  • #1974Impala Junkyard Find. Another classic impala gets junked. This time is a four door 74. This one has been sitting up for over two decades but there are still some good parts to be saved. These are pretty popular with donk / big rim guys. I bet the demo derby guys love these big old boats as well. Either way, this one will soon meet the crusher so hopefully some parts will get saved before hand. #impaladonkparts #chevyimpalajunkyard

    Whoa Nelley, it's a Chevrolet and it's going away.....junk in the trunk. I have that same cup right next to me here on the desk. I use it to store pens and office supplies....it's from 2010.
    We got the VIN, we win: 1 for Chevrolet, L for Impala, 69 for four door sedan, H for 350 V8 with two barrel, 4 for 1974 model year, T for Tarrytown, NY (Westchester County) assembly, and the rest is the production sequence. The Tarrytown plant used to build minivans as some of its last products before closing in 1996. A 400 V8 in this year would have been a VIN code "R", so this car came with a 350 originally. GM used the same under hood label as the 400 because the emission profile was about the same, so printing one label was more cost effective for them. Notice also the spacing and gaps on the dash VIN plates. That's because some parts of it were pre-stamped, as they knew in the Tarrytown, NY plant that it would be a "T" and a "4" for 1974. Some Pontiac VIN plates (and others) are like that, so you know there was a pre-stamping of parts of it going on.
    We got the tag, we can brag: ST74 for 1974 model year, 1BL69 for Chevrolet Impala four door sedan, T for Tarrytown, NY assembly, 849 for Medium Saddle (tan) perforated vinyl interior with front bench seating, 59 59 for upper and lower Golden Brown Metallic exterior paint, and 04B for the second week of April 1974 production.
    Whoa Nelley, 1974 and out the door. You had the sweat, but you got the tag even yet. Made in NY, going bye-bye. Was shiny and brown, now it wears a frown. Going to be flat, that's that. 350 and gotta go. Two barrel on top, took a flop. That's it, time to quit. Used to run, now it's done. Going to get squished, ah, we're all pretty pissed.

      Question for ya Google User GP, if this car were a purpose built police package or taxi package model what would the VIN designations look like? Any different? I know with mopar they had special VIN designation for police package and New York City taxi built cars.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 3 года назад +4

      @@Monaghan Nothing in the VIN would specifically note that on a GM, unlike Chrysler as you mentioned in these years. For GM, you'd have to find other clues such as the invoice or the build sheet showing police equipment or other HD packages. Of course, you might have a clue looking at the car itself, but a lot of parts were available across the counter to make upgrades. There were many black Trans Ams in the day that "became" Black Y84 SE cars by adding the pinstripes. Cars like that were so hot in the day that if they couldn't order them as SEs, they "made" them in the service bay by ordering the parts.
      My 10th Anniversary Trans Am is a good example. All were supposed to in theory be Pace Cars, but the decal kit was sold across the counter and it's pretty well known that GM didn't record which cars went to the track as "Pace Cars", so for you to say "Yours wasn't an original 10th Pace Car" is hogwash per se. But if you say, "That code #15 Platinum '79 Trans Am with a 301 is a 10th", I know you're full of it as all had a 403 Olds or a 400 Pontiac (like mine). Plus the 2nd digit of a 10th is an "X", a regular T/A (including Black SEs) were just a "W" for the 2nd digit. GM was odd back then, certain cars are easy to spot the special ones, others, easily "created".
      NYPD used 4.3 TBI Caprices in the 1980s, while certain highway and pursuit cars had the V8 engines. Some RMPs were just 318s with two barrel, the highway cars were 360s. My friend was in NYPD from 1983 to 1986 (he later became a fireman in FDNY) when the Gran Fury cars were standard issue. He said the 318 was a dog, had the turning radius of a tank and had a fuel tank like a lawn mower (small). LOL.

      Nothing wrong with FOMOCO, just not my cup of tea personally. But I know about them due to being in the parts industry for years. I had to know them all, including the orphan brands and the ones that got bought out (e.g. AMC) because the company I worked for had parts for them all: domestic, foreign, boats, stationary engines, marine, small engines, medium duty trucks (to a lesser degree). We still derby them since you can patch rust condition doesnt matter. We'd easily pay 3-5k for one this clean to derby. It's got good bumpers and once you're done doing body bolts leaf springs, race motor, and a couple hundred pounds of welding wire you're going to get 10+ hard runs out of it. It can take 3 or 4 built crown vic's to take ten derbies, running 2 to 3 heats per derby. It takes around a hundred hours to build a competitive car so doing it once is worth the initial cost. I paid 500 for a 76 impala bumper that I still have and its run probably 40 times on different cars. The old ones bring a fortune in the rusty parts of the country.
