    This week we take a look at the complex railways around the town of Cromer on the North Norfolk coast, many of which are now disused leaving an array of abandoned infrastructure for us to explore..
    If you are interested in finding out more about the railways of Cromer we'd highly recommend this book..

    Another enjoyable video. Really impressed by the Victorian brickwork on the viaduct and fascinated by the spiggott mortar in the tunnel. Cheers Ray

      Thanks James, our plan is to try and do as many of the old railway lines and station buildings as we possibly can around East Anglia and maybe further afield. Glad you enjoyed watching, thanks for your comment 👍😊

    We'll done guy's! Interesting video nice to see some hidden ww2 history inside the tunnel!
    if you ever venture to Shropshire, check out Bridgnorth my old home town, it has a tunnel that runs under the town, part of the Severn valley railway which was closed back in the 1960s. Apparently all the glasses used to shake in the pubs when the train went underneath.
    The tunnel is still accessible as I type this and not all the residents know about it!

    Thisis so cool! Was fairly near the area a couple of weeks ago (well, I was in Great Yarmouth more on the east coast) if I’d have known about this I probably would’ve driven over for a look myself!

    There's an old railway tunnel still present in Wells-next-the-Sea, but not many people know about it!

      @@ExploringWithEmAndStu I don't think so.
      If you head along Mill Road towards Holkham, towards the cottage hospital on your left, you'll see an entrance to a farm on the right with a brick wall either side of the road immediately afterwards.
      I used to play down there as a kid!
      Email me at ars.m0pto@gmail.com and I'll send you more details :)

      Bure Valley Railway has a tunnel going under the A140.

    You are spot on with the only tunnel in Norfolk comment - there are of course many embankments with brick arched roads and paths going under - but they are not what people mean by a tunnel - which is something bored through higher ground, or occasionally cut and covered. The line between Lowestoft and yarmouth has a nice one near pleasurewood hills theme park - but it's really a railway bridge as is the one near Oulton Borad swing bridge where the public footpath goes through a tunnel. I guess ny tunnel we mean something longer than just passing from one side of the track to the other!

    • @stephenpearson-jacklin8401
      @stephenpearson-jacklin8401 3 года назад

      Nope. Not Norfolk’s only tunnel at all. There was a tunnel on the Wymondham-Wells line at Barsham, which collapsed and was made into a cutting. Since the Bure Valley Railway was constructed in the 90s, there’s been a tunnel under the A140 at Aylsham.

    • @pauljohnson4590
      @pauljohnson4590 3 года назад +1

      @@stephenpearson-jacklin8401 road and rail crossings aren't really tunnels though, are they. Cromer is the only railway tunnel in Norfolk. Cut-throughs for road or footpaths through embankments dont get classified as tunnels.

    • @ExploringWithEmAndStu
      @ExploringWithEmAndStu  3 года назад +1

      I believe you are right Paul, we did state at the beginning of the video that this was the only remaining standard gauge tunnel left in Norfolk which even if u include the Bure Valley tunnel and the partly dismantled Barsham tunnel is technically still true i would say.. Saying that we are fairly new to learning about disused railways so always willing to learn more and expand our knowledge if we are incorrect about something 😊

    • @pauljohnson4590
      @pauljohnson4590 3 года назад

      @@ExploringWithEmAndStu It's stated in so many documents - including the google earth disused line overlays and the railway tunnels overlay. I understand why people think some are tunnels that still exist, because they are, but so short as to not count. In fact, they all have bridge numbers painted on or on a plate - which is a teeny give away. Re: cromer - I'm not sure how anyone thought a station at high level would ever be that much use! - but those viaducts are pretty impressive.

    • @stephenpearson-jacklin8401
      @stephenpearson-jacklin8401 3 года назад

      @@pauljohnson4590 the Aylsham bypass tunnel is classed as a tunnel due to the low height. When the height from the ground underneath is less than the length inside, it becomes a tunnel. Cromer is the only disused standard gauge tunnel in existence in Norfolk though but saying it’s the only tunnel is misleading (especially as it’s disused).

  • @lewis72

    Roughton Road station would be classed as a Cromer station if Link Halt was, wouldn't it ?

    • @ExploringWithEmAndStu
      @ExploringWithEmAndStu  3 года назад

      I guess yes technically now a days it probably is classed as a Cromer Station but wasn't one of the original Stations having been built in the 1985's.. Maybe i should have mentioned that but my brain was quite muddled with the whole complexity of it all by that point in the day... 🥴
