving. I felt like I was going to drown. Funny how that works.
Hi
wow. you watch smarter everyday too?
Same but wait i did not know you were there and you watch smarter every day
What's Inside I love you’re vetyoz you are so cool I’m sub
Did anyone else have a moment of panic when he took out his reg but wasn't blowing bubbles (until they saw the description)?!
2:05 It's pretty easy to tell, by looking at her eyes here, that she's expecting you to take a picture, not a video Destin!

I went diving in the Caribbean and had about 100ft of visibility, and I thought that was amazing. One hundred METERS is just insane really!
That it is.. that is amazingly clear.. and lovely fresh water.
it blew my mind how clear the water was!
Been places were you can not see an arms length, and nice open water.. both have good points.

Hey Destin what is this I hear of Electro magnetic drive. Will it be the future of space travel? Nasa is testing and says its promising. Can you do a video on this. It seems to defy Newton
It would have been, if not for the dry suit.

I have a strange feeling that you're going to harbour a very intelligent family

Do it. Even a weekend away to the next town over is good for the marriage.
+SmarterEveryDay you dont have to apologize for stating the truth. divorce parents are a broken disfunctional family and this only affects negatively on the children
Yep, all divorces are always bad for everyone involved./s
How good did that water taste? And how cold was it? My favorite drink is literally ice water.
I knoe its been 3 years but it tastes like our tap water but colder and a little fresher

Wow
i really wanna drink water whilst swimming in it aswell, that looked lovely for some reason?
It was completely tasteless.... in a good way.
SmarterEveryDay i remember when me and my family went to florida for a couple of weeks (we are from norway) and i remeber the water quality (bottled and tap water) really sucked compared to the water in norway, i was wondering if there was some particular reason for this?
cannot believed he replied to me, i'm very happy now
+SmarterEveryDay maybe you did not feel its taste due to coldness ....
It might be due to the geology. I believe that Florida has a lot of limestone which produces quite hard water which I think is not as pleasant as soft water.

I feel like I am mentally trained to pee when im scuba diving but im sure that would go poorly in a drysuit. Did you have this thought?
Yes I had this though. An added complexity to this was how long it takes to get into the suit. It's always a good idea to pee right before you get into any type of special suit.
I have about 500 wetsuit dives and always need to pee. For my 2 dives at Silfra I used adult diapers, which work amazingly well. Very comfortable with no sensation of wetness. It takes a while to break the reflex and pee into a dry garment, but if you really gotta go...
That's a great solution! Never would have thought about that.
it's actually a reaction due to the mammalian dive reflex that makes you need to pee. personal drysuits sometimes have some...instruments that make it possible to pee.
it would stay in ur suit, some of it
Quality > Quantity
idc if it's everyday or every month.
Love this! But I'm also a geologist who has scuba dived before.
@Ferguson101 Not really, sometimes you need a break from what you see/study everyday..
So you know hes not actually touching the tectonic plates ;)
Prov: 5,18. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
No idea how you manage a wife, kids, work, youtube channel and i guess more stuff and still appear calm, relaxed and happy. Thumbs up to you.
Did anyone take a chest picture of themselves between the plates trying to hold them apart? I would in a heartbeat! It would be the ultimate tacky picture, better than trying to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
But the plates are already going apart :P You'd have to pull them together
yess they are separating... because i pushed them
ahabtheplant The plates are actually about 8km apart, you'd have to have some pretty long arms to achieve that!
You're a good listener

