In this "Two Minute Fly Tying" tutorial, I share the Eggstasy Egg fly, a simple pattern that fish can't resist under certain conditions. In this video, I share the base pattern, but remember that there are multiple variations out there of this fly.
What are your thoughts on fishing and tying egg patterns? Feel free to leave additional thoughts, questions, or comments on this RUclips page, or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com
Fly fishing for beginners can be difficult at first, thus be sure to stick with it and ask others for advice. Thanks Tim. Great video. This pattern is good for "stockers" all year around. Not just fall. It can be successfully fished in low water conditions as well. With low water conditions I will sight cast to picky trout.. When I can do longer see the "pink salmon" color, I will set the hook. For low water and slow moving runsI will typically eliminate the bead.
Great comments, and I definitely follow the mantra: Show me a trout, and I'll show you a fish that eats eggs year round! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
You're the first tier that I've seen who just snaps off the tag end of the thread instead of using scissors when starting the fly. It just makes sense and saves a step. Anything that saves time when tying is a good habit to have. Good job.
Thanks for the comments, Bobby, and that works well with certain thread types. I love tying with Semperfli Nano Silk...which doesn't tear! You and I think alike, every second is valuable, especially when it's time to fish. ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

@@TimCammisa I just use uni, pretty easy to snap off.
It took me many years to warm up to egg patterns, then I caught a native bow where a limestone spring comes out of the ground on a cream colored one and was hooked!
That tends to do it! Thanks for sharing the story, and glad to know that they have a place for wild trout, too. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Dry flys are my passion, but sometimes to catch fish you have to do what you have to do. Glo bugs and their variations work so don't feel uneasy Tim and keep up the excellant videos.
I know exactly what you mean, Diane, and trust me, I don't feel TOO uneasy! Ha ha. Thanks for the kind words and taking a moment to comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Tim, new to fly fishing. Will tie some as I caught on shop bought one's last week. Looks like I'm going to be busy for a few ours. Thanks for sharing 👍
You're welcome, the fly simply works! Let me know how the tying part of it goes, and good luck. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I'm with you Tim great vid and tie thanks
You're welcome, Mark, and this is a pattern that keeps catching fish for me! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Thanks
Tim
Another great simple pattern. Wild trout in the fall like them too. A few patterns I’ve seen on your site are now staples in my boxes. Thanks
Thanks for sharing that, Chris, and glad to know we share some "staple" patterns. I look forward to hearing more from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Use this fly from ALaska to st George Utah. Awesome thank you. My variation is a red bead in the center. Thanks
I love the idea of a red bead in the center, thanks Mark! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I'm coming a bit late to the party, but I was wondering if you've tried Devin Olsen's Taco Tungsten Egg (same as yours, except the bead is hidden within the Eggstacy material). If you have, how do you compare the two versions of this fly?
Tim you mentioned dubbing in larger containers in your video looking to purchase, going to tie dry and wet wood I need to get sparkling dubbing as well
Thanks, Jerome, and it's up to you for dubbing with flash. I do like a little flash in certain patterns (like a Hare's Ear), especially when the water has some color to it. I also love a peacock dubbing with flash...so yes, go with some! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Lower Sacramento in October.......Deadly on the wild fish due to salmon spawn! Thanks Tim!
You're welcome, John, and I hope I didn't give up your secret!! Thanks for taking a moment to comment, and I hope to hear more from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Awesome Video! One of Ny go to flys in NY when they stop hitting my olive wooly bugger, squirmy worm is my next go to after the egg stops producing,
All great patterns, Drew, and the Olive Bugger is a fly that I don't use enough anymore! Do you primarily fish for trout? Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Tim, I have found the same to be true...early season stock trout seem to readily take the egg patterns where I fish in Northern PA. I normally use the Blood Dot pattern but may try this one too.
Thanks for the comment, Gerry, and glad I'm not alone in PA! Be sure to let me know how this one has worked for you. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
That is a nice pattern does it work for rainbow trout in streams
Absolutely! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I'm new to tying, and like these 2 minute ties, is there a list of the patterns you have done for the 2 minute Fly tying?
