Cody, I haven’t told you this yet and am grateful for your work. Early this year my wife fell off a low wall and hurt her knee badly. I picked her up, carried her into the house, up a flight of stairs and put her in a chair. After she didn’t improve I picked her up, carried her through the house, back down the stairs, opened the car door while cradling her with one arm, placed her in the car, took her to emergency. Yep she had broken her knee cap and damaged some cartilage. Watching your videos got me into sandbag training about mid last year so really prepared me for the mishap thankyou. All husbands should be able to do that for their sweetheart, or what use are they :-) Sandbag training works! btw, she’s about 50kg, the same weight as my larger bag and our grandkids love it when I pick her up and do squats haha
Not awesome that your wife got injured, which I hope for a speedy recovery, but awesome that you had the strength and endurance to be able to carry and help her like that. That is truly part of what makes a man. Real, raw, functional, brute strength. I’m only 30, but I plan to keep lifting my SB’s until I can’t anymore. I’ve definitely caught the SB bug lol
I too have a lot of comments from people worried about my back. I feel great when I'm doing it. No unusual, wrong feeling strain on my back. I stay humble. I'm no expert. Videos like yours keep my in check. I'm flirting with 160lb now. Exciting.
Same here, lifting odd objects has made my back feel really strong! Keeping that mindset myself, I know there's a lot to learn still :) Also that's awesome keep it up!! 160 is definitely getting into 'heavy' territory, full human sized haha
That’s awesome! And hear that from my dad about the back lol! My back feels stronger than it ever used to. Low back pain just from standing would plague me. Working with a 150 atlas and sandbag at the moment but need a way to increase in smaller increments
@@thestonecircle appreciate the content! Your channel is why I got into the sandbags! Another muscle not mentioned as much is the biceps. I noticed they’ve gotten quite a bit stronger as well even if not a main mover.
MAN WHEN I TELL YOU I NEEDED THIS!!! Just got my first 60kg sandbag a couple weeks ago and I was struggling with shouldering it until today. Definitely want to improve my technique, thank you for all the content man ❤ Happy lifting 💪🏾
Heck yes I hope this style works well for you! I used to use the vertical shouldering method a lot, and got pretty strong with it, but this technique has been a HUGE game changer!
I’m witnessing the beginning of the channel that will get me to my next level. as a father. I’ve had my struggles finding the most effective and efficient workout with my busy schedule. Climbing, kettle bells, and now sandbag work. Sandbags are simple, powerful and carry over into so many aspects of your life. Hands down 100K subs will be here before you know it THANK YOU
I’m a lot older and fatter than you, but I want to thank you. I began with a very light bag and yesterday did my first workout with 90 pounds. I have an incredibly steep hill behind my house that I haul it up for fun. Will work up to the bag’s capacity, 125, then buy a nice one of some kind (been using cheaper ones to start out). I have no idea why working out like this is fun but I look forward to it. Anyway, it’s because of you. I don’t look a lot different but I’m stronger. I’m sure in a year it’ll be more obvious.
THANK you, a thousand times, for being another of the SMALL number of fitness RUclipsrs who talks about breathing and bracing. It's 100% mandatory for safe compound lifts, and other than strongmen and powerlifters almost no one understands it. I was lucky that my coach drilled it into me, even before I started strongman. A properly braced core (not Just flexing your abs) means a safe back, even in rounded positions. I've learned to get my brace right not just for deadlifts and squats, but sandbag and stones as well.
So this just clicked in my head and I thought it was pretty powerful. I found your channel about 2-3 weeks ago. Since then I’ve subscribed, bought your book, bought a sandbag, and have 4 or 5 workouts in with it. While the lifts are strenuous, they haven’t trashed my body at all. I wake up feeling sore, but at the same time more mobile and in a better mood. I realized today that I no longer feel the upper back pain that’s been plaguing me for years from the work that I do. Thanks for putting such great information out into the world.
Haha I'm glad about that! It's still a mystery to me so I just keep trying to make vids I think are cool 😄working out pretty well so far! And thank you!
Thank you! I'm always unsure how these super information based vids will do, just because they're a bit less exciting than some other stuff, but I'm glad this one turned out alright!
