I can't even express how much I appreciate this tutorial. Some of those settings I didn't know were even in clip, so it's very helpful to have an example of how to use them and what they can do. Thank you!
The colorize experiment Really works for my way of colouring TToTT I've friends who always do gray scale and always thought that when I do it, it looks so muddy but their turns out so mellow and neat Now i can fix it
This method is underrated. It helps me since i mess up coloring if i go straight at it. Like, my teacher had us do grey scale in our thumbnails and traditional piece for a project. He then had us color it in afterwards digitally allowing us to revise values as necessary (which helped alot, knowing where we wanted new modifications)
This helps me so much. I tend to overwork my layers and everything become too saturated or contrasty that it looks like I put instagram filters all over it haha. The gray scale helps me prioritize how I want the values to look and not go color crazy. Thank you for the technique 🙌
I don't think this technique is being understimated but only a handfull of people is willing to teach it because is what a lot of pros is doing to illustrate and i believe they are keeping for themselves, I have no proof but neither doubt. Thank you so much for explain it to us.
I recently found out that I'm a bit colorblind, not badly but enough that it throws off my coloring (pretty wildly sometimes which explains A LOT about my older works) and a friend suggested doing grayscale to color to help me out but I've only recently started doing digital art and I couldn't figure out the filters. So honestly extremely helpful to me.
I desperately need ways to learn how to color stuff and this video is like the best tutorial about it ever 😍 I struggle so much with understanding color theory but it seems like using these filters as a base can be really helpful, especially with already prepared gradients. I'll try this method in my next drawing! THANK YOU ❤
This was really cool. Thank you for posting. My artistic process is very similar to this. Basically I use filters to get a rough version of the grayscale and then add highlights and shadows on top of it. I like working on top of the AI generated attempt at shading because it adds a level of chaos. Of course it can never be as good as simply adding the detail logically but it is an excellent way to make a decent drawing extremely quick. Typically I do the entire coloring process by hand and not with filters. When I first started learning how to use filters I tried to do the coloring with them as well but it takes a lot of fiddling to get the exact thing that you want.
Its a legitimate technique I just usually prefer not to work this way as it doesn't "Feel right" or at least feels less natural to me personally. I may however do so once and a while as it can be fun to change things up. Whenever I do, I also use 'alpha lock' on the greyscale layer base itself and colourize it a bit directly. It depends on your mood and how you as an individual artist are comfortable and inspired to work.
This tutorials is soooo nice. When I added my correction layer I was like uuuuhhhhh, wow, cool. I think I will use this technique more often now. It really helps a lot.
I don't personally like starting with greyscale then adding colour, but some artists can do excellent things with that approach. I think my favourite example is Peter Polach (formerly Sabbas Apterus). iirc in a video speed paint he used multiply to combine the colours, giving him a muted base to then work up towards saturation and luminosity in specific areas. Edit: in a recent video he goes straight to colour, so I guess as with many things, a painter who knows what they are doing can make almost any approach work.
I'd really like to have a Concept D computer one day. This video only emphasized it haha Thank you so much for your videos as usual, it's so pretty, and considerate!
Though I directly start with paintign in color, I always have a -100% saturation layer on top of my artwork to check out my values throughout my painting process (turning it on and off). It's really helpful and I'm glad that I have this option in digital art. ^^°
I first knew about this technique when I accidentally saw a video of a korean illustrator named "Coax Illust" in youtube, ever since I learned how to do it from him I've been enjoying using this technique when I'm struggling with values.
I just started to watch u and saw 2 3 vids i already love it! I rly want to do digital art and u inspired me so much! Well i need to sleep but i keep trying your tuts and i rly want my art to go from doo doo to Amazing work!?
Very cool, I am not very good at blending or shading and it kinda irritates me. But I do like black and white drawings, so this will be useful. I still need to get much better at lighting though. Time to get to practicing
For me, personally, it's less about efficiency and more about artistic experience. My favourite comic page that I've coloured (as in I enjoyed it the most) was using greyscale to colour but that's because by breaking down the Elements of Art Values and Colour, I removed the frustration it the confusion between the two. Maybe it was the value of the learning experience from getting an appreciation of what each element contributes to a visual image.
I started seeing one of my favourite artists do that too but queen speaks Japanese mostly so I legit couldn't understand how she did that x"D I knew it was a gray scale but I wanted to try it too and didn't know how
hey, i doubt someone's going to read that but i don't have access to Clip Studio Paint because of its price, which is pretty expansive in my country then, i use Paint Tool SAI once, i tried making a grey painting drawing so after id color it but i just had no idea what to do, everything i tried just looked bad the program doesn't have an option of gradients like CSP what should I do? :(
0:40 try layer color and fill black or change layer property->expression color to gray, changing only saturation doesnt work it just slide that thingy to the left,
If you want to get into drawing and already have a somewhat stable base, which technique (greyscale or colour) would you recommend to learn values/volumes?
I recommend using grayscale to practice on values more. It may be a bit hard to implement colors however it can really help with practicing values. But if youre using color technique rmb to turn it gray to check the values. Wish you lcuk fam👍
The pro of this method is that it gives you this sort of "instagram filter" look for your coloring. The con of this method is that it gives you this sort of "instagram filter" look for your coloring... Yeah, it's really difficult to not make it look like that, you really gotta spend a lot of time messing around the the gradient maps.
Laovaan suddenly drawing anime grills instead of bois, what happened and where is the real Schlaovaan at
Bobas
Oh mein Gott Sir-Sensei notice me :3
I like the change tbh.
Always the same is boring.

