Woodworking Projects That Sell All Year - Evergreen Sales - Make Money Woodworking

- Your highest profit margins will come from evergreen products... So you have heard me mention "evergreen sales" or "evergreen products" during several of my videos... but I realized that I haven't explained the concept and just how to market an evergreen product once you have made it. The earning potential is fluid (constantly coming in) with evergreen products and it's so easy to turn a seasonal product into an evergreen product that can provide income year-round... Let me tell you how to do it.
In this video I'll be using the planters that we have built as examples... but keep in mind this concept can be applied to almost every build that you do!

Lost my job and struggling right now. I thought about building and selling projects but was full of doubt until I came across your channel. Think I’m going to go for it. I’ve got unlimited space to work in and the skill to do it and obviously plenty of time now so I have no excuse. Thank you for the inspiration man! 👊
I’m in the same boat and am going to do the same thing.
I have a bad back after working in a few tough jobs and dairy cattle. I'm trying my best to help provide with this awesome man's channel. Chin up stay well and be blessed
@@heathergarrett5076 thanks man I think I’ll get by but it’s frustrating trying to build most things to a decent quality with almost no tools. Doing more brainstorming than building atm. Sorry to hear about your back. I know cattle can be dangerous to work with. I have great respect to those in the livestock industry.
@@totallysick88able I have almost no tools too. I have extensive knowledge in hot rods and motorcycle body work. Can't do those jobs for too long anymore. Lol just pick a project and give it your best shot. Never over think.
@@heathergarrett5076 thanks! I’ve been a professional welder working in fab shops for nearly 20 years and I’m used to have top of the line tools at my disposal. I’m over here trying to make one those super slick table tops but finding it impossible without a jointer, plane or table saw. Best I can do is stick some boards together and hand sand the hell out of it lol. I’m making progress though
First off, love the jokes ! 😄😄
Second , your channel is SO MUCH MORE than just woodworking! The knowledge you share is pure gold. I really hope everyone is picking up all the nuggets you are sharing with the audience.
Cheers indeed !
👏🏻
Lol thanks Remmington. I try to make it more than just woodworking... a lot of the things I say will apply to any business and life in general. And I hope as well that folks are taking away a bit more than expected.
I started making those concealment shelves and have 4 sold already. You can get 8 out of a full sheet. I spent around $650 for everything to make 8 and sold 4 so far for $250 each. These planters are next on my list to start playing around with next weekend. I used Oak plywood to be able to market them as solid Oak shelves.
650? That seems like a lot. Is that for hardware, pistons or hinges, stain, magnets, and all?
Awesome! Get ready for christmas! The last time I sold these I had over 20 orders about a month before christmas.
😮
Dude, your very smart. Big box stores have done all the footwork. Learning from their marketing is a great idea. Thanks again
No worries!
wanted to let you know. watching your videos had encouraged me to get into woodworking. i have a barn i inhereted from my father that measures out to around 4,000 ssq feet and i plan on renovating it and making it into a proper wood shop. i have near unlimited time on my hands at the moment and feel like i need to dive in full force.
That’s great! Can’t wait to see your creations!
That’s great! Can’t wait to see your creations!
Afternoon Mathew. You're 100% correct about the drive thru menus. If you notice the ones at McDonald's, they also show the soda and coffee drinks in actual glasses.
Haven't had any time to do any woodworking for two months now. Really need to get back into it.
Hi Matt. Great videos and ideas. In looking at pickets at the big box stores there are two choices at one BBS and only one choice at the other in my area. Choice meaning PT or cedar. For me I've always looked at PT as being hazardous and not something to paint as over time the paint will peel. And cedar is a softer wood and good for outdoor purposes. But I would normally not paint cedar and just finish it with raw linseed oil as I had done with raised beds and patio planters I built.
I think it would be great if you could do a video on the differences in using PT, cedar and other woods (Douglas Fir comes to mind) in these projects and finishing differences/pros/cons/do's/don'ts.
All the best!
I made 2 farmhouse X planters, the mums fit perfectly. and one I had stained a orangish red fall color (when it I did it in the summer) it was the only stain I had on hand. Thanks for the video !