I just finished my first Sandbag workout. I can see the benefits! It works strength in ways a DB or BB ever could ! The potential is totally there. But I gotta say: sandbag work is not pleasant. It's hard AF! This is truly what "embrace the suck" actually means! It hurts. But that is why this works! It is not supposed to be easy ! Thanks !!
Man thanks so much I really hope you enjoy it and find it useful!! And heck yes, you can do a lot with one sandbag but getting multiple opened so many doors for me, I think your gains are about to skyrocket!
Awesome video! 👍And I totally agree: No matter if you're relying more on power or strength, starting horizontally and then making use of rotation is the best, at least for anything shorter than that log Brice lifts in his backyard.
I watch your content a lot and I'm starting to train with Wallballs and kettlebell, they are not sandbags but many exercises are similar. Your style is very relaxing and connects with nature. I would love a Day in Your Life or a full day of meals. In short, apart from training, knowing more about yourself, Vlog type. Big fan of yours.
Hey thanks so much! Those wallballs look like a lot of fun, I have a slam ball and it's awesome just throwing it around haha. I've considered doing something like that :)
I started with 50lbs just to be safe and get familiar with the form that was around July. Got it down towards the end. i moved up to 100 lbs and been doing it almost every day, and now it feels light. moving to 150 or saying screw it and try 200.
Awesome video man, very useful and well conveyed information and yes I see the comments all over peoples channels about snapping backs and shit up anytime someone is remotely horse cocking. It’s always just a reflection of the commenters lack of knowledge/balls. It’s like people have no concept of building up the capacity/resilience along the way.
I have the Ironmind (small and large) and how do you get yours packed so well? I ductaped three 50lbs play sand bags, but it flops awkwardly, despite ziptie and ductaping the ends. A comment and maybe a video on the topic sometime, too, would be helpful.
Hey nice I love the ironmind bags! It gets easier to pack as you add more weight to it, but it helps a lot if you spend a couple seconds packing the sand down between every set. I can definitely make a video on that, but between every set I'll grab the top knot and twist it as far as I can, then while holding the knot I'll lay the sandbag on it's side in every direction, sinching the knot down further every time. I hope I was able to describe that well enough in words haha. I used to think it was a flaw of the top knot style, but I've realized you have to roll the velcro sandbags around a few times to get the sand into position anyway, so the extra time ends up being about the same. It can be annoying but it's worth it!
Agree fully on the horizontal lap. It is by far my favorite approach. As for the rest of it, yeah that's basically where I've ended up as well as far as shouldering goes. You are spot on with the biceps issue as well. I never really feel it in my biceps very much. It tends to be a lot more upper/mid back, glutes/quads, and my forearms. Incidentally, the double overhand is also the best way to get an atlas stone loaded to a platform, or to shoulder.
For sure double overhand horizontal is the best! I definitely get some good bicep work from sandbags in general, but that underhand 'catch' position doesn't seem to be super bicep focused! Back of the body no doubt, hits the back like no other!
Man you know just the right content to put out, I’ve been struggling getting the pick on a long 300 lb sandbag, I can’t believe I never tried a standing pic before! Great video I like in depth tutorials on methods
@benbryson8662 hey I really hope it helps!! 300 feels so heavy off the ground it's crazy, good luck with it you got this! Also I should mention when I made the switch I realized I needed to improve my bear hug strength a bit to make it work, but it happened fast!
Got the book and read it in a day! Really liking the program as well. I'm a pretty small guy (5'6" 130 lbs) and am trying to develop the habit of working out. I have a 140 lb sandbag which I thought would be a good starting weight, and it was too light! Did all reps with only 1 minute of rest between sets/reps. I'm stronger than I thought I was. Excited to see how far I can go. Thanks for all the awesome content you put out and for motivating us all to get after it 💪
Hey that's so awesome I'm glad you liked it!! Completing this whole thing with 140 at 130 is insanely impressive, your potential is crazy if you stick with it!!
Thanks for posting this. I bought your book and was looking for exactly this type of video to give me visual of what you wrote too. Looking forward to the program. I started lifting a 100lbs 10 times a day every day a couple months ago and feel great and much stronger. looking forward to having a proper program to work with.
Hey I'm really glad this helps and I hope you're enjoying the book! Can't wait to hear how the program goes for you, awesome working with that daily approach!
