  • “What's the effect going to be if they come up kicking and screaming and start disrupting the court process?…I just wonder how much of this is political window dressing and wanting to look hard on crime.”
Criminal defence solicitor and chair of the Law Society Advocacy Group, Ian Kelcey, says forcing criminals to attend their sentencing would “bring the court system into disrepute”.

If the inmate refuses to go to the Court proceedings or there's reason to believe the inmate will try to cause a scene and disrupt the Court proceedings. A room should be set up in the Courthouse, Jail or Prison for the inmate to be put in for their sentencing hearing. A video feed can be set up in the room and in the Courtroom. The inmate can watch and hear the proceedings going on in the Courtroom and the people in the Courtroom can see and hear the inmate. If the inmate gets out of control then volume from the room the inmate is in can be cut so the people in the Court room can't hear the inmate but can still see the inmate. The inmate can still hear and see the Court proceedings. Just a thought.

The families "feeling better" is surely enough reason. They deserve the right to express themselves to the person who has hurt them.

So anyone refusing to go court will get a further two years added on to there sentence. How’s this going to bother someone who’s facing life in prison.?

Ngl so did Labour. Using tragedies for political opportunism is awful and appalling. I’m appalled by the depth these politicians will go to to make themselves look good. I think for Olivia’s mum, LL’s victims and Zara’s family it is the right thing - not sure how practical is.

It's not as if Ian Kelcey is without a bias and hasn't a known political agenda, is it...? 😐

Pathetic answers from the speaker. If you commit a crime, you should not be watching TV or in the prison gym at your sentencing, you should have to face the consequences.