I always find myself smiling after watching your videos :)
Your wife is beautiful for sure.. Lovely smile... Lucky guy! Very nice video. Thanks.
Do these suits actually keep you warm or just warm enough to not die?
I think they keep u warm. We live in norway wich is always cold, so we use drysuits alot of the time when we dive. I myself have never dived cuz im not old enough
Dry suites keep you quite warm. We used to dive under the ice in Indiana and could stay under 30 to 40 minutes before the water on our faces made it uncomfortable. We would also carried small Argon tanks to inflate our dry suites for more insulation.
if you wear suficiant thermal clothing underneath your suit, it will keep you warm way longer than a wetsuit because there is air inside the cloathing so you have manny layers underneath the drysuit
I dive in the Vancouver area and although the surface waters get warm in summer , if you get below the thermocline about 30’ down the water is about 8 celcius (46 f) and a dry suit is much warmer than a wet suit. There are two kinds of dry suits, one which is a thin waterproof barrier like a tarpaulin, but offers no insulation,; the other type is 6mm neoprene which is both water tight and insulating. For the first type you need to wear thermal layers like fleece underneath . For the neoprene type you don’t really need an under layer but I use a thin wicking layer like athletic clothes to keep the skin feeling dryer (and avoid baring your skin to the elements when suiting up). Either way, the insulation and lack of water against your skin keep you warm and dry. My body has never felt cold in a dry suit but it has been cold in a neoprene wetsuit of the same thickness. In winter your head and face can get a bit cold because your face has no protection at all and the hoodie is just like a wetsuit that lets water in. My hands have never been cold even with normal wetsuit gloves because there is very little water exchange once they fill up. The only downside of a dry suit is that the trapped air adds at least 10 lb of buoyancy that you need to compensate for with more weight on your weight belt. This air needs to be managed like a BCD. You add air as you descend to reduce the “suit squeeze” and purge air as you ascend to keep from ballooning up like the Michelin Man. The air inlet valve is usually on your chest and is connected to a low pressure whip to the scuba tank. Purging is done through another valve, usually on your shoulder, or you can twist your neck a bit and let the air escape from your neck seal. Also if you’re not careful and let your feet get above your head the trapped air can migrate to your ankles making your feet more buoyant than the rest of your body and you can end up upside down, feet up, with no means to purge the excess air. But altogether, in cold water dry suit wins hands down over a wet suit.
My friend would wear a sweater under his suit and was warm like seating in the sun.
I half expected Destin to be like "What's the most important relationship in the family?" and the kids are like "You and mom, duh," and then he's like "What would happen if we broke up?" "We wouldn't be a family anymore." "Yeah, about that..."
And instead, it was super cute and fun-looking. Nice.
Mephostopheles hahahaha u killed me bro. That'd be fuuuny
Yeah, that was pretty bs.
Newsflash Destin, it's normal for relationships to end.
the most important relationship in family is the one you have with your kids. There's no point in maintaining a relationship with your partner if it's a bad one, it's just suffering for everyone (I know it's not your case) but you can't "divorce" from your kids. They came to the world because it was your choice. Their lives depend on you.
woah dude, he was having a break from his kids..
My point is that it is a good idea to manage the relationship so it never gets bad in the first place.
If only it was ever that simple Destin.
SmarterEveryDay Yes, it is a good point. But sometimes it is bound to happen from the start though they don't know it. My parents are getting a divorce now but I'm kind of glad they are. Their relationship worked at the beginning but mostly because the bad stuff wasn't very "visible". They didn't let it "die out" or something like that, they just weren't the right people to be together.
Ciroluiro I just want to say that you can "divorce" your children, and many people do. Talking from experience here (my father disappeared when I was 8), but I totally get Destin's point, if the parents have a strong relationship (like they obviously do) it also benefits the children, i feel like the effort they put on themselves is also for the kids sake. Not saying someone can't be perfectly happy with just one parent of course, because I know I am!! But parenthood is hard, and having a strong foundation of support with each other probably helps with the struggle!
The importance of having a strong family is criticised these days, so it was really refreshing to see a family who genuinely understands how important having a strong stable family is not just for happiness and fulfilment, but for raising great kids too.
I wish you guys all the best.
Destin has always come across as a lovely bloke, but the Christian message was pushed just a bit too hard for me in this one. I wish him every success, and respect his right to his beliefs but as it's not for me I've un-subbed.
I agreed till we got to unsubbed. This video did feel a bit more preachy than I tend to care for, but given less than 1% of his videos (This being the only one that springs to mind) have that tone, and 100% of his videos are interesting, entertaining and insightful (including this one), I'll not be giving up my subscription anytime soon.
My unsub is because I'll never show this to my children. I accept that all the "Sirs" and things might be a cultural thing. But I'd be devastated if my children ever answered that question in that way (not that I'd ever ask it).
I'm interested by your position. Right off the bat i'll say i am a christian so perhaps i am not as aware of the "push" behind the christian message here. I thought this video had little to do with pushing the message and was more of a glimpse into his life, which is christian. As a final thought i'm curious to know whether the "push" is the issue or the "christian" is the issue?
I am more in line with this comment. I think it is strange to punish a content creator of such high quality due to a minor (in my perspective) disagreement over theological/life principals.
I am curious about your comment, i am going to ask why you wouldn't show this to your children? I assume a few things here. the primary one being that you do not want to raise your children with a christian bias. if thats not correct or misses the truth by too much just say so and i'll be happy to leave it at that (and leave you alone).
if you are raising them this way would it not be beneficial to expose them to exactly this content? Destin, in my opinion, is able to create a wonderful community that has a shared love of learning and kindness to others. if you wanted to expose a child to thoughtful debate on such common things as the merits of theology then i could think of no safer space.
My final thought here being this: Surely they will be confronted with this (christian) bias in their life and won't it benefit them to be exposed to it early and in a positive light?
I know i said final thought but... the reason i say in a positive light there is because I think it is a great miscalculation to only paint other views into a certain light. as i said above i assume you oppose christian bias but if you want a child who is well equipped in approaching bias of all sorts they ought to have a well rounded view of the topic, in my humble (but long winded) opinion.... Also i have no children... and am christian.. full disclosure.
Looking at the footage. The water is *really* shallow. Why did you scuba dive rather than snorkle?
It varied. The majority of the dive was around 40 ft. The deepest was around 90ft if I recall correctly.
Oh ok. Thanks for the info.
You managed to go to 90 ft at Silfra? With a shovel? ;) I think my max was 45. Also, I hope the folks from dive.is actually explained where the "continents" are, namely several kilometers apart at that point and not the two sides of the crack that you touch with your hands.
rich people, smh
Great video and an even better message.
Glad to see you got out of Silfra unscathed. There have been an alarmingly high rate of fatal diving accidents there. So i advise all people reading this who plan on diving there to be extra careful.
Also be careful at all times whe traveling in Iceland. Fatal accidents involving tourist are happening more frequently, especially car crashes because foreigners don't prepare for icelandic weather or icelandic driving culture.
Stay safe❤
p.s. yes, I'm a native. I know what I'm talking about.
UPDATE feb. 12th 2017: Another fatal diving accident happened today in Silfra. :( Stay safe!
"or icelandic driving culture."
How is the driving culture different and what makes it more dangerous?
what kind of fatal diving accidents had happened? just curious.
The White Piano Key Productions A lot of icelandic drivers are really aggresive and impatient. Also there is a increasing lack of road markings and traffic signs the more far away you are from towns.
icy and narrow mountain roads, lots of badly maintained gravel roads outside of the highway, strong winds and overall bad weather.