Great video man! I’m currently shouldering using the “mixed” grip, but you’re right, there’s an over reliance on the arms. I’ll try this technique on my next sandbag day.
Im on my third week of lifting sandbags, three times per week, monday shoulder 5x3, wednesday squats 10x5, friday carry 5x60secs, plus pushups, and my weak back is feeling stronger and no pain at all. Im using a 30kg sandbag, im eager to fill it to 45kg but i dont want to rush the process and fug up my lower back. Any advice on how to progress will be greatly appreciated brother!!
Hey Stone Circle, I had an idea I wanted your thoughts on. If a part of the benefit of sandbag training is that it isnt an even load, would having a much bigger bag, one that allows for the sand to move even more, be a bigger benefit?
Hey awesome question! In my experience there seems to be an optimal range for that. If there's TOO much space left in the sandbag it has a tendency to fold on itself which is really annoying haha. I think that could be a cool challenge though!
Very interesting, so far I’ve been trying the technique shown by Mitchell hooper where you wrap your hands very differently around the bag on the lap. Gonna try this one and see how it goes!
@@thestonecircle hey so I ended up just using an old backpack I had, fill it up with some old books and notebooks and a 15LB weight, for now I'm just doing some squats and practicing my bear hug, all thanks to you my man
I can’t even bench one set of plates. Starting a journey. I have a good wingspan, so a large sandbag would be great but I can’t work with the weight of a large bag. Is a smaller, lighter bag still good? Or can I find something lighter to still make a large bag?
Hey yeah definitely! A smaller bag will serve you well, if you want to prepare for that standing upright lifting style from the ground I would make sure to do a lot of bear hug carries in your training. That's usually the part that needs catching up when someone switches to that new lifting style. Good luck you got this!!
@Cole205 will do! I lifted in school, put on a good 20lb but then stopped and my metabolism ate away all my gains. Starting over from scratch, years later. @thestonecircle , will get back to you
@@thestonecircle i am still new in sandbag lifting. You're channel helps a lot! I tried this technique yesterday and it works. Wish you good health and keep up the good work!
I have never used this technique for shouldering. I am going to start working it and see how it goes for me. Short arms suck in every way when the bags get heavy.
Hey I hope it works for you! That's the main reason I like the ironmind bags so much more than other brands, the others are just wide enough I can't get my arms around them haha, makes things so much more difficult!
Great stuff as always man. Thank you for all the effort you put on spreading the knowledge on that lost old school strength. Bought the e-book (hard copy cannot be sent in Greece) which is super cool, but on bw circuit I need a different exercise (substitute) on pull ups due to MAPS. I don’t know if you ever experienced that pain on the elbow, but is not something that you forget easy. So that’s my main concern if you would like to answer I would be more than happy. Stay on the path and soon 100K subscribers will be here to support you.
Hey thanks so much! I really appreciate you getting the book and I hope you like it! There are a few different options you can do. 1. You can just leave the pullups out of it, and run the circuit with four exercises rather than four. You'll just have to increase the reps to make sure you still finish it in that 20-40 minute range. The lats get a lot of work when lifting sandbags so it's not the worst thing ever to skip the pullups. 2. You could work with 2 inverted row variations rather than one. For example, Wide grip inverted rows, dips, ab wheel, shoulder width underhand inverted rows, decline pike pushups, or however you want to set it up!
Hey Cody! Do you think you could do a video on your Ironmind sandbag? Also, I just ordered a copy of your book from Amazon. I’ve been lifting weights or doing some form of PT since I joined the Marines in 1997. I got into kettlebells in late 2003, back in the dragondoor days, lol! In late 2019 I got a herniated disc in my neck while doing security work overseas. Had to get cervical fusion surgery. After I recovered I bought the 80 lb Rogue sandbag with the different handles on it. That sandbag combined with a Muay Thai jump rope has been the majority of my PT since, but now I want to add the “blob” sandbags into my routine. Thanks in advance. And again, you’ve got an outstanding channel. Keep up the awesome work!
Hey thanks a lot and I really appreciate you getting the book I hope you enjoy it! I have a sort of compilation vid of different sandbag things I've been planning for a while, and I'll definitely go over the ironmind sandbag!
