    The fasteners you show are for HardieBacker. The purple Rock-On screws are the correct fasteners for this application with Durock. Otherwise, this is one of the better How-To's on YT.

    Help help big question before we start Reno tomorrow!!! Can I install the cement board directly over the drywall w all proper screws and on studs, since it’s just tiling walls in bathroom and not shower area? Thank you !!!

    • @AndrewThronImprovements
      @AndrewThronImprovements  3 дня назад

      Hi - I would not recommend that since it won't match up well with any of the surrounding drywall etc.

    Thanks for this! Helped me get started. Why do you need the tape and mortar? Added strength?

    • @AndrewThronImprovements
      @AndrewThronImprovements  3 года назад +1

      Correct, the Mortar acts as the "glue" that makes the wall one, "monolithic" surface that will not move as individual sheets of Durcok. This gives the tile a much more durable, and continuous substrate. Thanks for watching!

    Does the cement board run all the way to the subfloor or do you leave a 1/4 inch gap between the bottom on the board and the floor?

  • @unrealr33
    @unrealr33 3 года назад

    Great video, can you secure the cement board at the bottom by screwing into the bottom sill plate to avoid movement and the tiles cracking?

    • @AndrewThronImprovements
      @AndrewThronImprovements  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching! I definitely recommend securing at the top and bottom.

    • @AndrewThronImprovements

      Hi Kasia! I used a jig saw for the larger holes and a saw hole bit (on my drill) for the smaller ones. Thanks for watching!

      Hi Fred - Yes, I removed all of the trim from the bathroom as part of demo and then reinstalled trim at the end of the project. Thanks for watching!

    Why would you instal cement board on your studs? Ibunderstand the project, but where, and are you adding on? I guess I need a little backstory 9n this, as I've been looking for ways to add a small shower to my 1/2 bath, and it's in the basement, near existing pluming, etc., BUT, it's long & skinny w/the toilet & sink placed side by side at the end. If I could change the doorway into the room to the center of the hall that is the room, but there's no room; the laundry fixtures &tubs block that option.

    3:30 When I did a tile project, I applied mortar before placing the tape and then feathered over after. This created some leveling issues. Luckily, the floor is small in square footage. Was this a bad idea? I got it from Home Depot tutorial...

    • @AndrewThronImprovements
      @AndrewThronImprovements  3 года назад +1

      Depends on how much of a lump you have. From my experience, you can usually make up for the slight lump by using the right amount of thin set before you bond the tile. Hopefully that makes sense! Thanks for watching!

    You put the cement board before doing the shower floor? Shouldn't you do the floor first, that way if any moisture falls down, it goes to the floor?

    • @AndrewThronImprovements

      Hey Ricardo - The way the Kerdi Waterproofing system works, I was in good shape. But your logic is sound! Thanks for watching!

    This is undoubtedly a dumb question ... but .... what do you mean by 'on centre'? As in "every 8 inches 'on centre'"?

    No insulation?

    • @AndrewThronImprovements
      @AndrewThronImprovements  2 года назад +2

      Exterior walls were insulated but in hind sight I definitely should have used some insulation in the interior walls to help with sound attenuation. Thanks for watching!