It didn't!

It tastes like snow.
Is a spot where the tectonic plates are tearing apart and separating really the best metaphor for a happy marriage? :D
"Like marriage, it's 2 totally different forces that come together in this one spot"
Sorry to burst your bubble (no pun intended), but Iceland is where the plates separate, not come together. I believe Hawaii is where the plates collide.
Visibility so good it's like you're just floating weightless above a space landscape...

i have a question. at 5:21 you pushed against the two plates does that mean you pushed the plates apart by 0.0000000000000000000000001 or some odd number? if so you can say you moved contienets apart.
Arnold Chavez seems likely
Nothing happened and here is the reason. The friction between all materials when the contact surface is at rest is greater than the friction between the meaterials if they were moving. So, in order to push those plates apart one would have to overcome that friction and, essentially, create a miniature earthquake.
That's also why earthquakes exist in the first place; the landmasses are not just gradually sliding.
+TheMrvidfreak so not by some absurd numbrer like a thousand 0's? sorry for my grammer emglish isnt my first lagnuage.
There is no such thing in nature as a number with thousand decimal zeros, I'm afraid. Google "Planc length". And as I said, disregarding the quantum fluctuations of sub-atomic level particles, the speed of the rocks that were touched on the video is zero almost all the time except for the odd occurrence of an earthquake during which the continent plates do move.
No problem with the level of English, buddy, as a Finnish university student I can assure you that I once didn't know a single word of the language.

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

I am SOOO jealous of you right now! I really want to go diving at Silfra some day. It looks so epic!
Have you dived in the Cenotes in Mexico? That's my most spectecular diving experience. Very clear water as well, and going through the halocline (where the salt and fresh water meet) was awesome.
I dived in the cenotes in Mexico last winter. It was really cool. The different densities of the waters really made it look like you were flying over a lake in a big cave.
Very clever Destin. Telling the bad jokes in advance
I've met Destin while at Gullfoss in Iceland. Such a great guy! It was nice to meet him :)
Where did we meet? Were you the one coming down the stairs?
No, right before the waterfalls! You were on your way back from the falls :)
If you're reading this have an amazing day! :D
Just out of curiosity, how pure was that water?
as long as you were the first one in the row of divers very pure.