Cody, during ground-to-shoulder work today, I managed to miss the landing on my shoulder and actually threw the sandbag OVER my shoulder, behind me to the floor. Is it time to move up from 100lbs to 125lbs, maybe? 😅
I weighed my oldest son today (I can pick him up but it's a real challenge). clocking in at 145lbs I know I can safely skip the 50 lb bag. For safety I will start with a 100... of course that's the bag that's always sold out. lol
Get a military duffle bag at Army/Navy surplus store. Put a contractors bag inside. Fill it with sand to 100 lbs. Zip tie the bag shut and tape it shut also. Zip tie and tape the duffle bag shut. That will get you started.
Having trouble lifting from the ground, my iron mind SB loaded at 225lbs. It’s harder because it’s much wider than my more compact 200lb SB, which I can shoulder with ease. Any tips Cody? This is my first week starting your SB hypertrophy program from your book. Lots of great info in there!
Hey first off heck yeah I'm so happy to hear you're running the program from the book!! Also definitely I feel that completely, my weakness continues to be off the ground too. Once I hit 220 I start using the standing upright lift from the ground outlined in this video, could be worth a shot! It might take a bit for the bear hug grip to catch up once you start, but it develops surprisingly fast if you keep up with it. It might also be worth starting straight away with the 'weak from the ground' 5 week cycle for that extra work to improve the weak point. I hope that helps good luck!
Your channel inspired me to start with sandbag training, I currently have a 60kg (130lbs) bag and with all my effort I managed to shoulder it but most attempts I don't succeed to get it above my chest. So this is where I'd like advice from someone with experience, should I lower the weight so I can easily do the exercises or should I just keep it and develop the strength as I practice?
Ideally you'd have two sandbags, so you could go for that max 60kg attempt once or twice per shoulder, then move on to getting some volume with a lighter sandbag to improve technique and build more strength. If one sandbag is the only option I think it would definitely help to drop down to 120 and work with that for a while. Good luck!
Hey man i like the video, but could you make a video about getting discipline to start exercise, and can i make sandbags lifts with a small backpack with books inside ? (And sorry for the bad english)
@Neoz836 thanks! I made a short on that one a while back actually I'll find it an link it here 🙂 and yeah definitely, you'll outgrow it pretty quick but it's a great start
Thank you! I just get the cheap box of blocks from Amazon, the brand is actually just called 'gym chalk' haha super original. For working with sandbags, if you can get some kind of rough material like canvas for a shirt that seems to help a lot with grip, jeans or something similar makes getting the sandbag to your lap a bit easier too, it tends to slip on sweats or cotton.
@@thestonecircle it’s a hit or miss for me. I just use a trap bar exclusively with no issues at all. I am really enjoying the sandbags now though. Next one I will buy is the 220 Cerberus.
@@thestonecircle I prefer the Cerberus over the rogue. I think they’re easier to fill and you can go over what they are rated for. I have the 176 but have it filled to 200 no problem.
@@Charlie_Liftsthis is good to hear lol I just ordered the 80kg cerberus bag and I was hesitant I might outgrow it quickly (my cheap 150 lb bag exploded). Glad to hear I can load it to 200 lb with no problem.
Hi Cody. I have your book and I am excited to start with the program you propose on it. Really recommend. I can see all the love and passion you put on the book. I only miss a part where you explain how many bags do you recommend to have and the weights. I have heard that it's recommended one 25 kg less than your body weight (baby bear), one your body weight (mommy bear) and one 25 kg more (papy bear). I guess that somebody with your experience and mastery lift heavier but for a beginner like me what do you recommend? Could be nice to make a video about that. Tks for your dedication.
Hey thanks so much I'm so glad you liked it! I think Brian's recommendations are great, This video should help too! :) ruclips.net/video/eAqzf7jwz4Q/видео.html
I know my comment has nothing to do with video but you have great philosophy on fitness do you have any recommendations on hand recovery I work at tree company 6 days a week moving and dragging wood I feel my hands are my only weak link thank you
@@thestonecircle also would like to say thank you very much your philosophy on doing what you can at proper pace and not pushing behind fitness leval has truly helped me start a process of getting in great shape and truly embrace your mindset already seeing positive changes in my life thank also I am ordering your book today if you start putting out merch I will definitely buy
hey brother i was really moved by your advocation for sand bags i used to help my cousin deload his potato sacks for his chips factory and i moved approximately 50-80 potato bags weighing between 50-60 kg 10 m from the truck to the store house. i have seen the strength in my body skyrocket. i wanted to know how in india could i procure a sand ba for my training
Hey that's some tough work! I could be wrong but I think cerberus strength ships to most of the world. If not honestly natural stones are a really great option too, basically the same thing if you have access!