built several of the cross x boxes out of treated and cedar pickets. Set up a booth at local farmers market. put a flower pot with artifical plants in a couple to show what they look like. never sold a single one. setup at local craft fair this past weekend. took the boxes with the flowers and added the top part of an artificial xmas tree in one to show it can be used for the holidays. never sold a single one. i got 7 boxes in case someone wants one. i'll sell for the 8 bucks it cost to make.
😮 This is exactly what I'M worried about! Seems like items sell in some geographical areas, but not in others.
Certain things do sell better in certain areas... but something's not adding up if your not selling any. If something is not selling then you change something about it... staging won't work if the buyer doesnt like the product to begin with... Try Painting or staining them... try real flowers... most are turned off my artificial... But if you know that you have tried everything possible then maybe choose a different design or build all together. Stay positive my friend.
I just sent in some pictures that would kinda follow this idea. Keep seeing these Jack O lanterns everywhere so I came up with my own design (at least that's what I'm claiming) that has a spot for a tea light candle inside and has removable faceplates. My current one has Jack Skellington on one plate and a snowman with "Let It Snow!" on another. As the seasons change, I can make different designs for the plates to swap out.
Sweet! Love the idea.... and TNBC is one of my favs.
I really appreciate all of positive information and giving back!
You are so welcome!
I actually took a Christmas decoration and turned into a year round item, well, like your mom did for you,my mom did for me.
I have these wonderful angels I turn on the lathe and rather than let me giver one Mom bought my first one, and displays it year round in memory of her mother,my grandmother who died when I was very young.
When she did this I took it and ran with it and have been selling them all year round.
I truly appreciate all your work and how you break it all down!! About to buy a house and trying to do all the work and Interior myself. My question is..
Can you please make more "evergreen" sell for profit videos and as you make them say the sizes your cuts are and such. Thank you so much Mat!!! I've put so many people onto your page! Super helpful for us diy little guys to build stuff for our women and kids and family and church.
I appreciate not only your sharing of knowledge, but also your sense of humor. 😁
No worries! I've been a straight shooter from the beginning and show my mistakes in builds... so I've decided to stop editing out my silly side. Love it or hate it... its just me.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking 😁
You could also sell "fall" themed modular type decorations for them. Add some attach points and make seasonal decor for your products
Great Idea!
Came here to say this... Just sell all 4 seasons of plants/flowers with them. Could even do a little print out with dates when you change them out. Could definitely see them selling for at least 3x a "1 season" version. Maybe even 4x... For the same amount of lumber
Matthew Peech I think I almost or did get scammed by someone acting like you
Love this channel! There are two channels that I will watch the video as soon as it comes out. This is one of them. Lots of great information. You're a Peech, Matthew!
Thanks for watching! I'll keep them coming for ya!
I don't care what anyone says, those jokes were funny. Love the channel, keep doing what you're doing so we can keep doing what we're doing with your help. thanks so much.
Thanks! Will do!
I liked your joke! In fact I just picked up my mum's birthday cake for later today, and we always have them spell it mum! 🏵️🤶🎂
lol... well maybe I was doing it for our British subs.
I love your humor. Excellent advice on staging.
Thanks so much!
Your jokes are funny but you fall short on the delivery 🤣🤣🤣 thank-you so much for sharing your knowledge Matthew 😉
I appreciate your insights enough to help increase stats rather than silently lurk and move on. So, thanks for said insights. 💪
Also, idk if it’ll work out but assuming there’s no serious distraction at the end of the month, I’d like to try one of these with an acrylic aquarium built into the top… Riparium, anyone?
Sharing here in case someone else wants to run with it; Beats the hell out of another cool idea lost. 😭
I appreciate it!
BEST STYLE OF PLANTERS. I just sold some going into the fall. I just cross merchandise them. Beside adding a fall flower to planters...and my take on the box jack o Lanterns...next day sold a set of Lanterns and 2 plantees
Heck yea! That's how you do it! Great marketing skills.

