"That damn bass" is the late Sean Malone's fretless work. That guy was sick, like the whole rest of the band. They put in work on those album. The cymbal notes you hear are "ghost notes," kind of a calling card of Sean Reinert's jazz influences. I don't know for sure, but I don't believe that Paul Masvidal will try to reform Cynic after the deaths of S. Reinert & S. Malone. It's too bad, because this was important music.