Hi, nice video, a question, could it also be done without the Valsalva maneuver which was not recommended to me? I currently work with a 90lb bag and I don't even feel it too heavy
Hey thank you! Hmm I'm not sure I'll have to do some research on that, I've only ever done it with the valsalva maneuver, I'm sure there's something else out there though!
Great video as always! small question: what are the straps on your lower legs? do they serve any purpose, i.e. binding your trousers so they don't dangle? thanks!
Thank you! Yeah that's exactly it, they keep the pants tight to the body. There are more historical uses for them, like keeping bugs away or warding against the brush, but mostly I just think they look cool :)
Hello from France… what would you recommend for a total newbie ? I have two goruck sand medball 40 and 60 lbs. I have a poor cns recovery…. I think doing cleans, carries and squats
As an arm wrestler and new at sandbags I am not concerned about my biceps at all because tendon strength is extreme in this sport , my main concern is my back when shouldering.
Thanks for this. I'm relatively new to sandbag training, but I basically adopted a variant of this technique due to my leverages (long legs, super long arms). That video has already helped me getting better. I have a specific question, though. I train female strength athletes and thought using sandbag lifts/carry for variety and conditioning. Any suggestions/tips to coach a lifter with large breasts and relatively short arms?
Hey I'm glad it helped!! That's a really good question actually, I have 2 thoughts. 1. The ironmind sandbags (And possibly any of the top knot style sandbags from other companies, I just haven't tried them) are skinnier, which can make a huge difference. 2. You might go for a slightly underfilled sandbag. That can be annoying if you're going for the sandbag to shoulder but for carries it shouldn't be a problem. With the extra space you can kinda wedge your arms into the bag and get a better grip
@@thestonecircle Thanks for the advice; for now, we have to make do with the sandbad they have at our strongman gym, and they're quite packed. But I'll think take your advice in consideration when I complete my homegym/ Keep up with the quality content!
I'm in the process of trying to figure out shouldering my home made 140kg bag. It's shape and bulk makes it pretty confusing to move and definitely hard to get my arms around. I've seen lifters in places like India and Pakistan use straps to get around the bulk by wrapping a strap or cloth around the bag or stone then pulling on the strap to keep the object pressed I to them. I've also seen guys out of Basque country shouldering over 300kg by splitting their legs slightly on each hop up the torso so it's more of a dip, pull the weight up while it's off you then catch and reposition to repeate. I'm gonna try all the tricks I can find and I'll get these bags shouldered 😎 after I shoulder this 140kg bag I'll be recycling sand into a 160kg bag that will then be the mission to shoulder. Hopefully I'll be butting up against or passed 180kg by this time next year.
@@IsaacMorgan98 Hey that's massive good luck!! I actually have a video in the works with a couple really strong lifters, one of them uses that basque technique you mention. Hopefully it will shed some light!
@thestonecircle I look forward to it man! I'm a big fan of your content. I love the side of fitness that's just dudes trying to puzzle out how to do stuff that people wouldn't assume you'd ever be able too haha. Lifting will always be the best puzzle I ever attempted.