Thanks for the video Matt. These are on my build plans for spring. I'm rewiring my shop right now. Hard to build with no power lol.
As always you give great advice on a good way to produce products that will sell, oh and I agree on the jokes as I get the same reactions. But, you did not waste it on this old dad that was funny stuff
Lol thanks Guy. I end up laughing at myself and everyone just looks. Heck I was alone when I recorded this and laughed.
The dad jokes are funny so keep them coming. Beyond that, I’m beginning to really love this channel, so thank you!!
Great work man. This type of information is priceless!!!!
The cut to “Wilson” is always a hoot😂 👍
Corny (and clean) are always good in my book 😁
I live in Tucson AZ. So I could probably stage mine with succulents every season. That’s really the only thing that survives the desert climate out here so they are always in high demand all year round.

Hey Matt, I hear you on the see sense of humor. Regarding the planters, I too cannot make them/it fast enough. Wish I could, but I'm a very SLOW woodworker...
Hey you do you and your speed. Maybe try some jigs to speed it up a bit.

Kindly suggest a glass of sweet tea and honey before you film 😁, J/K ,....just a note I saw your cabinet build that splits at the top on another channel, so you have more fans than you know. Hey Bro. Out of the videos i have seen you are 100 % ON THE POINT….. Have you seen my videos? Now if lazy people will go out there and get started. Over 20 years ago i had to go to places called library’s. I read a lot of books NOWWW everything is on your phone. NO EXCUESES. Have you talked about finding supplies at Trift stores, Look for trash in peoples front yards. ( Bulk trash cleanup ) Gold mine. Plus 1000’s of ideas out there. Learn to be self taught.
Please consider a video or series on how to sell locally. I’m working towards selling small stuff on Etsy. I’d like the option to sell things like planters and Christmas tree skirt like items that are too big to ship I might sell locally. I have no knowledge of Facebook Marketplace for example. Very much enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Check out the video on getting your name out. I go over a lot in that video. It applies to getting your products out as well.

Been following you for months, where do you sell most of your projects? Local, online, the world wonders. Keep it up!
I love dad jokes! Never stop them!
I keep trying to make these but my table saw blade is somehow out of whack and i cant figure out how to get it recalibrated and STAY calibrated. One day ill get it, and I can follow along with these builds!
My only glitch happens when I put the panels inside...when doing 5in even the 5 1/2" they not wide enough and I had a gap near the top...so I've kept all at 5 1/2".
A digital angle gauge can be priceless. Dont even use your table saw plate... just the gauge. Then if its cutting right reset your plate to that match that angle. Also make sure your fence and blade are square.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking thank you, i just bought this saw and have been fighting to get it right. A digital angle gauge will need to wait for now, but for sure ill get one

Great video Matthew!! A lot of great marketing tips! I do wish however, that the food in the pictures, actually looked like the food that you receive!! Mums/Moms the word!! Blessings!!!
Lol. Yea they dont show the burger with the patty hanging half off and cheese hanging off the other side. And the drink always has a straw... false advertising.
I like the jokes.
here is one of mine. If I took my mum's mums then there would be no pie for this guy.
thank you for your videos.
I am relatively new to woodworking. Thought it would be a good side hustle to start. I have been educating myself on different tools and how to use them properly for woodworking not just fixing house stuff.
Have a few tools; table saw, some squares, chisels, jig saw, lots of hand sander, saw, drill, pocket hole jig, and other bits.
would like to save for a miter saw. I also use the tools for around the house projects so they dont go unused for periods of time.
Hey Matthew,
Love you ideas and woodworking, but I'm curious, where do you sell your stuff?
I started following you in March, I've built five versions and sold nothing. So far, I'm yet to sell anything out of my store.
Maybe try adding some real flowers in them..
Ok so what kind of store? Etsy? The game changed with fuel prices as shipping will eat you alive now. So that means you change with it. You have to stay fluid with the world... so what could you try now? I get messages every day from people that can't keep these things even now... but they arent just setting them in a store and waiting. If you want success go get it... dont wait for it to come to you. Right now person to person sales on larger items seem to be doing the best. Good luck!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking Face to Face sales is not an option for me. I have three full-time jobs as it is.
@@strycian 3 full-time jobs? One full time job is 8 hours a day, 34 to 40 hours a week? When do you eat, sleep, do your shopping? When do you have time for woodworking? I have only one full-time job and woodworking is one of my hobbies. If I can earn some money with it, I'll be happy. If not, then it's OK for me too. I'm extending my skills and having a great time in my shop in the mean time.