Thanks, Scott, and you can check my website under the Videos page for one titled "Guide Flies": www.troutandfeather.com/fly-tying-videos/#/guide-flies/ On RUclips, I have them saved here: ruclips.net/video/3DVSxOjqqbQ/видео.html Thanks for checking, and I hope to hear more from you on some of my other videos! Tim
Does this work for salmon in upstate NY? I’ve used egg sucking leeches but this is easy to tie. Thanks!
This pattern has worked for me all over, thus I would absolutely try it. Be sure to let me know if it worked for you, and thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hi Tim, I've been veeeery slow to shift to eggs, but I just saw a George Daniel video and he said it was his go to fly in the winter, and Devin also likes it so I'm thinking that the three of you most know something ! I was wondering , in water where you don't have salmon are are imitating trout eggs specifically, do you downsize the hooks ? Thanks much, stay safe, Bob
That decision depends on the water type and other factors, such as conditions and types of fish you're chasing. Generally, I love to fish eggs from #12 - 20, depending on the time of year. Remember, they may not only be imitating salmon eggs, but other species of fish inhabiting the water. Thanks for checking, Bob, and hope all is well! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Think orange beads would make any difference? Thanks for the video!
Experimenting with the bead color definitely makes a difference, and my favorites are all in this video: ruclips.net/video/nuCyQfpfjrw/видео.html I use the main 3 from that video in my Eggstasy Egg. Tim
There was a time when I would look down on an egg fly or a squirmy wormy and now that I am older and maybe wiser I realized - fuck it I want to catch some trout. So I put down the brier pipe and filled my box with eggstasy and mops and worm flies. And when the Latin bugs don't want to come out and play I still have a chance. I also moved out of Cambridge MA.
Have you ever tried the mcfly foam ?
I have and really like it, Tyson, especially for smaller flies. Here's my favorite color...well, one of many! amzn.to/3lGwAG1 Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
@@TimCammisa Tiers should keep in mind that mcfly foam floats. You need a bead or split shot when you fish them. They do tie well in small sizes.
Great pattern. I usually use egg patterns, squirmy wormy... as last resorts, but find it a shame that like so many other issues these days so many folks have an "all or none" mentality. I catch and release nearly always, but once or twice a year I'll bring home some to eat as well. I have no objections to others doing whatever they want as long as it is legal.
I know what you mean, Fred, and my original mentality came from some of my early mentors. At the end of the day, it's up for fly fishermen to decide what they want to use, and I'm fine with that (assuming that we don't judge one another). Thanks for taking a moment to comment...and I love those Squirmy Wormies, too! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Your tying something they feed on, don’t see anything wrong with it. Thanks for the vid!
I STILL feel uncomfortable using egg patterns, but as you said, they do catch fish. 🐟 Welcome to the “Dark Side!”
Ha ha, I know what you mean, Andrea! Thanks, and it feels good to be here. ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I don't see the difference between eggs and worms vs bugs..... if it's a good source in a river and I can tie it up I will. Seems silly to me that people look down on these types of flies. Thanks for the tutorial.
You and I are absolutely on the same page, Tyson, and thanks for mentioning this. An egg pattern is something I wouldn't have fished a lot when I first started and I feel it's important to share my own thoughts, especially how I've grown as a tier and fly fisherman. More importantly, perhaps I shouldn't even bring up the notion that many do "look down" @ these patterns, though I chose to because I want to be realistic and acknowledge that segment exists. My approach has been simple: Include all. At the end of the day, the real beauty of fly tying is that we get to pick and choose what we want, and if others have different patterns to tie and fish, that's their choice (and you and I can catch all of the fish on this one!). ;-) Thanks again for taking a moment to comment, and I hope to hear from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Should have given it a squirmy tail for Don.....
You know he would fish that, right?!?! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Why is this 2 minute tutorial 10 minutes long?