Hey man. Love the book , I’m following the program and bought 150 lb bag . I should have gone heavier. I did the 15 reps/side pretty smooth day 1. To progress would you recommend increasing the reps or decreasing the rest time between reps ? Thanks
Hey thank you I'm really glad you like it! That's really impressive awesome job man, if you're stuck with the 150 for a while I'd probably go for decreasing rest first. If you can do 15 per side with 30 seconds rest you might try slowly upping the volume by adding a rep to each set every workout. (an example might be 2 reps to the right shoulder, rest 30 seconds, two to the left, rest 30 seconds, then finish the rest of the sets with 1 rep per shoulder. Next workout do 2 sets of 2 reps per shoulder and so on). I do think singles are typically best but if you're stuck with the 150 for a long time that could be a way to keep overloading
What is your sandbag? I work in construction, and honestly get exhausted when i have to left all that concrete. I need to incorporate sandbag training bad
I have a #100 and #150. I am going to get an iron mind bag this time around. Should I fill it 200 immediately or should I do a smaller jump? Last night I shouldered the #150 25 times in 20 minutes
Thanks! You were the one who got me into sandbags I think about 9 months ago. I started with the #100 bag and could barely do a couple shoulders.. I have gained 20 pounds since then and feel super strong. This stuff works
Should I be feeling a burn when doing the sandbag to shoulder? I managed to do 15 reps although they did get harder, the 1-2 minute break between reps kind of prevented burning sensation. I don’t know much about weights so I was curious about that. The other exercises seemed to be a little more challenging to me than the sandbag to shoulder so my sandbag weight might be good enough. I am also curious if I should switch from right shoulder to left shoulder every rep because I just did the right for as much as I could and then the left. Also such another solid video. Awesome information in there man.
@grassygrandma hey great question! The point with how I set up the program is actually to avoid the burn. You want every rep to start fresh, so that you improve technique, and so you can use heavier weights. There is definitely a place for sets of 10 sandbag to shoukder with lighter weight, but 200 to the shoulder for 5 singles is a much different stimulus from a set of 5 with 100, just as an example. I usually try to alternate back and forth between shoulders every rep, but mainly I'd just try to make sure the total number per side is the same (or close to the same. And thank you!
@@thestonecircle awesome! That’s good to know then, I was concerned I was doing it wrong or that my weight was too light but I guess it’s the right weight so far. I have it at 150lb. Thanks man! Also those sandbag lap to chest at the end killed me. I hit failure after like 4 reps.
Hey Cody , I’m needing to upgrade to a 200# bag , I was thinking of getting the large iron mind tough as nails . It’s a 300# capacity but was hoping I could grow to that over time . Do you think it would work well only filled with 200# ? Or should I just get a 200# bag elsewhere . Thanks man
Hey I think it works great! It won't be 100% completely compact like a rogue sandbag, but it's definitely usable at that weight! For reference, I have one of those filled to 150, and the sand does shift a bit but not too bad, and I have 9ne filled up to 250 and the sand barely moves at all, so I'm thinking 200 should be great
I think they're indestructible which is nice! I dropped mine from shoulder height onto rocks and sticks for years and it's good as new. Mostly though I like the shape. It's just a bit skinnier, which makes it a little easier to handle imo! They're all great though
@@thestonecircle thanks for the answer, got another question what filler material and method do you use? At the moment im lookin at Fringe's filler bags but im looking at other options too
I tried doing 200 lb carry, I used the vertical grip and I keep getting my knees, is there a way to fix that? Or should I just use the horizontal grip instead when pulling off the ground.
Hey I get that. If you can, bring the sandbag higher up on your chest with that vertical grip. If it's still a challenge weight, using a horizontal grip at waist level for a while while you build up strength can work great too
@TadayoriOverAll my first one was around 75 lbs and I made it out of a thrift store canvas bag. After a couple weeks I got an ironmind sandbag and filled it up to somewhere around 175, and stuck with it for a long time. I already had many years barbell lifting experience when I started though so I was able to shoulder it pretty quick if I rememeber correctly. I was mostly into carries when I first started. Main thing I learned though is sandbags never stop feeling heavy. I should have moved up sooner but I didn't know any better at the time
Idea: get a "For Dummies" book on Kinesiology and/or biomechanics, and write scripts that reflect the specific effect of a particular move or outline your programming's effect on the body. I've found that being able to visualize the movement of the muscles helps with proper form and confidence with big moves. Of course, it's not medical advice, just observations.
I have to renew my training certification soon so I'm sure I'll get back into more of that mindset for a while haha. I know what you're saying though, I do take it for granted that everyone knows lifting sandbags in general will build muscle all over, but I know that's not the case. I try to mention specific muscles sometimes but I could improve that
From the thumbnail it looks like you have an imbalance in the shoulders. Or is it just the way you took the photo? Might be a shame getting an imbalance after all that hard work
Is this good for your back?! I mean the tension and force of forcing it up from the grounds up, like at least part of your back be screaming and not in a good way. I know technique is everything but still this shit doesn't look to be very sustainable in the long run for your back right? But hey I'm not an expert at anything, just an observer.
