- How to fix the weak parking brake design on late model JK’s. May apply to all JK but I am unsure. This was a 2014.
This is not a video of adjusting the brake shoes. It is important that they are adjusted properly and the rest of the system is in good working order first!
This parking handle assembly was broken in two different ways and was being replaced which gave a great opportunity to examine the old one for a way to modify this poor design to work better.
Basically you simple use a 8mm Allen to turn the through bolt one (1) turn clockwise. This adds tension to the clock spring that is in charge of keeping the slack out of the cables. It can be done in the vehicle with the center console loose.
I had installed this new handle assembly, adjusted the shoes and verified that everything was in good working order but the parking brake was still weak and the handle pull was maxed out. This modification seems to be working great so far! IF it has a return problem I will report back. However if you wanted to insure the bolt can not back off afterwards it would be very easy to add a small tack weld to the head on the handle side.
I misspoke a couple times in the video as always so I apologize (i.e. I said tension at one point instead of slack). And of course my videos tend to be long winded. I’m not a professional videographer or editor so you get what you get. Either way I hope this helps you all have a parking brake you can trust!
Enjoy.
2016 2 dr with 80k miles on 38" tires, replaced my e-brake shoes twice and they have never really worked no matter how much i adjusted it at the rear wheels. I noticed i had the same exact loose tension on the clock spring. I did two full rotations of that hex nut and my e-brake is now holding without me having to yank it up to full lock and what felt like only 1/2-3/4 engagement. I now get 100% engagement on 1/2 the distance pulled. The e-brake now holds even when put in 1st and i try to drive. this has never been like this.. Thanks!
Thanks for this video, it's the first time I've seen this bolt mentioned, but it now seems like the obvious way to re-tension the spring. Do you think there's a way to lever the bolt out a bit first so that it doesn't round off at all?
Is it still working after the repair that was done a year ago
Now just put a small tack weld, and you’re good to go 👍🏻
Could you explain how you put it in service mode, when you put the camera down?
What size is that hex?
“Assuming you don’t back it up”, meaning what?
Meaning that you don't move the screw backwards again. He explained at 4:32 that you only get one shot, going forwards, because it rounds off the edge which is fine because you don't need to move it backwards like he did to make this video. So don't back up the screw and it will hold.
Great info. Need steadier camera work. Thx
Çok saçma bir sistem mi yoksa bana mı öyle geliyor.bir el freni ayarı yapmak için
😅 I agree
If you got a park or a gear you don't need a park brake.
I never use one
Wrong. One day you will find out why.
Yes wrong. I had a car pop out of gear, roll down the street and jump the opposite curb onto a sidewalk. Never parked a manual without e-brake after that
When in doubt wheel chock it with anything nearby, a rock, a large stick, a baby, tightly rolled up rug/mat, car jack, or actual wheel chock since they are cheap. Yes, was JK about the baby, the point is just about anything will do in a pinch.
That is the most horrible advice I've ever heard 😂
I never did with my previous cars. The jeep, rolls down even with the e brake. Crazy.