What a fantastic explanation of grayscale. I love using the colorize feature, its really fun to see what it comes up with

Finally!! Thank you for this vid. I just started the grayscale technique.

finally find myself a tutorial that i could understand :D about greyscale and value and the way to add color to it. thank you

*_I used Grayscale as a guide for my art and where to shade._*
*_I'm trying to apply this to making animatics too._*

I was struggling adding colors to my B&W paintings so thank you very much for this helpful tutorial!
no way. i was just thinking this week of trying this method out! thanks laovaan! :))
I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT GRADIENT MAPS
OMG THANK YOU, IMMA TRY THIS ONE DAY
your videos are so much more detailed and experimental i really like them!

Ohhhhh that was very interesting and satisfying to watch!
Can you read my mind? I was just thinking about Grey scale to color artwork yesterday! Thanks Loavaan!!
Literally perfect timing. I just finished a greyscale piece and don’t know how to color it.
Thank you so much for these detailed explanations!
Magnificent! A super video, super author, and, the best of all is this girl!!! Just an outstanding work🧚♀️
I'm too old fashioned habit to do this but highly appreciated this tutorial. For sure sharing it with love. ❤
I first knew about this technique when I accidentally saw a video of a korean illustrator named "Coax Illust" in youtube, ever since I learned how to do it from him I've been enjoying using this technique when I'm struggling with values.
Man, the way you draw on clip studio is really good that I would like to learn from you 😊
THANK YOU, I've been searching how to achieve that for years now.
I just started to watch u and saw 2 3 vids i already love it! I rly want to do digital art and u inspired me so much! Well i need to sleep but i keep trying your tuts and i rly want my art to go from doo doo to Amazing work!?
This is so helpful more than any other videos. ❤️❤️ You are really great
Wow this was really helpful.. now i wanna try out these 😩
I just noticed your art and I really like it🙂😄 I enjoy the detail and body structures🙂
Very cool, I am not very good at blending or shading and it kinda irritates me. But I do like black and white drawings, so this will be useful. I still need to get much better at lighting though. Time to get to practicing
Thank u 🙏 that is something I want to try for a long time and I don’t know how.

I never knew what gradation map was supposed to be for maybe I should try it out!
This tutorial was very well explained. I subbed just by watching this one.😄
I started seeing one of my favourite artists do that too but queen speaks Japanese mostly so I legit couldn't understand how she did that x"D I knew it was a gray scale but I wanted to try it too and didn't know how
thank you very helpful
great sharing and this was certainly an eye opener for me
sheesshh this is great ngl. I love you
Awesome job!! Thanks for sharing
Ayeee, early for once!!
Thanks for telling about this technique, I can do good in grayscale but am absolute trash on colouring.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Bro I love u so much! Thank u for making the tutorial
As a graphic designer I can say gradient map is a life changing thing
hey, i doubt someone's going to read that but
i don't have access to Clip Studio Paint because of its price, which is pretty expansive in my country
then, i use Paint Tool SAI
once, i tried making a grey painting drawing so after id color it
but i just had no idea what to do, everything i tried just looked bad
the program doesn't have an option of gradients like CSP
what should I do? :(
i would listen to this voice daily LMAO
Es hermoso, muchas gracias!!!
It looks soooo dope.
This is so cool ! Thank you so much !!

Excelente video aprendí un montón
Greyscale is def. more eye-friendly when painting with vibrant colors. One time I fried my eyes and could only see heavily desaturated for ~2 weeks
You are a hero, sir
Omg thank you so so much 😍😍😍 thats so useful
Thank you! I don't use Clip, but even then its very useful :D
can you tell as the trick of pencil color please
YAY
Any new videos coming? I enjoy your tutorials.
Next one comes in 4 days :)
How you do this with no gradient maps?
How to get the loish brush set in ClipStudio paint
Amazing!!!!!!

Hello! Love your tutorial. What tablet are you using for this? Thank you for the info!
Love your stile and vids what ar u yousing to draw not asking for program i ment device
Please put Arabic subtitles for your videos😭💖
I love your drawing style. What program do you use to draw?
Do you happen to have a link to those gradient sets you’re using or did you make them yourself?
you should do a collab with draw like a sir
I wish this works for me. But when I apply the gradient.....nothing happens.
where can i get the brush at 0:19 ?
What program are you using?
1:01 Arcane
Are you using photoshop? It is not clear what app you are using.
The name of the software is at the top of the window, the title bar.
Photoshop also has gradient maps and equivalents to the other tools he's using.
Make me your student pls i love ur art
what logiciel do you use ? i begin drawing with my tablet so i wanted to know what are the best logiciel to use
The name of the software is at the top of the screen
The pro of this method is that it gives you this sort of "instagram filter" look for your coloring.

Yeah, it's really difficult to not make it look like that, you really gotta spend a lot of time messing around the the gradient maps.
Ugh I wish I had photoshop now
Which software is used in this video? I want to get into digital art, but krita is very tedious to get the hang of
clip studio paint
@@kraesims7859 thanks :)
Character drawn looks like Rangiku from Bleach, but with a much prettier face(IMHO).
Bruh i just doesnt bave gradient map on my app
I subbed u
Hiii
it does the job of shortening the amount of time when coloring.. but.. I'm afraid there'll be no improvement on our color theory
do you have a deviant art account?
Yes I go by Laovaan there too :)
every League of Legends artist ever Deiv Calviz, Chengwei Pan, Foritis Wang, Esben Lash, Sixmorevodka studio
does anyone learned anything?
time to make new video ...dont u think?xD