@alexanderbrownbill3405 so far it's made my back feel great but I can't say for sure one way or the other. I usually look to basque stone lifters for motivation though, many of them have been lifting very heavy stones for high volume for years and they're okay

That is truly part of what makes a man. Real, raw, functional, brute strength. I’m only 30, but I plan to keep lifting my SB’s until I can’t anymore. I’ve definitely caught the SB bug lol
Throwing something heavy on your shoulder is one of the best ways to show strength and power, and just feels super cool 💪
So true!!

I stay humble. I'm no expert. Videos like yours keep my in check.

MAN WHEN I TELL YOU I NEEDED THIS!!! Just got my first 60kg sandbag a couple weeks ago and I was struggling with shouldering it until today. Definitely want to improve my technique, thank you for all the content man ❤
Happy lifting 💪🏾
Heck yes I hope this style works well for you! I used to use the vertical shouldering method a lot, and got pretty strong with it, but this technique has been a HUGE game changer!
I’m witnessing the beginning of the channel that will get me to my next level. as a father. I’ve had my struggles finding the most effective and efficient workout with my busy schedule. Climbing, kettle bells, and now sandbag work. Sandbags are simple, powerful and carry over into so many aspects of your life.
Hands down 100K subs will be here before you know it
THANK YOU
Hey seriously thanks so much!!
Hey I'm so honored! That's so great to hear, I can't wait to hear your thoughts moving forward!!
YES it is so absolutely fundamental!!
100%. Finding Brian Alsruhe's videos about breathing and bracing moved forward my lifting more than just about anything else I've done.
This is so great man!! I'm honored to help, and thank you for being here and getting the book I really appreciate it, good luck with the training!

I really need to find sandbags in Lebanon im missing out
It's awesome! Natural stones are really similar and work great if you have any around too!
Isn't your country made of sand?
Awesome video! 👍And I totally agree: No matter if you're relying more on power or strength, starting horizontally and then making use of rotation is the best, at least for anything shorter than that log Brice lifts in his backyard.

Hahah yes Brice is on another level :D That rotation really does help so much!

I've considered doing something like that :)
the book really opened my eyes again to lifting heavy things i love what your doing here! keep up the good work!

@@StopTheDamnTape thanks man I'd love to see what you could do with this style once the weather improves! Yeah exactly haha
Quality video. Very thorough man. I just got my first sandbag, so this is extremely helpful. Thanks.
Hey thank you I hope it helps, good luck with the sandbag training!!
Nice one Cody, always wanted to hear your take on the horizontal vs vertical lift to lap!
Hey glad you liked it!
Love the videos!
Hey thank you!
Great quality as always, thanks Cody!
Hey thanks Andy!

Great video man! I’m currently shouldering using the “mixed” grip, but you’re right, there’s an over reliance on the arms. I’ll try this technique on my next sandbag day.

Another great video Cody!!!
Perfect timing! Ive set myself a goal to put more time into this movement,so this video has helped... a lot!!!

Very interesting, so far I’ve been trying the technique shown by Mitchell hooper where you wrap your hands very differently around the bag on the lap. Gonna try this one and see how it goes!
There are so many different ways to do it! This one works great for me though, I hope it works for you too 🙂
Do you think using a punching bag would be a good alternative?
Yeah for sure! Just make sure to move on to something heavier once it becomes easy for you :)

I have never used this technique for shouldering. I am going to start working it and see how it goes for me. Short arms suck in every way when the bags get heavy.

Hahah I know that feeling, I did the same thing. Yeah I think you're ready for 125!
I weighed my oldest son today (I can pick him up but it's a real challenge). clocking in at 145lbs I know I can safely skip the 50 lb bag. For safety I will start with a 100... of course that's the bag that's always sold out. lol
haha of course! That's awesome you're gonna love that thing, a 100 lb sandbag can definitely keep you busy for a while!
Nickname your son "Milo's Calf" as the strongman legend goes
@@Cole205 oh man I had to look that one up. it's been a long time since I heard that story.
