Satan, the beast crunching sinners’ bones. Lucifer, the fallen angel. Mephistopheles, the trickster striking deals. These three divergent devils are all based on Satan of the Old Testament. But unlike any of these literary devils, the Satan of the Bible was a relatively minor character. So how did he become the ultimate antagonist, with so many different forms? Brian A. Pavlac investigates.

Just a week ago here in italy we celebrated "Dantedì" "dante's day"; a sign of respect and appreciation for the glorious poet. And it is truly an honour to watch how Dante defined and sculpted not only our culture, but the world's.

Agreed
I’ve been wondering about the differences between them for so long, thank you.
The problem is he was gods best creation till he rebelled and he was the major antagonist since he was the one that made Adam and Eve eat of the fruit
assuming all that is real tho
That isn't necessarily supported in the Bible. It doesn't say the serpent was Satan. It could be, but it isn't defined to be that way.
@@robertjarman3703 it never said the serpent was Satan. Just that he was using the s serpent to talk through.
The serpent that tempted Adam and Eve is never said to be satan. Some people say that now, but it’s not supported in the original text.
@@natalietipsword9677 that’s what I said tho
It's amazing to me just how much of the devil's character is both 1) adamantly believed in by Christians and 2) entirely based on fiction and not the Bible.
Lmao, Christians are at it again
Both are fiction 😎
@@eduardogodinez9384 That's just it, though: Christians don't actually believe that. They believe the *Bible* is nonfiction, but they don't dispute that Milton and Dante are *fiction.* Kind of a strange way for them to act.
@@eduardogodinez9384 we came to existence from nothing is more fiction tho🤡🤡🤡
@Ismail Mounsif Good thing no one believes that but Christians.
I'm so happy that Ted-Ed has finally made a video about me and the various versions of me that humans have adapted! Such a great honour.
I hoped there would be a mention of the Quranic version of Satan. Im Quran, there is one other intelligent species on earth called the Jinn (Genies), who were created before humans, and had a lesser degree of free will. In that Narrative, Satan was a Jinn really close to and beloved by the god. But when god creates humans, Satan thinks the creation is a mistake and that (their complete free will) will cause their failure. His disdain for humans causes his fall from grace, and he vows to prove that humans free-will will eventually lead to their failure.
Weren't the Djinn also created from fire if I remember right?
Isn’t Islamic Satan is called Iblis or Shaitan.
Liar Satan reason that he disobeyed God is because of racism and arrogance as he said in the Quran how can I prostrate to someone who is created from clay when fire is better than clay so because of that he disobeyed God and you are following his footsteps sadly
God - "Believe in me "
Satan - " Believe in yourself "
So becoming arrogant basically??
damn, the art. i love ted ed. thanks for making me smarter and inspired with each vid!
why do I feel like this has some relation with the whole Lil Naz X drama

Ted Ed: appeared in Italian poet Dante alighieri 's " Inferno "
Le me: *singing inferno*
Also me: so bella was talking to a book in the song hmmm...
I would like to add Portrait of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde.
The characteristics of the formerly work is parallels with Faust.
I recommend it due to it shows a main character, whom seeks maintaining his beauty for his soul. This immortality results the main character (Dorian Grey) falls to hedonisme and his never ending desires.
I feel like the animators were giving themselves a well deserved pat on the back at the end
I'd love for Ted-Ed to cover Wagner's Niebelungenlied and Gotterdamerung as well. Its just that no story or work of art is complete for me until Ted-Ed covers it
You forgot the part where it wore Prada...
Love the ending where the animators high-fived xD
Why is this story so interesting lol Idk what I was expecting but it wasn’t this