This is going to sound dumb but how are you filling these? I know you have the floor slats so are you just putting a potted plant in these or are you actually filling them with dirt?
New subscription here dude, great content. Looking forward to working My way through it all
Nice to have you! Thanks for the support.
What kind or brand of paint and stain do y’all recommend for outdoor welcome signs pt pine pickets
Hey Matthew, what was the projects you started out building?
Well... my first business was in first grade selling paper airplanes... but as far as woodworking my first business was selling barnwood as soon as I could drive and started making smalls from that... lil nail together christmas trees, stars... things like that. Then learned to cut a rabbet (very easy) and started making mirrors and picture frames out of the old wood. They sold very well. As I sold I could buy more equipment and build different projects. The more you build the more your imagination will grow and the creativity with it. Once I got into building tables the money really started to flow in. People love rustic tables. Plus the wood had a story... so I capitalized on that. You do the same with whatever your doing.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking thank ya sir, I really appreciate it.
Love your videos bud! And the jokes! 🤣😂
When it comes to staging I have difficulty with that. Most of the time at my fairs I am stuck with a small 8x8 booth. I don't have a lot of room to make all these displays with the many items I sell. So I had an idea! I thought about staging and taking pictures of items and printing them into a binder. I have the space to set a binder out for people to browse through. Items I make that this would work for include empty Decorative Centerpieces, baskets, planters, shelves, and other various items. Do you think this would be a good approach instead of trying to stage too much in my small booths? It would also cut down on costs possibly.
I started doing Farmers Market this year, but my parents have done them for about 5yrs. A binder or brag book is one of the things my Dad strongly suggested. He got many custom orders by having photos of items he had done before. He had a large photo binder just set open on a table on a small riser so it was tilted slightly to draw more attention to it. Also maybe laminate suggestion photos and clip them to a stack of say planters, w a note attached saying "for more ideas, see my idea binder". You could also have a section in the binder for special order items and a "starting at" price. Keep a basket of business cards next to the binder. If you can afford it, make your cards a unique shape. It catches their attention again when they go thru all the cards cleaning out their wallet or purse later.
They do do? I thought everyone did!!!!
Great video, really helpful advice. Thanks Matthew! So I'm gearing up to start doing this as a side hustle. For the people that you hear from that can't build these fast enough, what's your sense of the platform they're selling on? FB Marketplace, Etsy, business website, or some in-person option? And if it's all online, do you think they're selling well because shipping is an option or are they only selling for local pickup/delivery?
I think most of them are selling locally. It's the snowball effect. They have taken the advice given in earlier videos on getting your name out and used that for the planters. When you sell one, ask the buyer to share on social media, give them a lil something extra (coaster or something easy) and a thank you note with your info on it. Make them proud to own it... and they will be proud to share it.
Honestly dude if this is what your planning starting up trawl through his channel for the videos related to this series I've been following him since a don't remember when a while and I have started setting this kinda thing up aswell people go crazy for some his stuff. And it's all layed out easy to work out and best of all cost low sell high. Good luck brother!🏴👍
Thanks guys! Michael - I'm curious how you are finding success with these -- are you selling locally using FB Marketplace? Delivery or pickup?
@@kevinkelley6749 honestly there are only couple these ave got round to doing so far as am still trying find my feet with it. Not sure we're in the world your based but the Fan trellis and planter boxes a spoke to a local shop not far from me who do firewood plants bird food pet food etc etc they were happy to put them on sale and do a deal for when they sell. Ive also done serving boards and trays and coasters and contacted cafes and restaurants in my area to see about getting them in there some of which have lead to other projects and if you've business cards give them something to display with a card. A Facebook page specifically for what your doing would be my best advice even insta and feed them through your own aswell. Market place seems be good but not had allot dealing with it and with regards to pick up or delivery suppose it'll be depending on weather you want random people arriving at your door or if your happy to drop off or have the capability to drop off big items and posting depending on size aswell. Matthew talks about Etsy shops aswell dunno if that's something you wanna look at. Hope this helps. 🏴👍
Keep the dad jokes coming! I need new material! 😂
Lol you got it!
Do you sell the plants with the planter? Or is it just for staging? If so, do you just add the actual price of the plant or do you add a few dollars more?
Staging is just for pictures.
If your staging for pictures and dont need the plants and you have a buyer that wants the plants then heck yea sell the staging flowers and get your money back. But I wouldn't offer to build and put flowers in. They will most likely want to pick out their own.
Yea they are... but If you get your pictures and have an opportunity to sell a staged planter... mark it up and sell it. Unless your case is like mine where every time I stage one my wife or family wants all of it. lol.
How do you line the insides of the planters , so the last longer?
You can use gardening felt or plastic but most just drop seasonal potted plants in.
May I recommend not using Thompsons water seal on the inside if putting soil I'm directly. Anything I plant dies. My other planter, unsealed does just fine.
I've recently gotten interested in woodworking but only have 25% vision. Do you have any simple projects that a blind person can do?
Stove covers/noodleboards, wooden placemats, single slab serving boards, wall mounted bottle openers. all these items are flat and mostly consist of one board or equally sized boards that need simple gluing. Push through your limits and good luck.
Where can I buy the plans for The $6 Planter with the measurements for the cuts?
Pumpkins ARE food!
That’s very funny
I sent a email with written plans for salt & pepper tables scrap project* to the brag board email just wondering if that was a good email to use? I could adjust it to house an "evergreen" planter....
Yes I think it was funny
Like your videos and the things you make to help us beginners. But here in Logan county ky you can't sell nothing. People will drive 30 miles to buy from big stores. I have been building stuff from you videos for a year have not sold anything.
I don't understand how to get access to the brag board.
How much are you selling these for?
Not to be or sound stupid BUT. are the plants real or fake ? And if real is there a liner of some type on the inside
They are real. You can put a liner on the inside if you would like but most just put potted plants inside. All the planters are designed so the bottom can drain.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking ok thank you I really enjoy your channel. TJ