Good luck!

As an arm wrestler and new at sandbags I am not concerned about my biceps at all because tendon strength is extreme in this sport , my main concern is my back when shouldering.
Oh yeah you're probably set! My main recommendation for that is to focus everything on breathing and bracing
@@thestonecircle Thanks, I will keep that in mind.

@@thestonecircle great , thanks for the response man that helps a lot
Not first....
SO CLOSE
What is your sandbag? I work in construction, and honestly get exhausted when i have to left all that concrete. I need to incorporate sandbag training bad
Hey I personally like the ironmind tough as nails sandbag most, but cerberus and rogue make great sandbags too
I have a #100 and #150. I am going to get an iron mind bag this time around. Should I fill it 200 immediately or should I do a smaller jump? Last night I shouldered the #150 25 times in 20 minutes
Hey that's super impressive, you are definitely ready for 200! Good luck!
@grassygrandma heck yeah, think about how much you'll have changed when you can get it for 20!!
For reference, I have one of those filled to 150, and the sand does shift a bit but not too bad, and I have 9ne filled up to 250 and the sand barely moves at all, so I'm thinking 200 should be great
@@thestonecircle thanks man!
1:19 Well I transitioned from 1 to 3 in the last month😂
Haha I feel that!
Hi,
What makes you say that iron mind sandbag is your favorite over others you own like the cerberus and rogue bags?
I think they're indestructible which is nice! I dropped mine from shoulder height onto rocks and sticks for years and it's good as new. Mostly though I like the shape. It's just a bit skinnier, which makes it a little easier to handle imo! They're all great though
@@thestonecircle thanks for the answer, got another question what filler material and method do you use? At the moment im lookin at Fringe's filler bags but im looking at other options too
@zombielord555 the ironmind bags come with 2 liners, I recommend using both, and I fill them with basic play sand from the hardware store
What comes to mind? Aspirational…. The “I want thaaaaaaaaat” moment.
Heyyy thanks for being here :)
I tried doing 200 lb carry, I used the vertical grip and I keep getting my knees, is there a way to fix that? Or should I just use the horizontal grip instead when pulling off the ground.
Hey I get that. If you can, bring the sandbag higher up on your chest with that vertical grip. If it's still a challenge weight, using a horizontal grip at waist level for a while while you build up strength can work great too
@@thestonecircle alright I'll try that. Thanks!!
What is the weight of this bag?
I have a few up from 150 to 300 lbs
I just started dabbling with sandbags. Maybe I can shoulder 200 with this technique.
Good luck!!
@@thestonecircleIt was probably sucky technique but I did it. I’m 6’1 205lbs though so it’s probably not very impressive.
How heavy is that red sandbag you use?
One is 220 and one is 275 :)
@@thestonecircle 🤯🤯🤯
@TadayoriOverAll haha 😁 the 275 is really tough though!
@@thestonecircle What weight sandbag did you start at? How long did it take for you to surpass 150lb?
I try to mention specific muscles sometimes but I could improve that
It’d be nice if you would define “heavy” “very heavy” etc.
It's all relative to the individual, but the gold standard life long goal for most seems to be a 300 lb sandbag to shoulder
👍💪
Thanks Matthew!
aha I just hug it and heave, but I guess mine isn't quite big enough to justify any fancy techniques yet.
Haha that works too if you have the strength!
From the thumbnail it looks like you have an imbalance in the shoulders. Or is it just the way you took the photo?
Might be a shame getting an imbalance after all that hard work
That would be a shame, just the way I'm standing though!
bro has veins on his back...
I got pretty shredded for a while haha
Is this good for your back?! I mean the tension and force of forcing it up from the grounds up, like at least part of your back be screaming and not in a good way. I know technique is everything but still this shit doesn't look to be very sustainable in the long run for your back right? But hey I'm not an expert at anything, just an observer.
@alexanderbrownbill3405 so far it's made my back feel great but I can't say for sure one way or the other. I usually look to basque stone lifters for motivation though, many of them have been lifting very heavy stones for high volume for years and they're okay
@@alexanderbrownbill3405 look for the intro videos that talk about bracing. Humans have been lifting heavy things for a very long time, we’re made for this stuff.
Love the content!
Thank you!
