Always loved these bikes. Just modern enough to be fun on trails still, just powerful enough to pull an adult while not being too much to handle for most, and classic Honda Air cooled reliability. Add fuel, change oil, go ride.

I've had 4 XL & TL engined bikes and found the best way to start from cold, full choke and no throttle, don't blip it, that's assuming everything is set up right, points/CDI and carb as they should be, soon as you struggle to start one of these engines something is not as its meant to be, points/CDI worn, coil failing, HT lead cracked, when they are new they are the easiest of engines to kick over, half a kick and they fire up, if your having trouble try this, at night in the dark, soak everything with water and kick it over and look for blue sparks from everything on the HT side of the electrics, a water mist spray for plants is handy when its running spray it over the plug & HT lead etc and look for the blue sparks, HT cable, CDI etc. old school testing....
I've had a 1990 xr250xl and I now have a 1991 that I bought from Craigslist. It's only got 1580 original miles looks new
I found both of these bikes they'll start on 1or 2 kicks if you follow the procedure in the manual for a dead cold engine which is pull choke full on, DO NOT even breathe on the throttle, gas on, ignition on and kick. You will flood the engine if touch the throttle. If you do flood it. Turn gas off, choke off, hold throttle wide open and kick it over 2 or 3 times to clear engine. Then start over. Also when engine starts don't go twisting the throttle. Let it idle for a few seconds and feed gas gradually until warmed up. For some reason these engines flood really easy when cold. No problems after warming up
My little xr100 needs to have a couple small cranks on the throttle and then like a kick and it’ll start right up

I had that exact same bike. It was my first bike ever. All I did to it was jet it and it would start on the 1st kick ALL THE TIME. Miss it so much. 😢

Change the oil and filter every season! Pretty reliable bikes, just normal maintenance and you are good to go!

I like it when they dont need a choke to start I always says that's signs of a healthy engine
I'm more cautious when a bike doesn't like cold starting with choke. I wait until its warm and see if it has trouble idling or smokes black at idle/from a dig.
@@jetstream454 yeh my XR needed choke today because it was cold and not ridden for a week usually she starts right up without choke in warmer days
Dont let go of it, is jewell of a bike i got two with in 2k miles, a garage recue and a salt watter beach dweler. I just rebuikd engi e on the abused one, both run ans are fun to ride in the mud and swamp ttails

My father have a XR250R 1982 model, but the problem is that it has some engine damage and we're looking around 32k/somewhere around 700$ for parts of the motorcycle, and the also the parts are really, really hard to find on this bike :(

Ive got 2 of these bot 1994 XR250L though. The first I put over 7k miles on it taking it to just over 12k before it took a shit. I'm sure with love it will still go. I did however get chased down by an old guy on a ADV bike who offered me his 1994 XR250L and I took it, swapped by Renthal bars over and it took a bit but once it fired up It hasn't stopped yet. will say the only mod I have done outside the bars is I swapped in a R carburetor and it loved that. I need to do an XR,s only slip on now to see what else is to be had. This new to me 94 XR250L came free with only 2800 miles on it and a totally frozen L carb the throttle wouldn't even budge.

Man I have a XR600r and I’m having difficulties turning it on. Sometimes the kickstart kicks back at me 😭
You should have a compression release lever on the bike. On left side by clutch.
@@BraapEffex it’s actually on the kickstart. It makes this click I’m guessing when it’s at DTC when I press down half way.
@@BraapEffex does it make the click sound as for clutch release? Sorry rookie at this. Can I perhaps email you and send you videos and photos see if you can give a rookie a hand
Make sure your valves are properly adjusted, and fuel system components are clean first, if your bike isnt tuned correctly it will never start easily.
My old xr500 liked to be decompressed every other kick. My xr400 likes multiple decompression kicks before you try to start it. My wife's xr250 is the easiest of all of them to start, just kick.

When it comes to power which is more powerful? Xr 250l or crf 250rally?
Xr250r was lighter, had no battery, and had a plastic tank, VS the 250L had a metal gas tank and was setup for road use. Was a lot heavier!
What year is this bike? I have the same one but need a replacement clutch handle

Why all that prep to simply kick the 250? It sounds obnoxious with the baffle missing. I run 4 of these bikes. The baffle remains available from Honda. 😉
