DIY "Blacklight" Scorpion Hunting?!

  • All over the internet are videos and blogs about making a blacklight using your phone, or homemade blacklight diy. They all involve putting layers of tape over your phone's LED flash and drawing purple or blue on each layer so that only higher energy light can come through. And the proof they all use that it's a blacklight is that it fluoresces highlighter ink.
So we put this to the test- seeing if it'll emit 395nm light to make scorpions glow, a wavelength barely below the threshold of what could be called a "blacklight". The results probably won't surprise you... but it's still surprising how wrong the internet is about this topic.

So good to know that even a "cheap" black light is effective in scorpion hunting!!

So there is no way to have a DIY blacklight, even with a lens or something like this?
